Mr. Dare made the appeal while delivering a keynote address at the Media Transformative Group Summit held at the American Corner, Jericho, Ibadan.

He stated that the President’s reforms had begun to yield the desired results through the restoration of accountability, discipline, and the retooling of the nation’s anti-corruption architecture.

Speaking on the theme “NIGERIA @65, Rule of Law, Systemic Problem: The Way Forward,” Mr. Dare reaffirmed that President Tinubu remains committed to judicial independence and access to justice.

The Sabiganna of Iganna, Oba Saliu Oyemonla, emphasized the need for positive attitudinal change, noting that government efforts can only succeed with citizens’ support.

During a panel discussion, the Chief Press Secretary to Oyo State Governor, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, alongside human rights activists Dr. Oluwakemi Aremu and Mr. Jide Olowoyo, stressed that laws should not be applied selectively but enforced firmly on anyone who contravenes them.

A journalist, Mr. Olufemi Olukunle, noted that members of the pen profession should be adequately remunerated to motivate them to effectively serve as watchdogs of society.

In his address, the Convener of the Media Transformative Group and General Manager of Pensioners FM, Ibadan, Dr. Babatunde Tiamiyu, said the group was established to promote healthy competition and professionalism among broadcast organizations in Ibadan.

President Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the immediate withdrawal of Nigeria from all international basketball competitions for a period of two years with immediate effect.

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.

Dare, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ismaila Abubakar, said a committee would be set up to oversee basketball leagues in the country.

“Following the unending crisis which has plagued and nearly crippled the development of basketball in Nigeria, President Buhari has approved the withdrawal of Nigeria from all international basketball competitions for a period of two years.

“This is with immediate effect,” he said.

The minister added that the withdrawal of Nigeria is in order to concentrate efforts by the government towards revamping the sport from the grassroots as well as domestic leagues which have become moribund.

“This will also allow for the setting up of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the management and development of the domestic basketball leagues in Nigeria,” he said.

He then called on stakeholders to help sustain and stabilise the game.“In issuing the order, the Federal Government reiterates its interest and commitment to the development of the sport of basketball in Nigeria as well as huge talents of our youth domestically in an atmosphere free of rancour and squabbles.

“Government, therefore, calls on players, officials, fans, and other stakeholders of the sport to remain calm as it embarks on far-reaching initiatives to reposition, sustain and stabilise the game of basketball.

“This will aid in the growth and success of the sport in the long-term interest of the country,” the minister said.

The basketball federation has been engulfed in leadership crisis in the last five years.

Two parallel national federation board elections were held in 2017 (in Kano and Abuja) and 2022 (in Benin and Abuja), leading to the emergence of separate governing bodies.

The Nigerian Senate has summoned the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare over the vandalisation of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja by fans following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The upper chamber also invited Amaju Pinnick, president of the Nigeria Football Federation, and other agencies involved in the maintenance and security of the revamped stadium.

The lawmakers passed the resolution during the plenary session on Wednesday following a point of order raised by Michael Nnachi, a senator from Ebonyi.

Radio Nigeria had reported that after the final whistle of the World Cup playoff between Nigeria and Ghana, some fans stormed the pitch and damaged the facilities in the stadium.

The minister and NFF president are expected to brief the lawmakers on the violent fallout and why Super Eagles lost the mundial ticket to the Black Stars.

Violent reaction by irate fans reportedly took place in the aftermath of Nigeria vs Ghana qualifier leading to vandalisation of facilities at the stadium and the unfortunate death of Zambian CAF official, Joseph Kabungo,” Senator Nnachi said.

The national stadium was jam-packed with highly expectant Nigerian fans throughout the controversial match, and the alleged violent reaction of those fans to the outcome of this match has become a subject of local and international media criticism.

“A lot of valuable facilities at the stadium were destroyed, but the extent of the destruction is yet to be determined by the relevant government authority.

There is no gainsaying that the destruction will cause the government of Nigeria several millions of naira to either replace or effect repairs.

Apart from several unidentified football fans who were injured as a result of this incident, the death of Dr Joseph is a huge loss to the global football community.”

Supporting the motion, Abba Moro, a lawmaker from Benue State, said the senate must ensure that stadia across the country are well structured and possibly fitted with modern CCTV and other tracking devices, to deter such an incident from happening in the future.

“It is sad that Nigerians vented their anger and frustration on the physical stadium,” the former Minister of Internal Affairs, retorted.

The senate also mandated its committee on sports and youth development to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the failure of the Eagles to qualify for the World Cup in spite of overwhelming government support.

Not wanting to add to the public distraction, I have deliberately waited until the end of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games before making any observations regarding the various reports on Nigeria’s participation in the quadrennial games.

This was out of respect for our athletes who had committed so much effort and made such considerable personal sacrifice in order to represent our nation as best as they could.  Overall, we should be proud of Team Nigeria and the effort they made. The bottom line is that these games should always be about the athletes and the spirit of friendly competition and excellence the Olympics are meant to engender.

Sadly, some people seem not to have embraced either the good cause of our national athletic pursuits or the collegial and noble spirit that the Olympics promote.

The rancour and confusion some people seem intent on sowing are terribly out of place given the impressive performance of our team and good spirit with which they performed. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are now over, which means we can begin to honestly and objectively assess what was accomplished as well as what we must do to improve performance for future contests.

Nigeria succeeded with two (2) medals – a silver in wrestling won by Blessing Oborodudu and a bronze in long jump won by Ese Brume. Their performances were inspiring for they affirmed we can and should compete at the highest levels across the full range of sports events. Yes, we had wished and worked for more medals. But we must also put things in perspective. The medal outcome at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics stands as Nigeria’s best result in the last 13 years.

Moreover, the athletes of Team Nigeria did their nation proud. Many of them reached the finals of their respective sports and, competing with all they had, were in contention for medals until the final moment. Any one who saw their efforts would have nothing but the utmost respect for them, their coaches and all the technical staff that made Tokyo possible.

I thank President Muhammadu Buhari for his unrelenting support for Sports and Youth development and indeed for the opportunity to serve and lead our participation at these games. Team Nigeria placed 74th position on the final Olympic medal table among 205 participating countries, despite our small contingent to the games. We were 8th among 52 African countries that participated. Team Nigeria excelled in many areas that engender hope for greater success in the future.

Nigeria had five Olympic finalists in 100 meters Hurdles Women, Short Put, Long jump, Wrestling and 100 meters men. Team Nigeria broke the 13 year old jinx of no medal in Long jump and 25 years of no finalist in the men’s 100 meters, and secured a medal in wrestling for the very first time. Overall, our performance was good and more importantly it is headed in the right direction.

While the general trends and overall performance was positive, I must mention two unfortunate incidents that occurred.

First is the mishap resulting in 10 Team Nigeria athletes being ruled ineligible to compete for missing their mandatory Out of Competition Test, OTC. When notice of this ruling got to me, I immediately mobilized my team and the AFN leadership to see how the situation could be salvaged. We mounted a vigorous appeal process with Athletics Integrity Unit, AIU and had the team members complete the tests.  However, timing became the critical issue . Despite our energetic appeal, the deciding committee made its announcement which gave no latitude to our team members for what was only an inadvertent lapse.

The adverse decision was painful to accept. We had prepared carefully and eagerly for the Olympics with the expectation that each person, federation, coach and athlete would also complete the necessary preparations required of them. As Minister, I ensured that all necessary approvals were done so that all requisite tests and exams could be timely completed. For me this unfortunate incident is most painful because these athletes had prepared long and hard and also in view of the challenging circumstances due to COVID-19.

As the Minister I must bear some institutional responsibility for this lapse.  I also had to depend and expect that each person in the long and often technical chain will perform their role expeditiously and with precision. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line someone failed in their responsibility and as Minister I bear the responsibility and brunt of criticism.

But that is not enough. I must move to ensure that Nigeria never experiences another such moment. I have ordered a full investigation that will not only uncover what happened, but will also, recommend a process where such lapses can never occur in the future and initiate leveraging compliance monitoring technology to guardrail this.

I have personally apologized to the affected athletes. Here and now, I personally apologize to all Nigerians for this ineligibility episode. The AFN has also taken responsibility and apologized to the athletes and to Nigerians.

Already, a new Medical and Anti-Doping Commission has been set up to establish a fool proof system of testing and ensure Nigeria exits the A Categorization by WADA.

Also, Blessing Okagbare remains one of our best athletes who has served Nigeria well. We emphatize with her. Nigeria will monitor closely developments around her temporary suspension and appeal.

The second issue had to do with the apparel provided for the team.

The Ministry’s responsibility and that of the 38 National Sporting Federations, NSFs of kitting are well spelt out. The production of general wears for Team Nigeria is always the responsibility of the Ministry of Youth and Sport Development. Procurement for the Competition Wear is the responsibility of the respective federations because of the fact that each sport requires specialized outfits. Boxing, Wrestling, Atheletics and each of the federations need different gears. The Ministry provides budgetary support to the federations.

The quantity of competition wears given to each athlete is the decision of the particular federation. No complaints came to my notice until the Tik Tok Video posted by one of the athletes went viral. We Immediately stepped in to manage the situation. The Federation involved has been directed to provide a detailed explanation about the kit.

Team Nigeria was properly kitted for the games with a 9-item back pack using a local manufacturer in harmony with President Buhari’s policy on local content.

Before any federation which is a component of Team Nigeria however wears any brand, it must refer to the Ministry and the NOC for clearance and approval. The Ministry and NOC must be fully aware of the contract details by the Federation to protect the rights and freedoms of the athletes and ensure Nigeria’s interests are protected. In this situation, the Ministry wishes to state that the contractual arrangement between AFN and Puma prior to the Olympic Games has generated a lot of controversy between the former President of the Federation and the former Board members. I will not want to go into too much details on this issue because it is sub judice. Suffice it to say that the Ministry was not part of the agreement. The Tik Tok video on the issue was an attempt to create a media frenzy to embarrass Nigeria.

Following from the above, the issue relating to the competition wears vis a vis the alleged arrangement with Puma is most unfortunate. I have demanded a proper investigation into this matter. Such an inquiry will unearth the truth about how some people tried to sabotage Nigeria’s participation and undermine the country and our Olympic athletes.

On assumption of office as Minister of Youth and Sports 2 years ago, I began a gradual reformation of the National Sports Federations, NSFs.  For years, a few of these federations were very badly run. These reforms will take time. There already is and will be stiff resistance from some quarters, which is what we are witnessing now. But we are resolute to establish better sport’s management, a legacy President Muhammadu Buhari is desirous of bequeathing to our sports development.

There is much to hope for the future. In Tokyo, Most of our athletes were young and debutants – first time Olympians. They gave their all. If only we can support them in a sustained manner, they will give us future Olympic medals and raise high the flag of Nigeria at all venues of international sports competition. We have started building a new generation of Young Nigerian athletes who will benefit immensely from the Nigerian Sports Industry Policy which will be placed before the Federal Executive Council for approval shortly. This policy will unleash the economic potential of our sports sector following President Buhari’s reclassification of sports as a business, away from recreation. This will be the foundation for sustained sector growth and maximization of our human resources.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics experience will move and challenge me to push our sports to a higher level and seek a better condition for all our athletes.

Team Nigeria went to Tokyo 2020 and competed against the best in the world. Two Olympics medals and a statistical performance that has a place in the history of our Olympic participation despite being one of our smallest contingents. We can perform even much better if we alI hold onto the lessons learnt.

I remain grateful to all the athletes that so represented Nigeria well.

News Analysis

The news of the death of former governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi which filtered in on Thursday afternoon, leaving the people with shock was the climax of rumours about his health status that had been trending for some days.

Many had been praying that Senator Ajimobi would survive the hospitalisation on account of Covid-19 complications and come out alive but this was not to be.

The former governor who was born at Oja Iba in Ibadan, Oyo State on December 16, 1949 had a privileged background.

His grandfather was the Sobaloju of Ibadan land, his father, Pa Ajimobi was also a member of the House of Assembly in the old Western Region, while his uncle, Honourable N.A Ajimobi was Minister of Works and Transport in the Western Region.

Senator Ajimobi started his primary education at Ibadan City Council Primary School, Aperin, his secondary education was at Lagelu Grammar School.

He was active in athletics, table tennis and football including serving as the games prefect during his secondary school days and this earned him the nickname “Archipelago”.

Late Ajimobi studied Business Administration and Finance at the State University of New York in Buffalo, New York, United States of America, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree.

He had his MBA in Operations Research and Marketing with concentration in finance at Governors State University, University Park, Illinois.

Senator Ajimobi married Florence Ajimobi in 1980 and the marriage was blessed with five children.

In 2007, Senator Ajimobi contested the gubernatorial seat of Oyo State under the umbrella of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, but lost.

Undaunted, he gave it another shot in 2011 under the banner of Action Congress of Nigeria and won.

In April, 2015 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, he made history as the first governor to win a re-election and in succession, defeating two of his predecessors in office, Chief Christopher Alao-Akala and Alhaji Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

Senator Ajimobi lost his bid to return to the senate on the platform of the APC to the incumbent Senator Kola Balogun of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, who clinched the seat of the Oyo South Senatorial District in the 2019 General Elections.

Shortly before his death, the late senator who was the Deputy National Chairman ,South, was named and endorsed as the Caretaker National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress Party following the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole by the Court of Appeal.

The Oyo State former helmsman who bestrode the political terrain with elegance meant different things to different people.

To admirers, he was the architect of modern Oyo State while others are quick to point to his blunt nature and unbridled utterances which set him on war path with some as a minus.

President Muhammadu Buhari described the late governor as steadfast and consistent with progressive view, someone who worked assiduously for the creation of APC.

The president noted that Ajimobi died at a crucial time when the party and the country needed his counsels to heal and grow.

On his part, All Progressives Congress Chieftain, Senator Bola Tinubu said the party had lost an outstanding statesman, a dedicated friend, brother and ally.

To the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, Dr Kayode Fayemi the death of Senator Ajimobi was a personal loss and a huge loss to the people of Oyo state in particular and Nigeria in general.

The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare who described Ajimobi as his elder brother noted that his death came too early.

Ajimobi’s successor and incumbent governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde said Ajimobi would be missed for leaving a blueprint for some of the activities that his administration was undertaking.

As the sun sets on the life and times of Senator Ajimobi on Thursday, 25th June, 2020, one thing is certain; his memory will continue to linger in the minds of all and sundry.
