Fans of the late hip hop sensation, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as MohBad, took to the streets of Akure, the Ondo State capital, to express their solidarity with the grieving family of the departed singer.

Clad in black attire, the fans embarked on a procession along prominent routes, including Adesida and Arakale roads, culminating at the NEPA roundabout.

Their presence brought vehicular movement on one of the dual carriageways to a standstill for several hours, undeterred by an evening rain that nearly disrupted the march.

Throughout their journey, they chanted various songs in honour of MohBad’s memory, with placards which read, #JusticeforMohbad and #WhoOffLight among others.

The cause of 27-year-old Mohbab’s death is still unknown, and the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has also invited the State Security Service to investigate the death, which has sparked controversy.

A state delegation, led by the Lagos Deputy Governor, also visited Mohbad’s family’

Comrade Ogundipe Oláníyì, the organiser of the solidarity walk, explained that the fans in Akure felt compelled to join their voices with other prominent Nigerians in condemning the singer’s death.

He called on law enforcement agencies already involved in investigating MohBad’s death to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry, seeking justice for the deceased.

Furthermore, Comrade Olaniyi offered valuable advice to aspiring musicians, urging them to exercise caution when selecting partners to further their careers.

The security agencies closely monitored the event to prevent any potential disruption of public order.

Similarly, over hundreds of youths took to the streets of Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, in a peaceful protest to demand justice over the mysterious death of singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Mohbad, a signee of Marlian Records Company, died on September 12 in Lagos. He was 27.

Clad in black tee-shirts, the youth began the rally at Panseke area of the Ogun capital hoisting placards with inscriptions such as: “Justice for Mohbad’’, “Government must arrest `Naira Marley’ ‘’ and `Sam Larry’’ among others.

The cause of Mohbad’s death has been a subject of controversy since the tragic incident.

Some of the protesters told reporters that police must investigate the cause of the singer’s death and bring culprits to book.

One of them, Ayo Michael, said: “We are in pain! Mohbad must not die in vain. We want government to arrest anyone culpable.’’

Akure community is today celebrating the annual Aheregbe festival with the popular Erekesan, Cash-hold, and Adedeji markets shut.

Aheregbe, also known as Dududu is a traditional festival commemorated mainly by the Paramount Ruler, the Deji and his chiefs, during which prayers are offered for the peace and progress of the ancient town.

Shops and markets are shut during the celebration while young men popularly called “palace Servants” and other well-wishers will dance around the town

To mark this year’s Aheregbe festival, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo had ordered the closure of all markets in the ancient town but this was swiftly countered by the state government, insisting that such a directive did not get its approval, hence all markets must open for business.

This, no doubt, threw traders in markets across the capital city into a dilemma.

A visit to Erekesan, Cash- hold and Adedeji markets in Akure today showed total compliance with the Deji’s order as the three markets were totally deserted by both residents.

There was a partial opening at the NEPA neighbourhood market.

It was, however, a beehive of activities at Isinkan and Isolo markets as buying and selling were going on in full swing.

Some security personnel, especially the Amotekun Corps, were seen patrolling the city to prevent looting spree and any form of hooliganism as witnessed during the past Aheregbe festival.

Meanwhile, some traders have called for a synergy between the Deji’s palace and the Ondo State Government on the issue of market closure for the annual festival.

The traders including Mr David Bonte and Miss Funke Akintola suggested that both parties should always reach a compromise before the date and procedure are announced for the Aheregbe festival to avoid any confusion.

No fewer than 20 persons were burnt to death in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

It was gathered that the victims were scooping fuel from a petrol tanker that fell and spilled its content along the Benin–Ore-Sagamu Expressway on Sunday.

According to an eyewitness, the fire was ignited by a spark from a phone held by one of the persons who were scooping fuel.

The eyewitness stated that the victims of the disaster included three children and a pregnant woman who brought a sum of N100,000 to the scene to buy fuel.

The eyewitness said, “We were inside the church when the tanker fell and spilled its contents on the road. Shortly after it fell down and spilled the fuel on the road, some persons rushed to the place to scoop fuel.

“At that time, the rain was falling. Despite that, people still rushed there and started scooping fuel when the fire started after a spark from a phone.

“At the scene, we have counted about three children and over 15 bodies we can’t identify, and also a pregnant woman that wanted to buy the fuel also died in the incident. They were burnt beyond recognition.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and described the victims as fuel scoopers.

“They were scooping fuel from a tanker when the fire started. We have commenced an investigation into the matter,” the PPRO stated.

Family & Relationship

Ondo state deputy governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa, has denied ever raising his hands against his wife Oluwaseun.

A civil society group, Society for Women Empowerment (SWE), has accused the Ondo state deputy governor of assaulting his wife, Oluwaseun twice in the last four months.

It’s National Coordinator of the group, Mrs Damilola Charles, in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure, accused the deputy governor of repeatedly beating his wife in the presence of his staff and friends.

Charles said “wife beating is a civil rights problem of enormous magnitude, the campaign on violence against women must be applicable to elected officers in the country.

But the deputy governor, denied ever raising his hands against his wife since they got married.

Ayedatiwa in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Kenneth Odusola-Stevenson, described the group as faceless and the allegation baseless.

He said that the report was capable of creating needless tension in our State.

The statement reads that ” the allegation of domestic abuse against the person of the deputy governor is a figment of the imagination of those behind it and their ungodly intentions to cause crisis in the State had been known for weeks and therefore such falsehood did not come as a surprise.

“While His Excellency reserves the right to privacy on issues pertaining to his family, it is pertinent to state clearly that there has never been any domestic violence between the Deputy Governor and his lovely wife, Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, who at the moment is outside the shores of the country.

” It is not a secret that Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa has lived and worked in the United Kingdom for many years before her husband became an elected public official in Nigeria and since then she has been shuttling between United Kingdom and Nigeria to take care of the home and the children who are also in the United Kingdom.

“Therefore, any report of alleged domestic issues within the family should be taken as the handiwork of the enemies of the State who are bent of causing crisis where there is none and we therefore warn those spreading such falsehood to desist or face the consequences.

” It is concerning to see that a faceless group said to be headed by a name not known anywhere in the State could sell such fabrication to media men.

“It is more concerning, however, that such lie, which was not backed with any evidence whatsoever, could be promoted into a news item by journalists.

“In the last four months quoted in the false report as timeline, His Excellency has been busy with official duties of his office and has during the period performed the duties of the office of the Governor as delegated to him by his boss, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, while he was on Leave.

Ondo state government weekend asked Nigerians to ignore the rumour of the demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Speculations were rife that the governor who had been indisposed for a while, passed on this morning.

But the state information and Orientation Commissioner, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, in a statement in Akure, made the clarification.

The statement reads “We have been inundated with calls and messages concerning the state of health of the Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON.

“We had chosen to ignore this wicked fabrication until it appeared that certain persons seek to draw political mileage from the disinformation.

“Though the Governor has been indisposed, he has been attending to state matters and delegating functions to functionaries of the Government, when necessary.

“We enjoin the members of the public to ignore the rumour. Aketi is very much alive.

However, both the Social Democratic Party and the People’s Democratic Party, have raised concerns over the governor’s health.

While the SDP, state chairman, Stephen Adewale kicked against the secrecy of the health conditions of the governor, the spokesperson for the People’s Democratic Party, Kennedy Peretei, said the governor’s whereabouts should not be a secret.

Adewale said that ” There are now serious doubts about Governor Akeredolu’s capacity to continue to govern the Sunshine State as his medical conditions remain shrouded in secrecy.

“It is quite disturbing that the state of the governor’s health has become a topic of state curiosity and concern.

” This situation continues to undermine the ability of the State government to fulfil its obligations and commitments, including those requiring the government to provide economic pathways to millions of people facing absolute poverty and uncertainty in the Sunshine State due to the reckless and insensitive removal of subsidy by the APC-led federal government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned the Speaker, Ondo State House Of Assembly, Bamidele Oloyeloogun before the state High Court in Akure, over alleged fraud.

The arraignment on Tuesday marked the beginning of the official trial of the head of the state’s legislature.

Also arraigned before the court, was the lawmaker representing Akoko South-West Constituency 2, Felemu Bankole and a civil servant Segun Oyadeyi Bankole

The Speaker alongside others was docked on a two-count charge involving fraud.

They however pleaded not guilty to the allegations levelled against them.

During the trial,  the counsel to the EFCC, Kingsley Kudus asked the court to remand the defendants at the Olokuta Correctional Facility, though they had pleaded not guilty, the defendants were still in the hands of the court while the trial continues.

Reacting, counsel to the defendants, Femi Emodamore who told the court that he was fully prepared for the commencement and continuation of the trial, asked the court to strike out EFCC’s prayer for remand, saying the administrative bail application on the defendants was still active.

He explained that the second defendant (Oleyelogun) was having a health challenge that needed urgent medical attention.

Emodamore also asked the court to caution the nominal complainant and lawmaker ( Iroju Ogundeji) in the case for allegedly sending messages to the Speaker in an attempt to annoy him.

According to him, if Ogundeji did not desist from such action, he would be prosecuted as his actions towards the Speaker is against the law.

In his ruling, Justice Adegboyega Adebusoye asked the defendants to be enjoying their administrative bail till the next hearing as he adjourned the case till May 18 for a proper hearing of the trial.

Education

Sexual violence remains a scourge which must not be allowed to fester like gangrene in society, especially as youths are now getting caught in the web of the malaise in the country.

Radio Nigeria correspondent, Olufisoye Adenitan, in this special report, reveals how girls have become more vulnerable to rape cases in secondary schools in Ondo State.

A major factor fueling this trauma for girls is bad toilet facilities or their location in schools in Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria.

Some victims recount their experiences.

“It was a beautiful morning, I was on my way to drop my brother at school and also proceed to my school along the Store Area, after Prayer Centre Church along Idanre Road, Akure, Ondo State, three men blindfolded me and raped me,” 18-year-old Hannah* recounted.

“After the incident, I decided to drop out of school,” she stated further, adding that the perpetrators started threatening her parents who were trying to seek justice.

The southwest security network codenamed: AMOTEKUN, got the perpetrators arrested while a human rights lawyer, Tayo Dada decided to take up the case from there. The rapists are now in the Nigerian Correctional Centre awaiting trial.

There is also a case of a 14-year-old SS1 Student of Akure High School, who was gang raped by three male students of the school during school hours.

Akure High School located in Akure, the state capital of Ondo State was founded in 1974. It has over one thousand students but without a single toilet facility. This forces students to relieve themselves in the bush.

According to the victim “I was feeling pressed to use the toilet but because there was no toilet in  the school, I went to a nearby bush, unknowingly the boys were laying ambush for me and dragged me back into the bush and raped me.”

“One of the boys had approached me a few months back for relationship and sex and I declined until he recruited his friends to rape me. The boys were my seniors and I knew them by name,” she narrated.

The victim revealed that after the incident she went straight to class in excruciating pain until her mates discovered a blood stain on her school uniform and raised alarm.

An investigation reveals that the school administrators immediately called the police for the arrest of the boys who are currently at the juvenile centre in Akure.

The vile act generated heat from parents, stakeholders and community leaders on the increasing sexual abuse of school girls.

Some of the parents, Mrs Ronke Agunloye, Mrs Mojisade Adegbuyi and Kikelomo Paseda expressed fear that if something urgent was not done, it could affect the enrollment of girls in schools for the 2022/2023 academic session, considering the vulnerability and poor state of facilities especially toilets in the schools.

Rape, no doubt, constitutes part of violence against women and girls, often perpetrated in the guise of harmful traditional practices.

This practice ranges from female genital mutilation, child early marriage and forced marriage, female infanticide, breast ironing, rape, period stigma, and virginity testing among other social norms.

Girls are more vulnerable to harmful practices because violence or ritual discrimination is normalized by social norms.

In Ondo, female students live in the fear of the unknown: one in four girls never feels comfortable using a school latrine.

Each year, 150 million girls are raped worldwide by a close person or someone in the family circle, and 30 per cent of females globally have reported that their first sexual experience was forced.

According to the Linking Partners for Niger Delta Development on sexual violence against children in Ondo State, in 2022, there were more than 30 incidents of child sexual abuse and exploitation reported between 2018 and 2021.

Recent data shows an increase in reported incidents of child sexual abuse in Ondo State.

Ironically, the trauma women equally come from an unexpected quarter. According to UNICEF, one in ten women who have experienced violence trying to seek help from security operatives.

Justice

After Hannah’s rape experience, AMOTEKUN, a security network in the Southwest arrested three perpetrators but the families and some community leaders came begging the father of the victim to settle out of court.

“They came to my house in a Sienna bus begging me to withdraw the case from AMOTEKUN after I resisted they started threatening my family, especially the victim’s mother,” he recounts.

Socio-economic and evidence-based facts truncate justice in cases of rape, but Hanna’s father believed that he would get justice for his daughter as the case will resume hearing, on January 27th 2023 as the perpetrators are still in custody.

According to a human right lawyer, Mrs Chamba Sagba notes that justice system in Ondo State has improved with the passage of the VAPP Act.

She cited a rape case in Akure that started on December 8th 2021 and closed in December 2022.

“Although there are particular cases when GBV happens between families, there are cases of abandonment and relocation because they prefer to settle out of court without exposing their families and community pervading justice system.”

According to her, Section 218 of the Nigerian Criminal Code says that a person cannot be found guilty of rape or defilement without evidence.

But then, the patriarchal nature of society has compelled women to be silent.

CSOs Improved Advocacy Against Rape

Mrs Folasade Bamigboye, the executive director of Kids &Teen Resources Centre, a local NGO in Ondo State, has embarked on various advocacy campaigns in collaboration with local government, farmsteads, and rural communities on the dangers of sexual violence

“Gender-based violence should not be treated as a family matter; it is a criminal offence and violation of human rights.”

Similarly, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ondo State chairperson Jumoke Ogunjebi said women and girls experience a lot of changes in their bodies that necessitated a lot of hormonal imbalances which could lead them to use the toilet facilities in schools and homes more than their male counterparts.

“Girls require a good toilet for their overall well-being and psycho-social balance,” she said.

Unfortunately, this is not the case in our Secondary school in Ondo State, government should do something urgently.

Government Intervention

The government recently passed into law the VAPP law of Ondo State.

The state is one of the 34 states in Nigeria that have domesticated the law to protect the rights of women.

To achieve the desired result of eliminating violence and making both illiterates and literate understand the law, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs with support from UNFPA simplified the law into local languages.

However, regarding the necessary toilet facilities in schools, investigation reveals that there were no toilet facilities provided for over one thousand students schooling at Akure High School.

In a telephone interaction with the Ondo State Director of School Services, Dr Akindele Ige, they are working on the issue.

“We are working out modalities to fix a toilet in the school ASAP,” he said.

A professor of philosophy of Education, Mathew Ayeni advocated for trained education administrators and professionals that understand the pedagogy of teaching and principles guiding the profession to help in addressing the situation.

“In the 21st century, basic infrastructure and learning tools are parts of the fundamental rights of children in schools,” he said calling on educationists to push for the right learning environment which promotes the safety of learners.

During the 16 Days Activism against sexual and gender-based violence in Ondo State, the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Dr Bunmi Osadahun empathised that one of the key solutions was the regular engagement of traditional rulers with their subjects on SGBV.

“The VAPP Act will not spare any offender,” she stated.

One of the traditional Ruler in Akure, Iralepo of Isinkan in Ondo state, Oba oluwagbemiga Ajimokunola olofin-Adimula at a consultative forum on sexual and gender-based violence maintained that traditional institutions would not tolerate any forms of violence against girls and women in their domain.

“Rapists will not be tolerated in my domain; I will expose them, “Iralepo of Isinkan.

Dr Yomi Oshatimi, a local psychiatrist identified stigma and post-trauma stress disorder as major issues the victims of sexual abuse had to battle with as well as an anxiety disorder.

He added that shelters give immediate relief and boost the confidence and sense of security of victims.

As more girls continue to be sexually abused, the government has been charged to be more responsible in providing necessities in schools that would reduce the vulnerability of girls.

Gender advocates should also intensify efforts at ensuring the enlightenment of stakeholders in charge of the affairs of the girls as well as an improved justice system and penalty for those who want to subvert justice in the name of “family matter.”

At this time the implementation of the VAPP Act was critical to the stipulated punishment for offenders.

This story was supported by African women in media, as part of the Reporting Violence against women and Girls initiative.

Crime

The Ondo State Police Command said it had arrested a woman identified as Funmi Mogbojuri for allegedly stealing a day-old baby.

The police said the 35-year-old suspect stole the baby at the Sabo Area of Okitipupa, the headquarters of the Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state and took the baby to Sagamu in Ogun State.

Speaking on the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, said the suspect was arrested while the latter was about to christen the stolen baby

She said, “One Abass Issah of Arikawe Street, Okitipupa, came to the station and reported that his new-born baby was stolen by unknown persons. Discreet investigation by the Okitipupa Divisional Policemen led to the arrest of Funmi Mogbojuri, who absconded with the baby to Makun, Sagamu in Ogun State.

“During interrogation, she confessed to have absconded with the baby to her husband’s house. It was also discovered that she had earlier stolen another baby on the 16th of January, 2021, in Okitipupa, took the child to Igbokoda and gave him to one Lucky and said the child died few days later.”

Speaking, the suspect confessed to the commission of the offence and pleaded for forgiveness. She said she could not ascertain the spirit that entered her to have committed such an act.

Mogbojuri also said she had two kids for her first husband before but his family prevented her from having access to them.

She said, “It was not intentional, I will just beg Nigerians to forgive me. Truly, I stole the child and I did that in order to be taking good care of the child. I have given birth before, but I never had child for the husband I’m presently with. I just like the child, that’s why I abducted the child because I have not conceived for my present husband.

“The husband I married now did not know anything about the situation, I lied to him that I was pregnant. This would be the second time I will abduct a child so I’m just pleading for forgiveness.”

The mother of the baby, Binta Alhassan, who also spoke on the incident, stated that Mogbojuri came to their house because she was very familiar with their house and requested to pass the night in her house on the day she put to bed, which she obliged.

She said, “She had a friend in our house before who she always visited but the man is no more living in our house. That is how we knew her. She came in the evening of the day I put to bed that she was stranded in Okitipupa and had no place to sleep.

“We allowed her to spend the night in one of the vacant rooms, we even gave her food to eat that night, not knowing that she had a mission. To my surprise, the following morning, while on my way from the bathroom, the woman had disappeared with the baby which I had not even been breastfed by then, it was after five days that the police found and arrested her.”

The Police Public Relations Officer said the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded on the matter.

Some of the suspects were identified as Ojo Rotimi, Tosin Omoniyi, Jimoh Dele, Uwanfor Destiny, Babajide Moses, Tope Gbenga, John Simeon, Akinniranye Blessing, Jude Stephen, and Iranlowo Ayomide.

Omoniyi was allegedly arrested while attempting to rape a woman after robbing her family of valuables in their house at Idanre community in the Idanre Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police, the suspect entered into the apartment through the window around 1am and dispossessed a couple of their money and other valuables.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, who paraded the suspect, said he would soon be charged to court.

The PPRO said, “It was in the process of trying to rape the wife of the man that he (husband) summoned courage and descended on the accused, apprehended the robber with the help of neighbours, and dispossessed him of his gun.”

Odunlami also stated that the suspect’s 55-year-old mother, Mrs Tale Akinlabi, was arrested for allegedly helping him to keep stolen items.

He said, “I entered through the window and met the couple in the house; I ordered them to bring out all the money and valuables in their house. They were able to bring out just N50,000, but I asked the woman to go and bring more valuables from her room because I was not satisfied with the cash.

“I followed the wife into her room to search the room and I asked her to lie on the bed and she obeyed because I was holding a gun. The woman shouted that I was about to rape her and her husband rushed in with four other men.

“I was overpowered before I could go for my gun because I had dropped the gun on the ground while I was trying to sleep with the woman. They beat me up, seized the gun and handed me over to the police.”

His mother, Akinlabi, however, denied aiding him, saying she knew nothing about his criminal activities.

She said, “I know him as an Okada rider, but I was surprised to hear he was into armed robbery. He came to me that he wanted to buy a motorcycle and wanted me to follow him there, which I did and he had been using the Okada since then.

“I asked him the source of the money he used to buy the motorcycle, but he told me it was from his monthly contributions and I did not have any cause to doubt him since he was working as a commercial motorcycle rider.

“I was surprised when I learnt at the hospital about his arrest for armed robbery and attempt to rape. I was in the hospital because my husband had been sick for some time and I was with him.

“I was surprised when the police said I had been aiding him in his robbery operations. I had six children for his father, but he is the only surviving child of the marriage before I decided to leave his father.”
