It was just a month ago that the 2023 general election ended with the conduct of Governorship and House of Assembly elections, precisely on the 18th of March, 2023.

The election began with the Presidential and National Assembly elections with the presidential fielding major contenders including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party, NNPP.

However, the governorship election was only conducted in 28 states of the Federation.

In Oyo State, the election saw the incumbent governor, Seyi Makinde, seeking a second term under the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP while the APC presented Teslim Folari as the flagbearer and Adebayo Adelabu as the governorship candidate of the Accord Party, A.

While the presidential election produced Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu of the APC as the winner of the poll, while that of Oyo State saw the emergence of Seyi Makinde as the governor-elect having cleared 31 out of 33 local governments.

Due to electoral malpractice, The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared the governorship election in some states inconclusive.

The outcome of the election had since been attracting reactions and counter-reactions on how well the nation faired in the conduct of the election.

Expressing their views  on Mid-Week Cruise, a socio-political-economic programme, anchored by Dayo Adenuga and Belinda Quadri on Premier Fm, a cross-section of residents of Ibadan, said the outcome of the elections particularly the governorship in Oyo State, was indicative of the peoples’ choice, just as seen in one of the comments,

“The election showed that the people of the state believe in the efficacy of his campaign promises. A campaign that was issue-based and the charming heart of a leader to set the pace in Oyo and a result of governor Makinde’s hard work and commitment to the welfare of the people of Oyo State”.

Some others however expressed reservations about the presidential election.

Voices of residents of Ibadan on the last general election.

Analysing the elections, a journalist, Mr Oluwakayode Banjo, said the election was a reflection of ethnic and religious bias.

Oluwakayode Banjo analysing the 2023 elections

Meanwhile, statistics from the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, showed that violence occurred in 10.8% of all the polling units.

Compared to the hitches experienced during the presidential and national assembly elections, the Centre for Democracy and Development, applauded INEC for improving its performance, especially in the use of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, during the governorship election.

In the assessment of some election monitoring observers, the election generally witnessed a low turnout compared to the 2019 general elections.

Reasons adduced include violence, intimidation of voters, online and offline threats, fake news and fear of the unknown.

A former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has blamed stakeholders and politicians for a majority of the problems facing the country currently.

He said this on Thursday while speaking on “The Morning Show” of a TV station in Lagos.

Fayose disclosed that there is a lot wrong with Nigeria, adding that nothing had changed in the country since 1979.

“When you asked (Muhammadu) Buhari in 2015, If you lose the election, would you concede defeat?’ he said ‘I would win’. He never conceived he would lose.

“I told you the senators, House of Reps members are returning to the National Assembly. The system is sick. Nobody is protecting it.

“Rather than blame the Independent National Electoral Commission, we need to draw a red line like the army. Nothing was wrong in the elections,” he said.

Nigerians need to elect leaders that are Godly and not religious bigots for good governance, unity and development of the country.

This was the submission of the Founder and Spiritual leader of Shafaudeen in Islam Worldwide, Professor Sabit Olagoke during the activities marking the 40th Annual Shafaudeen International Convention ‘Ishrat 2023’ Theme: Shaping the Future of Nation, the Future is Now held at its International Headquarters, Wakajaye, Iwo Road, Ibadan.

According to Professor Olagoke, the new leaders must be able to see to restructuring and 1999 Constitution amendment to have fiscal Federalism in place that will allow Regions, States, Local government to control resources for their development through right placement of items in the exclusive li9st and considered concurrent list.

“The only solution to have a breakthrough is to employ merit and due process in promoting values and running the affairs of the Nation objectively without discrimination based on the need to promote inclusive Society for a better and progressive Nigeria free of violence, banditry and, militancy, kidnapping, terrorism and sharp practices (corruption and institutional indiscipline), the hallmark of insecurity that destroy human and material resources rather than building it.”

He expressed hope that the INEC Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) Certification process will lend credibility to the 2023 Elections process for free, credible and fair exercise.

“All of us must effectively participate in voting and monitoring to shun vices.  Healthy competition by politicians in the spirit of healthy sportsmanship for peace to reign is desired if we truly hold to faith.”

Professor Olagoke charged leaders to unveil implementable policies that will promote employment, and people’s capacity building with state-of-the-art equipment to facilitate basic amenities for people’s welfare and wellness.

”Emerging Research and Development for the emancipation of humanity and the environment must therefore preoccupy the leadership role for the dynamics of the country.  Many facilities being enjoyed today across the world are the products of many investors and researchers turning around the fortune of the world to be more habitable for humanity with the trend of development till date”

He challenged Muslims to follow the example of Islamic legends in history not to lag behind in the present global competitive market and global best practices driven by Quality and Standard in evaluation.

“The world craze for materialism through illegal means has led to caustic civilization making us to witness emerging crisis of diseases”

The Islamic leader posited that the impending doom of the evening times is making everybody to be vulnerable hence the need for leaders to concentrate on promoting research and development in their educational institutions that must be functional and adequately driven by the state-of-the-art facilities.

“Researchers are emerging in the various fields of human endeavours.  What of COVID-19 antidote of drugs rejected from Africa continent for lack of scientific backing? Stop underfunding but promote functional education that will enhance initiative development, altruistic life for others benefits and peaceful co-existence without discrimination for enhanced security and unity of the multi-religious country”

The programme also featured recognition and elevation of some founding members of the organization who have sacrificed for its existence and Walimat for graduands who distinguished themselves in quranic memorisation and recitation conducted by the chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheik Abdulganiyy Abubakar  Agbotomokekere

In about a month from now, eligible voters in Nigeria will head to the polls to elect candidates of their choice in the 2023 general elections but then, not all eligible voters find it easy to exercise their franchise due to the essential nature of their jobs.

Journalists, medical practitioners and security personnel fall into this category.

Mr Temidayo Adu, Mrs Modupe Olatunbosun and Mrs Lilian Ibomor are media professionals who should be on the field covering and reporting elections.

Mr Temidayo Adu

As a medical doctor, Fisayo Oluwatosin is expected to be in the hospital attending to patients even on election day.

Enforcing law and order at polling units and centres is critical to the overall success of the electoral process.

However, how possible will it be for security agents to vote on such a very important day?

Oyo State NSCDC Commandant, Mr Micheal Adaralewa

What then is the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC?

Mrs Rosemary Alaba-Adeniyi is the Head of the Voter Education Department, INEC, Oyo State.

As it is, the Nigerian Electoral process is still a work in progress and it is hoped that policymakers will take into cognizance the current gap and do the needful.

As part of measures to root out vote trading, and achieve free, fair, credible and acceptable 2023 elections in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has sought the support of critical stakeholders including the academia, Civil Society organizations and the media.

This was the focus of the roundtable organized by the Electoral Institute, the Research and Documentation Unit of INEC which took place in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The roundtable, which was on the ‘Incidence of Vote Buying and Trading in Ekiti and Osun Governorship Elections: Implications for Democratic Consolidation and 2023 General Elections in Nigeria’ suggested the need for Political will to enforce laws guiding elections.

Presenting the lead paper, former Executive Director of Civil Liberty Organization, CLO, Mrs Ayo Obe pointed out that the problem was capable of derailing the country’s democracy if it was not properly nipped in the bud.

Mrs Obe said it was important for all agencies saddled with the responsibility to enforce the Law.

“Tue problem is twofold, one is that we are not placing enough publicity about punishing those who are involved in the vote buying and selling. If you are caught selling or buying votes you should be made to face the Law. We should enforce the Law and people should see that the law is being enforced”.

“We saw some arrests and since then we do not know what has been happening. In Osun and Ekiti this happened some months ago, people should have been brought to trial and prosecuted by now.”

The human rights activist also said that it behoved people who did not want to sell their votes to come out during elections to outnumber those who wish to sell their votes.

Corroborating this position, one of the participants and a civil society activist, Mr Bukola Idowu berated poor handling of the criminal aspects of the Electoral Law since the return to Democratic governance, describing such as one of the major factors for the emergence of various unlawful means by politicians to circumvent the process.

Mr Idowu explained that the problem should not be discussed only during elections, but rather it should start with the primary of Political parties, most especially the major parties.

He suggested that the emoluments attached to political offices were encouraging unhealthy competition manifesting in vote trading

One of the participants, Professor Olabisi Aina who was represented by Mrs Adefisoye Ibironke noted that vote buying and trading was limiting female participation in the elective competition since women could not raise the huge money required for vote trading.

Earlier, in an address to declare the discourse open, the Chairman of the Board of the INEC Electoral Institute, Professor Abdullahi Abdu Zuru described vote trading as a disturbing issue in the conduct of free, fair, credible and accepted outcome of the election meant to consolidate the nation’s Democracy.

The Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Abdulganiy Raji who delivered the address argued that voting should be in terms of the performance of political gladiators and the willingness of the people to re-elect them based on the fulfilment of their promises.

“What I am saying is that you must ensure that when you are campaigning, you have achievable promises, and when you are in office, you fulfil your promises, it means you are buying votes, but not paying for buying the votes, People would not hesitate to sell their votes to you without collecting Kobo, because you have fulfilled your promises. That is what I mean by vote buying”.

In a welcoming address, the Director General of the electoral institute, Dr Sa’ad Umar Idris charged Nigerians of good conscience not to give up and submit to vote buying/trading as an insurmountable challenge.

Nigerians have been advised to make the right choice in the 2023 presidential election by voting for a leader who has the capacity to make Nigeria’s greatness a reality.

The Director-General, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organization, an amalgamation of over 80 youth-based support groups, Alhaji Bayo Shittu made the call during a news conference in Ibadan.

Alhaji Shittu, who described Asiwaju Tinubu as a leader with a track record of good governance as two-term governor of Lagos state, fairness, justice and equity, urged the electorate to choose a leader who would transform Nigeria into a 21st-century development pace.

He pointed out that the task of marking Asiwaju Tinubu was daunting but expressed optimism that his immense goodwill would be a selling point. Speaking on the Muslim-Muslim ticket, Alhaji Shittu explained that there was the need for Nigerians to prioritize competence and merit in choosing them and play down the tension of primordial sentiments.

“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is married to a pastor in one of the biggest churches in the world, he allows freedom of religion amongst his children, so nobody is closer to Christianity than him. More so, when we get to Airport, we don’t ask for the religion of the pilot but who has the expertise to take us to a safe destination. Nigeria is like a plane that requires an experienced and capable leader at this point in time”. Alhaji Shittu said.

The DG Asiwaju Bola Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organization described Tinubu as a champion of social justice, who will prioritize the welfare of the youths, women, and the downtrodden with his deep knowledge of the economy.

Alhaji Shittu expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for his patriotism in supporting Asiwaju’s candidacy during the just concluded APC presidential primary, APC Northern governors and other presidential aspirants who stepped down in consideration of Asiwaju Tinubu.

Alhaji Shittu added that a comprehensive manifesto of Seven Point Agenda named Nigeria’s Rebirth Manifesto would be unveiled in the next two months.

Ondo State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Arakunrin Olúwarotimi Akeredolu had onFriday lambasted the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, for his brazen act of running for the 2023 Presidency whilst in office.

Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, declared Emefiele’s action as odd and  illegal.

The Ondo governor noted strongly that Emefiele must quit his role as CBN governor else President Muhammadu Buhari must remove him forthwith.
Emefiele has been CBN governor since 2014.

He reportedly picked the N100m presidential nomination and expression of interest forms of the All Progressives Congress on Friday.

Banners and advert materials of the CBN governor had been in public domain while his support groups have been mobilising for him across the country, holding conferences and rallies.

In a statement he personally signed on Friday night, Governor Akeredolu condemned the action of Emefiele who also reportedly visited Buhari in Aso Villa on Friday to inform the President of his 2023 presidential ambition.

Akeredolu’s statement was titled, ‘The CBN Governor Must Disengage Forthwith’.

It read, “The news of the purchase of Declaration of Intent and Nomination Forms to contest for the office of the President in the forthcoming general elections, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, purportedly by the supporters of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has been received with palpable disbelief and shock by many Nigerians. This act, if unchecked, timeously, portends great danger to the fragile economy of the country.

“Rumours had been rife on the subterranean partisan activities linked to him through these shadowy characters in the recent weeks. Pictures of branded vehicles, ostensibly purchased for electioneering campaigns, were also posted on the social media. The audacious moves by those who claimed to be supporting this interest have been unsettling.

This latest news confirms that the Governor may indeed be interested in immersing himself in the murky waters of politics like any other Nigerian with partisan interests. It is incontrovertible that Mr Emefiele enjoys a constitutionally protected right to belong to any group or association and participate fully, just as any Nigerian.

“It is, however, difficult to imagine that a person who occupies the exalted and sensitive office of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria will be this brazen in actualizing his ambition.

“There is no gain asserting the obvious. The combined effect of the Public Service Rules, CBN Act and the 1999 Constitution, as amended, exposes not only the oddity inherent in this brash exercise of presumed right to associate.

“It also confirms the illegality of the act should he proceed to submit the forms while occupying the seat as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“Consequently, we admonish Mr Emefiele to leave the office, immediately, for him to pursue his interest. He cannot combine partisan politics with the very delicate assignment of his office. Should he refuse to quit, it becomes incumbent on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to remove him forthwith.

This is a joke taken too far.”
