An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has sentenced a paedophile teacher, Omotayo Adanlawo to life imprisonment for raping the 10year old daughter of his church’s founder at Iju in Akure North Local Government Area.

The presiding judge, Justice Samuel Bola said Adanlawo failed to give convincing evidence and testimony to prove his innocence.

It was gathered that the judge described the victim as a ‘Witness of Truth’ because of the courage and precision in her testimony.

Omotayo Adanlawo on 24th August, 2018 allegedly went to the victim’s house at Iju while she was alone and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her, warning her not to tell anyone else she would die.

When the victim started complaining of stomach pains and could not walk afterwards, her mother took her to a hospital for examination where it was revealed that the girl had been raped

And after rigorous interrogation, the little girl opened up and said her father’s church member Omotayo Adanlawo had sexual intercourse with her.

The case was then reported at Iju-Itaogbolu Divisional Police Headquarters before being transferred to Ala Area Command, and a medical report revealed that there was actual penetration into the 10 year old girls’ private part.

Based on the legal advice from the director of public prosecution, Adanlawo was dragged before Justice Samuel Bola of a count charge of rape contrary to section 357 and punishable under Section 358 of the criminal laws of Ondo State.

While the prosecution led by a state counsel, Stella Adegoke called 5 witnesses including the victim and her mother, the defendant was the only one who stood for himself.

Adanlawo in his statement before the police claimed the young girl told him to lie on her after asking for 50 naira and chinchin, but during cross examination, said he was at home at the time of the incident.

He also claimed to be battling with hernia and as such was not medically fit to have had sexual intercourse with the girl.

Justice Samuel Bola in his judgment however said the prosecution was able to prove there was penetration in the rape allegation against Adanlawo

He also said the defendant gave no medical report to prove his condition as well as any evidence to suggest his was in his house as claimed on the day of the incident.

He therefore sentenced Adanlawo to life imprisonment in line with Section 358 of the criminal laws of Ondo State.

The Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Adekola Olawoye said the judgment has shown that it would not be business as usual for paedophiles in the state.

Omotayo has been handed over to officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (formerly Nigerian Prisons) to begin his sentence.

Two days earlier, the war against rape had received a major boost as a Keke NAPEP driver, Blessing Kingsley, also bagged a life imprisonment for raping a teenager in Ondo town.

Kingsley is to spend the rest of his life in prison for raping a 14-year-old girl and infecting her with Hepatitis B two years ago.

Justice Bode Adegbehingbe of an Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, who gave the judgment after a two-year trial, said the weight of evidence proved without doubt that Kingsley was guilty of the one-count charge of rape.

News

Rape is assuming a worrisome dimension with increased reporting in recent times in Nigeria and all other parts of the world.

Apart from an undergraduate in Edo State, Vera Omozuwa, and a resident in Oyo State, Barakat Bello, who were murdered by their assailants, more cases have come to limelight.

For instance, a twelve-year-old girl was recently raped by four masked men in her home in Ajah, Lagos and another twenty-seven-year-old man was also apprehended for allegedly defiling a three-month-old baby and four other children in Adogi village, Nassarawa State.

In May this year, a forty-three-year-old man was arrested for defiling his fifteen-year-old daughter at Lugbe area, Abuja and another suspect was arrested for luring and forcefully having carnal knowledge of a six-year-old boy.

The list is endless.

Rape, put in the words of gender activists all over the world, is like stabbing the heart and leaving the knife there.

Rape leaves an indelible scar long after tissue healing has occurred as it results in physical, psychological and social damage for the survivor.

Survivors often feel they are marked for life, disenchanted and most times feel burdened by normal every day activity

Some develop suicidal tendencies due to anxiety, some depression while others contract sexually transmitted diseases and sometimes damage reproductive organs as a result of the act.

There have been unreported instances where women have attempted to murder children born from rape.

Furthermore, in the northeastern part of the country, women and girls rescued from Boko Haram have shown intense hatred for children resulting from their forceful unions with the terrorists.

To reduce incidences of rape, therefore, the nation’s justice system should be strengthened

A 2017 statistics from the United States of America revealed that of every one hundred cases of rape, forty-six will not be reported to the police, twelve will not lead to arrest, nine will get prosecuted and five will be temporarily arrested, only three will spend time in prison while the other ninety-seven will walk free with no punishment for them.

The scenario in Nigeria could rather be imagined.

Therefore, the child rights act which provides that sex with a child is rape and anyone who has sexual intercourse with a child is liable to imprisonment for life upon conviction should be strictly enforced to serve as a deterrent to others.

Commendably, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum has strongly condemned all forms of violence against women and children and pledges commitment to ensure that offenders face the maximum weight of the law.

Furthermore, the ministry of women and social welfare should up its game by liaising with relevant authorities to find lasting solutions to rape issues.

The boy child from a tender age must be taught respect and dignity for women while musical videos and films depicting women as mere sex symbols should be reviewed.

It is essential to recognise the need to provide emotional therapies for survivors in the nation’s hospitals.

Rape is never the fault of survivors, they live with the shame and guilt and often find it difficult to forgive themselves.

Knowing this, therefore, family support and favourable environment is needful to promote the healing process which is often slow, while linkage with a support group is essential to encourage experience sharing and eventual recovery..

News Analysis

Sexual maladaptive behaviour is defined as an abnormal pattern of acting out in sexual manners that are grossly out of proportion to normal development.

When sex, especially rape, is introduced to children at a very young age, it begins to cause certain behaviours in these children this is now known as sexual maladaptive behaviour.

It is a type of behaviour that puts the child’s physical, mental and emotional well-being at risk and also the safety of those who surround the child.

Although, some sexual behaviours in a child could be harmless as it could be a form of self-exploration, but this behaviour becomes maladaptive when it causes social impairment, disruption in daily activities, physical and emotional discomfort to the child and also to others.

There are various and several causes of sexual maladaptive behaviour but one which is very common is sexual molestation and child rape.

Many children who display these acts have been or are still victims of sexual abuse, molestation and rape.

They have been molested sexually by older people and people who in one way or the other, have a close relationship with.

Also, children are exposed to these behaviours through social media movies, internet and their environment.

Environmental factor plays a very important role in the development of a child.

Some of the symptoms that are commonly neglected includes when a child blatantly ignores rules, disregards figures of authority, display aggressive behaviours, touching the genitals of animals, exposing oneself in public settings and making crude movements with their bodies.

It is very advisable for parents, guardians and teachers to pay immediate attention and treatment to children with such behaviours as to avoid making it become a long term addiction.

Sexual maladaptive behaviours does not just affect the child physically but also psychologically.

Such children are very liable to have anxiety disorders, communication and learning issues and anti-social disorders.

Parents should henceforth learn to monitor their children and keen attention should be given to the kind of movies they watch, the things they say and the clothes they wear.

Also schools, who have such children in their custody should not relegate such children but should create a forum that will help, such as extra lessons and paying undivided attention to them and also educate them about sexual maladaptive behaviours.

The media should also organise programmes that educate parents and children on the behaviours exhibited.

As we all know that rape affects victims negatively both physically and emotionally, rapists should not be spared but brought to book.

Also parents or guardians of a victim should as a matter of importance, apart from seeking medical attention for the victims, take the victims to psychologists to cleanse any psychological distress.
