23-Year-Old Accident Victim Laid to Rest in Ibadan

The remains of Dorcas  Egunjobi, a 23 year old mother of one that was allegedly killed in an accident that occurred at Odeku area of Oluyole local government Oyo state has been buried.

Dorcas a mother-of-one was said to be coming from her shop when she met her untimely  death.
It was gathered that  the motorcycle she boarded  together with her four year old daughter colluded with a Lorry at odeku and she died immediately.


 speaking with radio Nigeria the husband of the deceased Mr makinde in a sorrowful laden voice described the incident as unfortunate.


Radio Nigeria correspondent that visited the scene explained  that the issue had triggered a protest by some youths in the area as they barricaded motorist and commercial motorcyclists from carrying out their normal duties.


 Two members of the youths  forum in the area Mr olamide Badru  popularly called biggi and Mr adetunji ridwan said the protest was to call the attention of the Oyo state government  and the house of assembly representative for the area  Tolu Sadie to the situation.


they lamented that similar incident had claimed lives of  three other person within two months.
a leader in the community, Mr Demola Areo urged  concerned authority to find a lasting solution to the issue so as to put an end to wanton loss of live.


As at the time of this report, normalcy has returned to the area following an appeal by some elderly members of the community.

Oyo Assembly Urges Inclusion of Mobil-7up-Oluyole Road in 2022 Budget

Following the deplorable condition of Mobil-7up-Oluyole Road in Ibadan South West Local Government area of Oyo State, the state House of Assembly has urged the Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde to include the reconstruction of the road in the 2022 budget.

The appeal was contained in a motion presented by the lawmaker representing Ibadan South West state constituency two, Mr Adebayo Fowokanmi.

Mr. Fowokanmi, while presenting the motion expressed that the significance of Mobil-7up-Oluyole Estate Road to the economic development of Oyo State cannot be over emphasized.

According to the lawmaker, “Mr. Speaker, honourable colleagues, it is pertinent the draw your attention to the significance of Oluyole Estate, which harbours residential, commercial and industrial components. Also, Oluyole Industrial Estate harbours the largest concentration of industrial concern in the entire Old Western Region.

“The Mobil-7up-Oluyole Estate Road network if well harnessed will make the Estate a cash cow for the state government through active revenue drive of relevant agencies,’ he said.

He said that reconstruction of Mobil-7up-Oluyole Estate Road will not only help in decongestion of usual traffic on Oluyole-Aare Road which currently is the only motorable road for the people of the community, but will increase the revenue base of the state.  

Mr. Fowokanmi further disclosed that the present condition of the road has turned the area to a den for criminal minded people at night, where robbery is being easily carried out on motorists.

While commending Governor Seyi Makinde for the achievements recorded so far in the area of infrastructure, Mr. Fowokanmi stated that the 65km Moniya-Ijaye-Iseyin road, the ongoing Saki town hall road, and the newly flagged off 45km Saki-Igboho-Igboro road are good testimony of Governor Makinde’s commitment towards development of the state.

The Minority Leader, Mr. Asimiyu Alarape, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji (Ogbomoso North) and Mr. Babajide Gabriel (Ibadan North 2), who seconded the motion also supported all the prayers by the mover of the motion.

The Speaker, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, while passing the resolutions, urged the state governor to consider the reconstruction of the road in the 2022 budget.

The Speaker also urged the Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency (OYSROMA) to carry out some palliative work on the road before rehabilitation, as well as security agents to carry out regular patrol on the road to curb robbery and other criminal acts.

Community Protests Perennial Blackout in Ibadan

Residents of Afonta community in Ibadan North West local government have protested perennial power outage.

Radio Nigeria who visited the area observed that the residents were visibly angry at the development.

Reacting, the community leader of Afonta, Mrs Toyin Balogun said despite their contributions to the installation of transformer to the area, Ibadan electricity distribution company, IBEDC left them in total darkness.

A youth leader Mr Akinbode Olayinka who described their situation as pathetic, noted that IBEDC was giving them exorbitant estimated billing without electricity for the past seven months. 

Another resident, Faith Osawe, equally lamented that the police barrack which shared fence with IBEDC office in Dugbe was also without power supply.

All efforts to speak with IBEDC authorities proved abortive as at time of filling this report.

South West Governors Must Ensure Peace in The Region – Catholic Bishops

Catholic Bishops of Ibadan ecclesiastical province have enjoined South-West governors to ensure full implementation of various modalities aimed at ensuring peaceful–co-existence in the region.
They made this known in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting held in Ibadan.

Christmas: Shoppers Decry High Cost of Goods

With Christmas just a few hours away, traders in Ibadan have lamented hike in prices of commodities.
Radio Nigeria correspondent who visit some markets in Ibadan including Dugbe, Ogunpa, Agbeni, Bodija and Ọjà Ọba markets reports that some traders who deal in pepper and rice also decried low patronage.
The traders attributed the hike in prices to the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest and the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
Textile and shoe traders explained that high cost of production was responsible for the increase in price of most their merchandise.
In the same vein, some of the buyers at the markets lamented that their purchasing power has been weakened due to the inflated cost of goods.
They, however, expressed hope that they would be able to buy other items needed for the festive season whenever December salaries were paid.

None of our men was involved in Born Photo fracas – Amotekun Corps

The newly inaugurated Oyo State Security Network, codenamed “Amotekun Corps” has dismissed the report going round that a member of the corps opened gunfire on some residents of Ibadan, killing two and injuring many.


The corps Public Relations Officer, Mrs Ayolola Adedoja who stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria said the perpetrator was not a member of Amotekun.

Mrs Adedoja confirmed that there was a crisis around Born Photo and Isale Osi area, of Ibadan involving men of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) and some hoodlums.

According to her, the operatives of Amotekun Corps were only invited to enforce peace within the said area.

Radio Nigeria gathered that two persons were shot dead during the fracas.

Is This Another Case Of Police Brutality?

A fashion designer, Lukman Adeniyi has been charged to court after he was allegedly assaulted by his accuser, a Divisional Police Officer in charge of Iyaganku Division in Ibadan, Oyo State Police Command, CSP Alex Sani Gwazah, over the DPO’s claim that he damaged the clothes given to him to sew.

Adeniyi was arraigned on Tuesday, November 3, at Court 8, Magistrates’ Court, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

The DPO had earlier accused the defendant of damaging his clothes worth 181,000 naira which he gave Adeniyi to sew in September.

Gwazah claimed that the sewn 12 pieces of clothes delivered to him by the defendant, were made by an apprentice, which was against the agreement they had.

The Magistrate of the court, Olajumoke Akande who granted the defendant bail of 50,000 naira, with two persons as surety in like sum, adjourned the case till November 17, 2020, for further hearing.

Earlier, the defendant, Adeniyi, explained that DPO was introduced to him by one Alhaji Idris Bawa who had been his customer for over ten years.

He said the DPO had slapped him on the day he delivered the twelve materials given him on the allegation that his clothes were not well sewn.

The fashion designer further explained that, the Gwazah collected all the sewn materials without payment despite the sixty thousand naira agreement reached.

Adeniyi said the DPO invited him to come for his money last Saturday but when he got there, the DPO immediately ordered that he be detained.

Counsel to the defendant, Jubril Olanrewaju who described the DPO’s action as an abuse of office expressed confidence that justice will be served.

Another human rights lawyer, Mr Ademola Salami lamented that the action of Gwaza could make more people lose confidence in the police force.

Loyalists Recover Some Looted Items at Senator Folarin’s Residence

Some loyalists of Senator Representing Oyo Central senatorial district, Teslim Folarin have recovered some items carted away by some people from the Oluyole Estate residence of the senator in Ibadan.

People had this morning embarked on a looting spree at Senator Folarin’s house, carting away some motorcycles and generators meant for empowerment programme.

However, due to the timely intervention of officers of the combined security operative’s tagged “Operation Burst”, the loyalists who were earlier overpowered by the attackers were able to recover some motorcycles and generators kept in a nearby bush.

Radio Nigeria correspondent reports that a tricycle brought by one of the attackers to convey some of the looted items was impounded by the loyalists of Senator Folarin, while cartons of the carted away generators littered the main road.

Dredging: Residents of Onipepeye Laud Oyo Government

Residents, traders and motorists in Onipepeye, Ibadan have expressed appreciation to government for dredging the river in the area.

This was in fulfilment of the Oyo State Government’s promise to dredge rivers in the state to prevent flooding.

The traders expressed relief that the exercise would greatly reduce the impact of flood on the area.

It would be recalled that the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr  Debo  Ogundoyin  had urged the state government to implement concrete plans to curtail flood incidences in the state.

NEMA, NSCDC Takes Disaster Management Campaign to Markets

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Oyo state command has commenced sensitization campaign on disaster management.

The campaign was led by the NSCDC Commandant in Oyo state, Mr Iskilu Akinsanya to various markets in Ibadan which included Bodija, Agbeni, Ogunpa, Idi-ikan, Molete, Oja’ba, Bere and Yemetu areas.

The campaign which focused on, COVID-19, road accident, fire outbreaks, building collapse and flooding was themed “lockdown disaster“.

While declaring the campaign open, Commandant Iskilu said the programme became imperative to sensitize the public on managing disaster, especially flood as the rainy season intensifies.

Mr Iskilu said dumping refuse in the water ways and gutters always results to flooding which always bring about destruction of property as well as death.

Corroborating, Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mr Slaku Bigini noted that the agency had partnered  different stakeholders to sensitize and warn people who are fond of disposing their refuse in rivers, gutters and water ways.

Some traders in the markets who benefited from the campaign said they appreciated NEMA and NSCDC’s efforts and promised to spread the message and also abide by the rules to collectively prevent flooding and other natural disasters.

The respondents therefore called on others to desist from any act that could jeopardize lives and properties of the citizenry.

UCH CMD Eulogises Late Oladipo Akinkugbe

Late Emeritus Professor Oladipupo Akinkugbe has been described as a colossus who impacted positively on the medical and academic world during his lifetime.


The Cheif Medical Director, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Professor Jesse Otegbayo stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria.

Professor Otegbayo who was part of the medical team that treated professor Akinkugbe explained that his death was a big loss to the medical fraternity and academic community.


In the same vein a Professor of medicine Solomon Kadiri said Professor Akinkugbe a great man and one of the fathers of medicine would be greatly missed.

He noted that the icon has trained a lot of people who would carry on in Nigeria and abroad especially in the United Kingdom.

Professor Otegbayo said Late professor Akinkugbe was former board Chairman of UCH and during his time the hospital witnessed tremendous development.

Professor Ahinkugbe who died at the age of 87 was first vice Chancellor Ahmadu Bello University, first vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, pro chancellor University of Portharcourt, first chairman of JAMB.

As a nephrologist, Professor Akinkugbe practiced and taught medicine in various universities across the globe.

The Criterion Advocates Justice for Ibadan Victims of Rape, Murder

Oyo State Government has been charged to ensure security operatives bring to book the perpetrators of rape and murder of two women in Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan. 

The leadership of Oyo District of The Criterion, an association of Muslim women in business and the professions made the call while on a condolence visit to the families of Barakat Bello at Oloro and Azeezat Shomuyiwa at Ijefun communities in Akinyele Local Government.

Addressing the families of the victims, Amirah of The Criterion, Oyo District, Alhaja Falilat Olatunji said the rate at which women were being murdered was worrisome calling on government to ensure the perpetrators were booked. 

“I don’t know how individuals staying in a populated environment could be murdered in broad day light without being arrested. The government must ensure that the perpetrators are fished out. They should be able to trace the evil ones behind the cases”.

The National Vice- President of the Association, Alhaja Medinat Akanni decried rape cases which had become rampant urging government and security agencies in the state to collaborate to ensure that justice prevails.

“In all ramifications, we say no to rape, there must be an end to it. We encourage our security outfits and other stakeholders to beef up security and safe people’s lives. Enough is enough”.

Another member of the association, Alhaja Sukura Jimoh urged the families to take the incidents as acts of God and prayed Allah count the deceased as inmates of Aljannah Firdaos.

In their separate remarks, the mother of late Barakat, Mrs Kafayat Bello and mother in law of late Azeezat, Mrs Oluwatoyin Imam expressed displeasure over the sudden demise of their daughters and called for justice to serve as deterrent to others.

“It was around 5:30 pm that the incident happened. I want government to bring out those behind the dastardly act as I can’t see my promising daughter again”.

“This has to end, this is our turn today. Government must do something about this ungodly act to prevent future recurrence”.

Apart from the relatives that were consoling the parents, other Muslim faithful including members of Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN, which is the organisation that the victims belonged to were also around to pay tributes.

Security personnel were also on ground within the areas. 

Last week, an 18 year old Barakat Bello was raped and killed at her parent’s home while Azeezat Shomuyiwa, a 29 year old pregnant woman was also murdered at her residence.

NYSC Cancels Orientation Camps Nationwide

The National Youth Service Corps NYSC has abruptly shut down all orientation camp nationwide over the recently reported cases of coronavirus in the country.

The shutdown of the NYSC orientation camps is coming barely Six days after Corps members were sworn in on Thursday the 12th of March.

Corps members across the country were scheduled to leave camps on the 30th of March, while the stream 2 Corps members were expected to resume camp on the 2nd of April.

Some Corps members in Ibadan North West Local Government have expressed concern and called for the cancellation of the weekly Community Development Service, CDS which has in attendance about 700 members.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has currently confirmed three cases of coronavirus and no reports of deaths.

The disease has killed over 7,000 people globally, mainly in China, Italy, Iran and South Korea.

Oyo Fire Service Saves Property from Being Gutted

But for prompt action of firefighters, property worth millions of Naira would have been destroyed by fire at Ogunpa area of Ibadan in the early hours of today (Thursday). 

This fire, which was believed to be a consequence of power surge in an electrical appliances store, set the shop ablaze. 

A witness, Mrs. Bukola Adesanya, who said the fire started around half past nine in the morning, noted that but for quick response of firefighters, the fire would have extended to other buildings.

Officer in Charge Operations, Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Odebunmi Gbadebo, said its men swung into action following a distress call by members of the public. 

Mr. Gbadebo, while noting that the fire had been successfully put out, urged the public to always switch off their electrical appliances when they were away. 

Some other respondents applauded the fire service for quick response and implored them to sustain the tempo in the year 2020.

OYRTMA Warns Commercial Motorists against Illegal Parking

The management of Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYTRMA) has warned all commercial motorists to desist from using major roads as motor parks to avoid unnecessary loss of lives to accidents and incessant traffic gridlocks. 

The warning was issued as OYRTMA officers, led by the State Commander, Ayoade Adeoye, visited the Iwo Road interchange to rid the road of commercial vehicles using the roads as illegal parks.

Speaking with the leadership of the parks, Mr. Adeoye urged them to direct their commercial drivers to stick to their designated motor-parks as any vehicle apprehended for illegal parking would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

He said the intrastate drivers who did not have designated motor parks should approach the agency to look into the matter.

Traders within the Iwo Road interchange were also asked to relocate their goods to the appropriate market area for their safety.
