Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has presented two hundred thousand naira cash each to 250 Elders in Oyo State under her Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme.

During the second edition of the programme held at the Oyo State Government’s House in Ibadan, Senator Tinubu noted that the welfare programme would support the elders and the vulnerable in Society.

Represented by the wife of the Oyo State governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, she called on the elderly to maintain a healthy lifestyle and always ensure that they get adequate rest and commended the medical personnel who were attending to the elders.

The First Lady identified the lack of good research, documentation and a database as a bane of seeking qualitative health services.

Senator Tinubu explained that the grant had been increased from what was given last year which was 100,000 thousand naira, considering the economic situation and to support the elders during this festive period 

Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Toyin Balogun advised the beneficiaries to invest the money judiciously by considering investing in some medium-scale businesses.

Some of the elders, The newsletter Editor of the National Council for Women Society, Dr Lanre Sanya, and Mrs Alice Babatunde thanked the first lady for the gesture.

The highlight of the programme was the attending elders’ visit to the medical personnel on the ground at the event for various medical check-ups which included, blood sugar, high blood pressure, and malaria among others.

Vaccinating girls between ages 9 and 14 against the Human Papiloma Virus will help shield them from Cervical cancer.

Oyo State First Lady, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde stated this at the Flag off Ceremony of the Human Papilomavirus Virus Vaccination, HPV, in Oyo State held at Saint Paul Anglican Primary School, Iyanbule, Basorun Ibadan.
Represented by Wife of Oyo State Deputy Governor, Mrs Ajibola Lawal, Mrs Makinde explained that HPV is the primary cause of Cervical Cancer and is the second most common cause of death among women in Nigeria.
She affirmed that the decision to administer the HPV Vaccine to the age bracket was guided by sound scientific evidence, pointed out that the Vaccine is most effective when administered early against the virus before any potential exposure.
Mrs Makinde said the proactive approach would ensure that young girls have a better chance and a healthy future.
Speaking at the event, the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwasherimi Ajetunmobi urged people to disregard any myths and misconceptions that the HPV Vaccine causes Infertility.
“Over 600,000 young girls would be vaccinated in Oyo State according to what they gave to Oyo State.”
“HPV vaccine is going to be part of our routine programme and it is going to be given to Children from nine years.”
” As time goes on if any of anyone is allergic to the products of the vaccine such children may not be given” she said.
Dr Ajetunmobi appealed to parents and guardians to ensure their young girls get vaccinated, stressing that safeguarding the health of the people is a priority of the state government
Also Speaking, A Health Specialist at UNICEF, Dr Ijeoma Agbo while commending Oyo State Government for measures put in place to ensure children at the grassroots get vaccinated, reiterated that the vaccine would be available at the primary health care centers across the state.

The Amira, Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria,Oyo State Chapter, Dr Lateefat Dahiro, who spoke through Alhaja Fawzeeya Adeleye described the exercise as a great achievement to the state and promised that the association would amplify their voice in educating people.

In an interview with Radio Nigeria, Two Students who were elated for getting vaccinated, said they were glad to be protected from HPV.

High point of the event was the administering of the HPV Vaccine to eligible young girls.

Present at the event were, Health Personnel, Traditional Rulers, Religious leaders, Market Women and Students.

In the Meantime, The Executive Secretary, Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Muideen Olatunji has assured that out of School and the disabled children in Oyo State will be vaccinated against Human Papiloma Virus, HPV.

Dr Olatunji who made this known during a news briefing at Secretariat, Ibadan said no eligible young girls will be left out as hook and crannies areas will be visited to ensure they all benefit from the programme.

He said the infection could be contacted through sexual intercourse by having multiple partners and could affect both males and females but more pronounced in female because it prediposes them to Cerval Cancer.

Dr Olatunji emphasized the need for journalists to effectively sensitize people on efficacy of HPV Vaccine.

He noted that HPV vaccine was not newly introduced in the country, and those who have been vaccinated are healthy without complications, encourage women and men to visit Medical Health Facilities for Cancer Screening at least once in a year for precautions.

The Executive Secretary maintained that HPV Vaccines are safe to human body, enjoined parents and guardians whose wards have any symptoms after taken the HPV vaccines to visit any Primary Healthcare Center.

Wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde stated this at an end-of-the-year party organized for women in the state.

Mrs Makinde said Jesus Christ was given freely to mankind by God to express supernatural love to human beings.

The wife of the governor called on the women to be empowered and equipped to be able to face and overcome challenges which might confront them

In her welcome address, Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja Faosat Sanni called on women to exercise their franchise during the election and should not be found missing on election days.

The women, who were drawn from all the thirty-three local government areas of the state received cash gifts and food items.

Two of the beneficiaries, Mrs Ajara Jimoh and Mrs OluwaSeyifunmi Adesope thanked the wife of the governor for the gesture and promised to use the gifts judiciously.

Diligence is a major driving force for success.

This was the submission of the Wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde on this year’s international day of the girl Child. 

Mrs Makinde played host to female secondary school students from various schools in Oyo state at the house of Chiefs, Secretariat Ibadan.

While advising the girls, Mrs Makinde appealed to them to prioritize hard work and dedication for them to become great achievers in their chosen careers.

Mrs Makinde maintained that though the campaign for the rights of the girl Child had been on for years, all hands must be on deck to make this a reality.

The State’s Commissioner for Education, Mr Abdulraheem Abdulrahmam said girls were endowed as agents of change hence the need for them to always speak up against the ills of society such as Female Genital Mutilation, Child Marriage and other social vices.

He tasked them not to see themselves as weaker vessels but should be among decision-makers who were making waves in their chosen careers such as Tobi Amusan, Azeezat Oshoala and Funke Akindele among others.

The students described the program as an eye-opener for them in knowing their rights in society.

Two of them, Sukurat Adeyemi and Olusolape Uzain promised to always maintain their rights and would not abuse them.

The programme featured the presentation of gifts of laptops to the best students in the Junior West African Examination Council (WAEC), a drama presentation and a cultural dance.

This year’s theme of the international day of the girl Child is “Our time is now, Our rights and Our future.

The wife of Oyo state governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has promised victims of gender-based Violence of her unflinching support.

Mrs Makinde made the promise after a stakeholder’s meeting with two under-aged abused victims in her office 

Mrs Makinde who maintained that abusers must not go unpunished called for an end to the stigmatization of victims.

“The stakeholders meeting was to embrace one or two victims that had been sexually assaulted, to let them know that they are not alone and to also re-evaluate what we have done in the state to see how we can serve the state better. We have looked at how the ministry of women affairs and social inclusion can better embrace and restructure some of the things they do.

 The community should allow the law to take its course so that perpetrators will not commit the crime again”

In his submission, the state’s commissioner of Police, Mr Williams Adebowale said the force was ready to partner with the office of the wife of the governor to end gender-based Violence.

CP Adebowale, who called for the restoration of family values, said its absence had been eroding morals in the society.

Similarly, The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion in the state, Alhaja Kafilat Olayiwola called on victims of gender-based Violence to utilize the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, VAPP.

Wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has urged all students in Oyo State, especially those who are preparing to write this year’s West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National Examination Council (NECO) to be focused and be good ambassadors of the State in their studies by passing the examinations in flying colours among their counterparts across the Nation.

Mrs. Makinde gave the charge at an educational empowerment programme held at the presidential Lodge, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to her, the motive behind the empowerment programme is to remember some indigent students and assist to help them actualize their dreams of becoming great in life which can be possible through acquiring qualitative education because education is the passport to a brighter future and many higher places.

Mrs. Makinde said that the empowerment programme which was the first of its kind aside the free and quality education given to all children both in primary and secondary schools in the State by Governor Seyi Makinde selected about 100 students randomly across the State.

She noted that the selected student were being empowered and supported with the fund for their WAEC/NECO Examination Fees and compendium materials of past questions for them to to be successful and come out in flying colours in their examinations.

Mrs. Makinde therefore, commended the Seyi Makinde Touching Lives Groups for working behind the scene to make sure the past questions papers that are compiled are real, clean, bold enough and ready for use.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Professor Dawud Sangodoyin, said that the empowerment programme was an important one and a good initiative.

Wife of Oyo state Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has called on women and youths in the state to look inwards and identify their potential and skills, which they can utilize to empower themselves,thereby reducing unemployment rate in the society.

Mrs Makinde made the call while speaking at the opening ceremony of the Adire Market Week which was held at the June 12 Cultural Center, Abeokuta and hosted by the wife of Ogun state Governor, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun.

Mrs Makinde said youths and women must identify skills as potential for wealth creation and poverty alleviation, urging them to see how they can leverage on government support.

The governor’s wife who commended Nigerians for their love and creativity in exploring the country’s potential thereby boosting the made in Nigeria products globally.

Mrs Makinde who thanked Mrs Abiodun for protecting the heritage, culture and tradition of Ogun state noted that Oyo government would also improve on the resources and skills it has, not just to empower people at the grassroots alone but to also improve the states’ economy.

Speaking at the event, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun described Adire fabric as a unique cultural outfit which had helped reduce poverty, aid employment and provided window for economic diversification in the state.

The event had in attendance, Former President chief Olusegun Obasanjo Former Governor of Ogun state chief Olusegun Osoba and wife of Speaker of House of Representatives, Mrs Gbajabiamila.Wives of Lagos and Edo State governors.

The Adire market week, a high level engagement for women empowerment and promotion of culture in the state was organised by the Ogun State Government in collaboration with an NGO.

The wife of the Oyo state governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has called on society to extend psychological and emotional support to victims of Female Genital Mutilation.

Mrs Makinde gave the advice at the commemoration of this year’s Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, Day.

The wife of the Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mrs Faosat Sanni noted that when needed support was rendered to victims of FGM it would help reduce the trauma to the barest minimum. 

The director of the population and reproductive health, Dr Oladosu Ojengbede who explained that Oyo state ranked 3rd among states with the highest cases of FGM noted that with an ongoing awareness of the dangers inherent in the act, the number was reducing.

The state reproductive officer coordinating Female Genital Mutilation, Mrs Balqis  Olawoyin said the traditional circumcisers had been working together with them to put an end to the act.

Patron Circumcision Descendants Association of Nigeria, Chief Abiola Ogundokun noted that cutting of female genitals does more harm than good, thereby appealed to other circumcisers engaged in the practice to desist from it.

Chief Ogundokun however, called on the government to empower them as circumcising children had been an age-long source of income for them.

Participants were drawn from PFN women wing, FOMWAN, NASFAT, traditional birth attendants among others.

The wife of the governor of Oyo state, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde gave the advice at the end of the year party organized for children in the state.

Mrs Makinde noted that no matter how little the gift might be, it would definitely have met a need.

The wife of the governor who called on Nigerians to shun selfish attitude reiterated the need to celebrate with moderation.

Wife of the Oyo state governor, Mrs Tamunominini makinde has called on women in an abused relationship to always speak out.

Mrs Makinde gave the advice during a walk to mark the 16 days of activism against gender based violence.

She said seeking help usually reduce the trauma of abuse and rendering assistance to such women would help stabilize them emotionally.

Mrs Makinde called on the society to be sensitive to their plights and give people in an abused relationship a listening ear.

 She said although some families were going through economic challenges which may affect their finances, this should not be basis to abuse one’s spouse.

During the rally against gender based violence, Some Women in the state raised concern against the act.

The women who registered their grievances against rape, sexual abuse, beating and all forms of violence, called for an end to abuses confronting them.

The walk which took off from government house Agodi and terminated at the office of the wife of the governor had some government officials, including secretary to the State government, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun head of service, Alhaja Ololade Agboola,  commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja  Faosat Sanni and Special Adviser to Oyo state governor on diaspora matters, Mrs Bolanle Sarumi among others. 

Every 25th of November is a day of Elimination of violence against women, while the 16 days of activism in commemoration of the day continues till 10th December.

The wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has called on female students to be more involved in the technological revolution being experienced in the world to be at par, with their male counterparts.

Mrs Makinde made the call at a programme organized for the girls to commemorate this year’s international day of the girl child at the house of chiefs, secretariat, Ibadan.

Wife of the Governor who stressed the benefits of technology noted that the key to changing the future for the better lay in the digital world, which must be embraced by the girls.

Mrs Makinde called on the girls not to think that technology was boys’ business, stressing the enormous role it played during last year’s lockdown caused by the covid-19 outbreak.

In her lecture, Senior Special Adviser to the governor on intervention, Mrs Aderonke Adedayo charged the girls to be careful with the use of their phones to utilize technology positively.

Some girls at the program promised to use their technological knowledge to improve themselves and better society.

The female students who were over 600 in number were drawn from sixty-six secondary schools across the State.

Girls need to observe all necessary hygienic practice, especially during their menstrual period. 

Two Speakers gave the advice at a one day programme tagged ” The girl matters, A day out with girls”  organized by wife of  the Oyo State governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde 

The speakers explained that good hygienic practice would  prevent  infections getting into girls urinary tract.

One of the speakers, the  permanent secretary, ministry of education and science Mrs Aminat Atere  maintained that poor menstrual hygiene could lead to health challenges.

Another speaker, the permanent secretary ministry of women affairs and social inclusion, Mrs Christiana Abioye said attaining menstrual age should not be a license to sexual activities for the girls and total abstinence was the best.

While answering questions from the students secretary to Oyo State Government,Mrs Olubanwo Adeosun and the head of service, Mrs ololade Agboola called on the girls to understand their body make up in order to take the right step at the right time.

The convener of the programme Mrs Tamunominini makinde, encouraged the girls to make their education a priority and not engage in sexual activities which could  jeopardise their future ambitions.

Highlights of the program was the presentation of sanitary pads and some other girls items to the 200 students drawn from various schools across Oyo state.

Over two hundred thousand residents of Oyo State have benefitted from the free medical outreach programme organized by the state’s Ministry of Health in partnership with Omi Titun Free Medical Mission Outreach.

The programme, which kick-started from Ibarapa East Local Government Area of the state had patients with cataract, hernia, appendicitis, malaria,  blood pressure and dental challenges as beneficiaries.

At the closing of the twenty three days medical outreach programme, wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, implored people of the state to prioritize their health and maintain a perfect healthy life.

Mrs Makinde said the free health programme was targeted at promoting healthy living to boost socio economic development. 

According to the Director, Secondary Health Care Outreach, Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr Wale Falana, the programme had mostly captured the vulnerable in the society.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Bashir Bello said the programme, which had gone round various local governments in the state, would be done quarterly.

Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, which is the cutting or total removal of the external female genitals, has been described as a violation of human rights, health and integrity of girls and women.

This was stated by the wife of the governor of Oyo state, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde at a program to commemorate this year’s International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM.

Mrs Makinde who called for collaborative effort to end the practice said the act had cause physical torture to girls and women, thereby leading to emotional pains.

The Oyo State female genital mutilation coordinator, Mrs Balqis Olawoyin said the practice was due to a cultural belief which was age-long thereby making it difficult to eradicate the practice totally especially in the grassroots areas.

Mrs Olawoyin who said the state government had employed the assistance of local surveillance officers to monitor those still carrying out the activities noted that a particular local government in Oyo state had the highest number of FGM cases according to report.

In a reaction, the national grand patron of circumcisers, Chief Abiola Ogundokun advised government to empower them by setting them up economically as this step of eradicating FGM will make them jobless.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Bashir Bello said FGM usually leaves a permanent scar on the victim, hence the need to stop it.

The program had in attendance traditional birth attendants, local circumcisors, mothers and religious organizations.

Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has reiterated her commitment to the prevention and reduction of infant and maternal mortality to the barest minimum in the state.

Mrs Makinde made the pledge while distributing gift items to the first, second and third new-year babies for 2021.

Mrs Makinde who was represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Professor Bolanle Olaniyan noted that children are God’s heritage hence the need to protect them.

Welcoming the New Year babies delivered to Mrs Zainab Imrah at Adeoyo Hospital, Yemisi Obi at Jericho Nursing Home, and Kehinde Oyewumi also at the Adeoyo Hospital, the governor’s wife implored the mothers to take proper care of them.

The beneficiaries thanked Mrs Makinde for the gifts.

The head of Jericho Nursing Home, Dr Olasunkanmi Adebisi appreciated Governor Seyi Makinde for his efforts and advised expectant mothers to take good care of themselves.

Women should maintain a healthy lifestyle by placing priority on their health to avoid untimely death.


Wife of Oyo state Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde stated this at a Christmas party organized for women in the state.


Mrs Makinde who was represented by the Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Joke Sanni said the task at the homefront and workplace could make women fall ill sometimes.


She implored women to always go for medical checkup to know their blood sugar level and screen for cervical and breast cancer.


In a reaction, the women who were dressed in colorful attires, promised to show love at this season and also appreciated the kind gesture of the wife of Oyo State.


The program featured presentation of food items and cash donations.

Effective communication between mother and child has been identified as a key factor to early detection of sexual and gender-based violence in children.

A public speaker, Mr Anthony Fasehun stated this in a lecture entitled “Responding to the crime of child defilement” at a 2-day seminar organised by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Oyo State Command.

Mr Fasheun said building a bond between parents and children would enhance cordial relationship that would encourage an open communication to avoid keeping sexual violence secret.

He noted that sound parenting education was key if there would be a stop to any form of violence towards children, especially the girl-child.

Mr Fasheun opined that monitoring the character and movement of children would build support and awareness among all stakeholders in order to ensure adequate protection.

Another speaker, Mrs Ibukun Otesile said the role of community in preventing children from sexual and gender violence could not be overemphasised.

She said people should shun the act of shielding sexual violence suspects but work collectively with relevant stakeholders to reduce the menace to the barest minimum.

Mrs Otesile added that the community should always encourage and support victims of child violence to the nearest hospital for prompt attention.

Some mothers at the conference expressed appreciation and promised readiness to support the law and protect their children against any form of violence.

Contributing, the guest of honour, wife of Oyo State governor, Mrs Omini Makinde who spoke through the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Diaspora, Mrs Bolanle Sarumi-Aliu, said mothers should deploy all means possible to protect their children and safeguard their tomorrow.

Mrs Makinde therefore called on government at all levels to partner the relevant stakeholders in collectively fight against Sexual and Gender Based Violence, SGDV.

Earlier, while declaring the conference open, NSCDC commandant in Oyo state, Mr Iskilu Akinsanya, said the conference became imperative in order to sensitive the public on what to do reduce the menace.

The two day capacity building programme with the theme “Responding to the crime of the child defilement” featured different activities including presentation of award to some distinguished officers of the NSCDC.

She acknowledged the potential in them and commended their care givers for the hard work they put in in taking of the children with special needs.

Mrs Makinde who charged the children with special needs to be impactful in life without minding the challenges confronting them, noted that they could make Nigeria better and greater.

In her opening remarks, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Joke Sanni said the theme of the 60th anniversary was indeed needful at a time such as this, as it was only in togetherness that Nigeria and Nigerians can survive.

Highlights of the program included dancing competition, drama presentation, choreography and distribution of foodstuffs, drugs, toiletries and cash to 25 children homes in Oyo state.

Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has promised to protect every woman’s rights without undermining the roles they play in the development of the state.

Mrs. Makinde made this assurance during a familiarization tour and thank you visit to women in all local government areas and LCDAs in Oke-Ogun.

Mrs Makinde promised total commitment to fighting for women’s rights through various empowerment programmes that would better their lives.

She noted that when women were adequately empowered they would be self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the development of the country and the state.

As part of efforts to cushion the present economic effect on widows, wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde has distributed palliatives to over 2000 widows in the state.  

The event, held at the State House, Ibadan, had beneficiaries drawn from the 33 local government areas of the state and different nongovernmental organizations (NGO).

In an address, Mrs Makinde noted that the programme was organized to commemorate this year’s widow’s day, which was marked on 23rd of June. 

She said the event could not take place at the said date due to the COVID- 19 pandemic. 

Mrs Makinde, who lamented the difficulties confronting widows and women, said the state was poised to protecting their rights and cater for their needs.

Two widows and a widower commended Mrs Makinde for the gesture.

Items distributed were rice, beans, cassava flakes, vegetable oil and cash donation.
