The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Ogun State Command, Area One says the death of a passerby at Agosasa, Ipokia Local Government Area of the state was due to the villagers’ connivance with smugglers to attack the officers with petrol bombs and other weapons during an operation.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Abdullahi Maiwada while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the incident said only two persons were injured during the face-off between smugglers and the customs men.

Mr Maiwada stated that smugglers have continued to defy various means to continue their economic sabotage noting that the command will not relent at enforcing the ban on smuggling.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Police Command, Alhaji Abimbola Oyeyemi while also confirming the incident on phone said he was awaiting the brief on the incident from the Divisional Police Officer in Ipokia.

The Ogun State enforcement task force on non-gathering for Prevention of covid-19 has dispersed some residents of Abeokuta for violation of the state government order against gatherings above twenty persons and above.

More than twenty-five Muslim faithful had converged on Najomo Mosques at car wash Area in Adatan to observe the jumat prayers against the warnings of the league of Imams and Alfas and the state Government to avoid such gathering.

The Imam of the Mosque who is also a lawyer, Alhaji Moshood Taiwo told the task force that they were only fifteen in the mosque when he commenced sermon.

The Wakheel of Muslims in Yorubaland, Edo and Delta State, Alhaji Iskeel Lawal who was with the enforcement team described the Imam’s action as clear violation of the law and the Islamic faith.

The commander of the task force, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Toyin Afolaogun, after dispersing the congregation said no stone would be left unturned to ensure the health of the public is secured.

Ogun State government has blamed the prevalence of tuberculosis in the society to poor access to healthcare services especially among the less privileged.

Wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun made this known in a statement in Abeokuta through her media aide, Kemi Oyeleye to commemorate the 2020 World Tuberculosis Day.

Mrs Abiodun who described tuberculosis as one of the major causes of death in Nigeria said there was the need for stakeholders to work together to ensure people have access to quality healthcare services in the state.

The wife of Ogun State governor explained that the celebration of the World Tuberculosis Day with the theme “It’s Time” was to the draw attention of relevant stakeholders on the need to reduce stigma and discrimination as well as to build accountability.  

She pointed out that Ogun State has 306 DOTS sites for TB services which increased from 216 DOTS sites in 2018 across the 20 Local Government Areas of the state while TB diagnosis remained free to patients. 

Mrs Abiodun said eighty-three per cent of a total of three thousand, one hundred and two cases managed in 2019 were successfully treated.

As of 09:45 am on 23rd March, (Source: @NCDCgov ) the number of Covid-19 cases in Nigeria is thirty-six with thirty-three active ones, a total of two people discharged with one person dead.

Lagos has twenty-five cases, the Federal Capital Territory, F.C.T, with six, Ogun State has two cases, Ekiti, Oyo and Edo states with one case each.

The first Covid-19 case in Nigeria was reported in Lagos on the twenty-ninth of last month.

Some of the preventive measures to prevent the disease are frequent washing of hands with soap using running water as well as the use of hand sanitizer.

Most of the banks and corporate offices visited in the Ibadan metropolis had sanitizers at their entrances for use by their customers.

Some residents who spoke with Radio Nigeria emphasised that they had been conscious of their level of personal hygiene.

However, there were no precautionary measures in markets as the traders were more concerned about their sales.

Some of them lamented the low level of patronage as most people were indoors.

They, however, called on the government to put mechanisms in place to control the spread of the Covid-19.

Ogun State Government has promised to provide a system that can be used to develop athletes that will compete for laurels for the state and Nigeria at large.

The State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun stated this while receiving the Torch of Unity of the 20th National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020 at the forecourt of the Governor’s office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. 

Governor Abiodun who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele explained that the national sports festival was an opportunity to bring the youth together, develop and discover new talents.

The governor admonished the state’s contingent to be of good conduct by following instructions of health and security personnel in order to achieve success at the festival. 

In a chat with newsmen at the event, Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Dr Oluwadare Kehinde expressed optimism that team Ogun would do the state proud at the festival.

The Director of Sports, Ogun State Sports Council, Mr Adesola Faleti who said the state would participate in thirty-two sports, added that all the state’s athletes have resumed camping ahead of the festival.

Forty contacts of the index case of coronavirus in Nigeria under quarantine have been reunited with their families after they tested negative to the virus.

Ogun state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker who made this known in Abeokuta while giving update on management of the index case said those reunited with their families include the second positive case that has now tested negative. 


The Commissioner thanked the people of Ogun state for their vigilance and urged them not to relent by continuing to observe their high level of personal and respiratory hygiene.

Dr. Coker thanked the Federal Government and collaborating agencies for their support and response to contain the outbreak of coronavirus in the country.

She assured that Ogun state government would continue to deploy technology to the remote areas for surveillance and risk evaluation and management to keep the people safe.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, on Thursday arrested 48 suspected internet fraudsters in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The suspects, many of whom claimed to be undergraduates, range between the ages of 18 and 28 years.

They were apprehended at locations around Alabata area of the ancient town, following actionable intelligence on their alleged involvement in internet-related crimes.

Among the suspects are: Anwinilomo Tomisin, Ayeni Ifedapo, Melojuekun Oluwatobi, Adeyemo Stephen, Gideon Achuka, David Mulero, Owolabi Abraham, Toheeb OlabanjiTe Teslim Kasali, Jide Abiodun Emmanuel, Alli Emmanuel Oluwaseun, Adeniyi Sultan, Ejiro Daniel, Chima Emmanuel, Adejare Oyebajo, Dike Chukwuebuka, Emeka Ikegbunam, Daniyi Tobiloba, Tomiwa Ibironke, Daniel Onnorom, Quadri Ayaniyi, Victor Solomon, Ayeni Oluwatosin, Adegbenro Emmanuel, Abdulrauf Adam, Daniel Praise, Biyi Adegbamigbe, Adeyinka Ibrahim, Sadiq Sanni, and Ibikunle Ajibola.

World Health Organisation, WHO, has taken the sensitization for the prevention of Coronavirus among Nigerians to religious leaders in Ogun State.

The sensitization workshop for the League of Imams and Dawah workers was held at the Egba Central Mosque, Kobiti, Abeokuta.

Radio Nigeria reports that the participants were drawn from Mosques and Muslim Organisations from the twenty local government areas of the state.

Ogun State Government has sealed up twelve companies in Ogijo area of the State for violations of environmental pollution law and other regulations.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr.Abiodun Abudu-Balogun, who led the environmental law compliance monitoring team on the operation said the companies mostly metal smelting were sealed up because their activities were not environmental friendly.

He said the companies would not be opened until they showed government their roadmap to ending pollution.

The Commissioner said no government would fold its arms and watch companies pollute the environment, considering its effects on the populace, reiterating this administration’s resolve to clamp down on erring companies, no matter their sizes and employment opportunities to the people.

Mr. Abudu-Balogun urged prospective and existing companies in the State to make environmental safety their watchword, as the government has zero-tolerance for pollution and other environment infractions.

A landlord in Ogijon area, Mr. Mubasiru Adetunji, commended the State government for the steps, which he noted should be extended to all parts of the State, as the action would save residents from various hazards of industrial pollutants.

Ogun State Government is to construct five hundred public toilets across the state to combat the challenges of open defecation.

Commissioner for Environment, Mr Abiodun Abudu-Balogun who made this known in Abeokuta while speaking on the ministry’s road map, hinted that the toilets would be constructed through a public-private partnership arrangement.

He said the ministry would be working to achieve its mandate despite the huge number of old buildings without toilets in the cities and the casual attitude of people towards open defecation.

Mr Balogun who explained that the task force on street trading, illegal construction and pollution would soon commence operation, also noted that erring traders who display their goods on the road medians will be sanctioned appropriately.

The Commissioner also added that the ministry in conjunction with the Ministry of Physical Planning will start the removal of illegal car showrooms across the cities in the state.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office on Friday, arrested 42 youngsters for alleged involvement in internet-related fraud.

The suspects, whose ages range between 18 and 33 years, were apprehended at different locations in Ilaro, Ogun State, following actionable intelligence earlier received on their alleged illegal activities.

The suspects are: Peter Fasuhan, Kareem Oladimeji, Adeleke Sodiq, Akinlolu Quadri, Popoola Lukeman, Faniyi Jamiu, Joseph Elijah, Idowu Afolabi, Laleye Olaoluwa, Olabode Olasunkanmi, Shoyola Joseph, Baura David, Janta Oluwafolabomi, Akintunde Wariz, Olukotun Abiodun, Kazeem Popoola, and Olaoye Akinyemi.

Others are: Adebanjo Olamide, Esiegbe Dare, Job Emmanuel, Idris Olarewaju, Bakare Sodiq, Popoola Waliu, Popoola Ibrahim, Balogun Tunde Daniel, Adegbite Richard, Owolabi Aderibigbe, Oniyide Benjamin, Sheye Oluwaseun, Enitan Babajide, Oguntayo Samud, Daramola Damilola, Adeniji Azeez, Shobola Adeolu, Odunbaku Tunde, Olamilekan Adedeji, Maja Toheeb, Giwa Olajide, Tolu Yusuf, Ashoregbabo Ayo and Adeosun Temitope.

Items recovered from them include eight exotic cars, mobile phones and laptops.

The EFCC said the indicted among them will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Ogun State Government says it is ready to host the 21st edition of the National Sports Festival, NSF.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr Oluwadare Kehinde stated this during an inspection visit by the Evaluation Bid Committee team of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, who were in the State to assess sporting facilities available for hosting of the festival.

Conducting the committee round sporting facilities in Abeokuta, Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, Dr Kehinde emphasized the state’s readiness to host the biennial sports competition in 2022, pointing out the present administration was passionate about sport development.

Speaking after the inspection, the chairman and leader of the committee, Mr Katmwan Dungse who described facilities available in Ogun State as a top-notch, said they had a better chance of hosting the festival in 2022.

Facilities inspected included MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta Sports Club, Alake Sports Center, Ijeja, June 12 Cultural Center, Kuto, Abeokuta Grammar School, Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu, NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Sagamu, and Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.

The winning bid to host the 21st National Sports Festival in 2022 would be announced at the closing ceremony of the 20th edition of the Festival, scheduled for Edo State in March 2020.

The Ogun State Government has launched a mobile application to enhance information dissemination among health workers.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, who made this known at the Emergency Operation Committee held on Sunday in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said the Android application was one of the measures to contain the Coronavirus incident.

Dr Coker said that the mobile device christened “CommCare” will serve as one resource for information about case definition and will help health workers at the primary health center to easily do risk assessment before it escalate.

The Commissioner pointed out that the application has been rolled out at Ewekoro Local Government area to enhance the activities of health workers.

Dr Coker revealed that the application would be deployed for use in two other priority areas, including, Ado-Odo/Ota and Ifo Local Government areas respectively, given the volume of industrial activities in their locality.

The Executive Secretary, Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, in a remark, commended the ministry of Health for coming up with the initiative of having a mobile application that will aid health workers at this crucial moment.

He assured that all primary health centers will use the mobile application to alert the State of any form of emergency.

Ogun state police command has arrested a 27 year old Ejike Okata for allegedly matcheting a 50 year old woman, Adeyiba Oladipupo to death.

The police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi told journalists in Abeokuta that the suspect was arrested today, March 1st, 2020 while trying to board an Ebonyi state bound bus.

Mr. Oyeyemi who explained that the incident occurred at Ayegbami area of Ijebu Ode said the suspect had ran away immediately after the incident before was caught.

The spokesman of the state command said the suspect who hailed from Onueke in Eza south local government area of Ebonyi claimed that the deceased accused him of stealing a phone which infuriated him.

Mr. Oyeyemi noted that the suspect confessed that he cut off the woman’s two hands because she attempted to struggle the matchet with him.

The police P.R.O said the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kenneth Ebrimson had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.

Ogun State Government has activated an Emergency Operation Committee to manage developments that may arise from the reported case of Coronavirus.

The Committee, which is headed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, comprises staffers of the State Ministry of Health, Hospital Management Board, Representatives of Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and representatives of Federal Medical Center (FMC), Abeokuta.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the meeting, Commissioner for health, Dr. Tomi Coker said that the multidisciplinary committee will meet daily and update the general public about any development.

The committee consists of seven sub-committee, including Risk Communication and Mobilisation, Surveillance, Case Management, Infection Prevention Control ( IPC),  Central Coordination/Planning and  Logistics/ Finance.

The Commissioner said that an Emergency Operation Center had been opened at Block C within the State Secretariat to attend to issues relating to the outbreak.

Reassuring residents on efforts made so far on containing the outbreak of Convid-19, Dr. Coker called on the public not to panic and ignore panic messages advising individuals to maintain personal hygiene and avoid contact with whoever has a fever by five feet.

World Radio Day is a day proclaimed by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO to celebrate radio broadcasters and encourage decision-makers to create and provide access to information to radio including community radios. 

Speaking on this year’s theme: “Radio and Diversity”, former Deputy Manager News of Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation, OGBC, Mr. Adegboyega Gbadebo has urged practitioners to make content their priority in order to deliver quality programmes to the people.

Mr. Adegboyega who described radio as an important medium to promote diversity, build a more peaceful and inclusive world, called on radio stations to uphold the ethics guiding radio broadcasting.

He also stressed the need for broadcasters to encourage local language to enable people at the grassroots to understand information and events easily.

Contributing, Dr Ayo Odetoyinbo from the Department of Mass Communication, Crescent University Abeokuta explained that the medium was not to advertise oneself but to inform and educate the public on happenings around them.

Dr Odetoyinbo, therefore, advised presenters to be content providers and reflect the diversity of audiences in their various programmes.

A minimum of two years imprisonment without an option of fine awaits illegal miners across the country in new legislation being proposed to improve the mining sector of the economy.

Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr. Oluwadare Kehinde has solicited the support of stakeholders especially sports journalists in reviving the sector in the state.

Dr. Kehinde made the call while receiving the executives of Ogun State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, led by its Chairman, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde in Abeokuta.

The Youth and Sports Commissioner who noted that the task of developing the sports sector required the contributions of individuals, groups and associations promised to run an open-door policy towards ensuring positive turnaround in the sector.

Earlier, the SWAN Chairman, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde had stressed the need for the government to resuscitate grassroots sports especially by organising a mini-festival that would engage youths in sporting activities and assist the state to discover new talents.

Alhaji Akintunde who described sports as an important sector to reduce youth restiveness said there was the need for the state athletes to commence early preparations for the National Sports Festival to ensure that state return to its leading place in the sector.

Former Executive Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Bishop Samuel Olukunle Ajani has passed on.

The entire FRCN family received the news of the death of a former Executive Director with shock and grief. Adedayo Adelowo had a chat with individuals who at a point in time had relationships with the deceased.

Reverend Canon Dr. Ajani as he was fondly called who was also the pioneer Bishop, Diocese of Egba West, Anglican Communion, would have clocked 80 years by 22nd April this year, except that death caught him unawares.

Bishop Ajani joined the service of FRCN on the 23rd, July 1963.

He rose through ranks to become the Executive Director in 1993.

The Abeokuta North Local Government, Ogun State-born engineer worked at various operations of FRCN including Lagos and Ibadan.

Reacting on the death, Zonal Director, FRCN Ibadan Zonal Station, Alhaji Mohammed Bello described the deceased as an expert in the field of Engineering.

Mrs. Grace Ojo, a secretary shared her memory of the late Ajani as a jovial boss who would always be fondly remembered.

On his part, Pa Oladosu Ojo who had served under the deceased said the late Ajani was very dutiful, noting that he lived for a good purpose.

Pa Ojo noted that beyond his dexterity in the line of duty, he was also dedicated to the work of God.

Retired Bishop of Ife-East/Anglican Communion found it difficult to believe that the loving Bishop Olukunle Samuel Ajani had passed on.

In a bid to find a lasting solution to security challenges facing the country, security experts have stressed the need to enhance community policing.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO in Ogun State, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi stated this while speaking with Radio Nigeria’s Paramount FM in Abeokuta. 

Mr. Oyeyemi said security agencies on ground cannot perform their duties alone, hence the need to introduce community policing which would go a long way in enhancing security in the state as well as the country at large.

He also urged the authorities of community policing to ensure the proper orientation of members that would be recruited into the scheme.

Also speaking, the Ogun State So Safe Corps Commander, Mr. Soji Ganzallo said measures had been put in place to make the state safer for residents, adding that there would be no hiding place for criminals.
