The government will continue to address factors militating against healthcare delivery in the country.

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo made the affirmation during the inauguration of projects by the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.

Professor Osinbajo explained that there were still gaps in the nation’s health delivery system, which he attributed to the quality of care available, equipment, and facilities as well as the disparity between the health budget and expenditure.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, (SDGs), Dr. Adejoke Oorelope Adefulire described the project inaugurated at UCH Ibadan as a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to the health and well-being of Nigerians.

Earlier, the Chief Medical Director, UCH, Professor Jesse Otegbayo in an address of welcome, described the inauguration of the project as a landmark in the over sixty-five years of the medical institution’s existence.

Professor Otegbayo who said the projects represented a significant contribution from the federal government, expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, (SDGs) Dr. Adejoke Oorelope Adefulire.

The UCH CMD, however, solicited the provision of more facilities and equipment from the Federal Government to further enhance the institution’s medical delivery.

Our correspondent reports that there were goodwill messages, from the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun, and the Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Teslim Folarin.

Suspected thieves reportedly broke into the newly inaugurated 100-bed Mother and Child Hospital in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State a month after commissioning.

Our correspondent reports that the hospital was commissioned on Saturday, February 1, 2023 by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

The thieves reportedly broke into the hospital and carted away electronic equipment worth millions of naira.

The state commandant of the Security Network, otherwise called the Amotekun Corps, David Akinremi, confirmed the incident.

Akinremi disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Abeokuta on Friday.

He said his operatives have arrested three suspects in connection with the crime.

He disclosed that the suspects stole six 43-inch Hisense T.V. sets, two 65-inch Bruhm T.V sets, three Bruhm fridges, one Midea refrigerator, and three Lontor rechargeable standing fans, all valued at N3 million.

Akinremi said the prime suspect, one Ogunjembola Kehinde, led his gang to burgle the hospital.

He said Ogunjembola was arrested following a complaint of burglary and stealing by one Kehinde Banjoko that some unknown persons broke into her residence while she was away in Lagos and stole several household items such as generating sets, gas cylinder, standing fan, mattresses and rug, among others, valued at about N500,000.

“Based on actionable intelligence, the prime suspect was arrested, and upon interrogation, he admitted that he committed the alleged crime with one other now at large. His admission led to the recovery of all the items stolen from one Lawal Aliu, who is the criminal receiver.

“While investigation into the original complaint was still ongoing, intelligence received further revealed that the same principal suspect in this case, Ogunjembola Kehinde and his criminal gang was responsible for breaking and stealing of some electronic equipment at the newly inaugurated 100 bed Mother and Child Hospital, Iperu.

“When he (suspect) was confronted with this, he also admitted he committed the offence with his co-accomplice in the original case of burglary and stealing reported by Banjoko Kehinde

“So far, three suspects have been arrested in connection with this case while efforts are ongoing aimed at apprehending other criminal receivers mentioned by the suspects with a view to recovering items allegedly sold to them,” Akinremi said.

In order to tackle existing problems and at the same time benefit from domestic and global trends, stakeholders both in the public and private sectors must take timely actions and immediate steps for Nigeria to achieve the desired national goals, according to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The President represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, stated this today in an address delivered virtually at the opening of the 27th Nigerian Economic Summit, themed “Securing our Future: The Fierce Urgency of Now”.

Emphasizing the imperative of the theme of the summit, the President said, “the theme for this year’s Summit – “Securing Our Future: The Fierce Urgency of Now” is a compelling one. It stresses the importance of taking timely action to tackle existing problems while at the same time urging that we take immediate steps to cope with or benefit from domestic and global trends in order to achieve our desired national goals and objectives.”

Continuing, he noted that “the need for urgent action is even more pressing if we take account of the fact that we are now part of the African Continental Free Trade Area which calls for actions to position the economy to benefit from the opportunity that this regional integration grouping presents while at the same time protecting our industries and businesses from unfair competition.”

The President took the opportunity to explain the new medium-term National Development Plan, saying, “growth figures are meaningless if they do not translate to good-paying jobs and improved standard of living for our people. The question, of course, I insist, that must be answered regarding all our policies, is what they mean for creation of wealth and human capacity development.

“The new plan incorporates aspects of the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy which was articulated as a guide towards achieving our poverty reduction target. The starting point for the implementation of the Strategy is the realization that increased employment is an indispensable tool for reducing poverty”.

According to President Buhari, “the Federal Government is responding to the challenges and opportunities of the moment by articulating forward-looking policies and strategies and implementing a coherent, clear and consistent set of actions in order to achieve our desired objectives.

“The broad objectives of the new medium-term National Development Plan Plan are to diversify the economy, invest in critical infrastructure, build human capital and improve governance and security. The intention is to achieve broad-based and inclusive GDP growth in order to create 21 million jobs and lift 35 million people out of poverty by 2025. This ambitious but realizable target is consistent with government’s vision of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in a decade.”

Explaining the rationale for government’s policy direction, the President said, “the shock caused by the pandemic (which is still very much with us) was at a time that Nigeria as a developing economy is striving to become a digital economy so that we can leapfrog into the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“As if this is not a challenge enough, we are also required as a good member of the international community to take steps to mitigate and to adapt to climate change. This is not a simple matter if we bear in mind that we are reliant on oil and gas for revenues and export earnings and yet reducing the use of fossil fuels is the frontline strategy being urged for achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

President Buhari then listed some of the interventions by government whose results he noted, “are beginning to show although we must admit that there is still much more work to be done especially in the context of our stated priorities to reduce poverty and unemployment which call for urgency.”

His words: “The Economic Sustainability Plan adopted in response to the economic crisis caused by the pandemic was centered on tackling and reducing the COVID-19 caseload, restoring growth, protecting and creating jobs, rescuing businesses, and reducing social vulnerabilities.

“These were in addition to the priority actions that were already being taken in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan to invest in social and human capital, build power, road and rail infrastructure and improve the business environment.”

In the MSMEs space, the President said “we were also able through the MSME Survival Fund to support up to 1.1m establishments and individuals. Particularly notable in this regard was the payroll support scheme wherein Government was able to pay salaries to nearly 500,000 employees of MSMEs over a three-month period so that they could remain at work.”

In addition to the Survival Fund scheme, President Buhari explained further that “given the critical foreign exchange needs of the economy, we are also providing support to exporters through the Export Expansion Facility Programme and disbursement is ongoing to beneficiaries of the scheme.”

He further listed the “labour intensive interventions in agriculture, housing and solar power installations which are still on-going will also boost domestic demand, especially for local products”, as some of the interventions expected to create employment.

Speaking about the Solar Power Naija Project, the President explained that “it is another project of the Economic Sustainability Plan that will lead to the creation of a large number of jobs. We expect up to 250,000 jobs to be created from this effort to connect up to 5 million households to solar power.

“This project is particularly important in the context of climate change and in enabling Nigeria to generate renewable electric power against the background of its nationally determined contribution towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

Calling for more public-private partnerships in the transport sector, the President said the efforts of the Federal Government are evident and yielding results.

Said President Buhari: “we can all bear witness to the giant strides that are being made in infrastructure across the country. Rail services are already up and running from Abuja to Kaduna; Warri to Itakpe; and Lagos to Ibadan being the most notable.

“Similar investment is going on in major roads and bridges like the Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kano, Second Niger Bridge, and East-West Road amongst others. The Road Infrastructure Tax Credit scheme holds great potential as the work done on the Apapa-Oworonshoki Road has demonstrated.”

The President also identified digital economy “as another area with great potential and we are working on several initiatives to boost Business Process Outsourcing which can generate a large number of jobs while also contributing to substantial export earnings.”

On her part, Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed, commended the partnership with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group over the years and noted the group’s contributions in the development of government’s policies that have and is positively impacting the economy.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Mr Asue Ighodalo made a call on all stakeholders to support the Buhari administration in securing the future of Nigeria.

According to him, “Although the challenges confronting us are many, we should not despair. We are not inferior people, let’s get to work urgently, together, we can get our country working.”

Also in his remark, a former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe commended the leadership provided by Nigeria in improving the lives of the people through effective policy implementation and inclusive governance.

He noted that efforts made by the Nigerian government in securing the lives of the people and improving the economy will go a long way in securing the future of Africa and called on governments across the continent to put the people at the centre of policy choices and implementation.

Other dignitaries at the opening session of the summit include State governors, ministers, heads of government agencies, and captains of industry among others.

Politics

The way to transform society is largely dependent on the actions and decisions of those who occupy public offices.

According to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, this is why young people in Nigeria must get involved in politics.

Professor Osinbajo said at a virtual forum where he interacted with Nigerian Fellows of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.

The interaction included a Q & A session where questions were posed to the Vice President ranging from education, health, and youth engagement issues.

According to the VP, “you need to go the extra length if you are not already involved, get involved in politics—while a lot can be achieved in civil society, government still holds the ace in terms of capacity and resources to bring social goods to the largest numbers.

“Besides, being deciders instead of pressure group at the table in policy formulation are hugely different positions. The consummation of our great ideas to transform our societies ultimately will depend on “those politicians” as we sometimes derisively describe them.”

Continuing, the VP noted that “African nations and especially our country, cannot afford to have its best minds and most committed social activists remain only in the civil space. No, we simply can’t afford it, you have to get involved in politics. You have to be in the position to make the difference on the scale that is required.”

“Of course, there are many who will not be involved in politics but those that are inclined should, and there will be many challenges even in the winning or getting heard in politics. But I want to say to you that it should be an objective that you should set for yourselves, to get involved at whatever level of politics so that you can make the difference on the scale that is required,” Prof. Osinbajo added.

Speaking further about the potentials of young Nigerians to effect the desired change in their communities, the Vice President described the efforts of young African innovators as “Africa’s most exciting story – the story of a present and future that could be steered by our continent’s incredibly talented and optimistic young men and women.”

Commending the innovation and creativity of the fellows, Prof. Osinbajo said “within any generation, only a few wholeheartedly take on that challenge – the challenge of building a society. Most believe that the task is for someone else and that such endeavors cannot pay the bills.”

Recalling his days in civil society engagements and later in politics as Lagos State Attorney-General, the Vice President noted that “it took public office for me to be able to get the scale of change that is required to make a difference.”

His words, “without public office I would have remained a pressure group activist, I would have done some nice things, but I wouldn’t have been able to make the changes that my country required”.

“I was once where you were. I was part of several civil society groups at the time. I joined the first civil society group when I was 24, I was teaching at the time. I also co-founded the anti-corruption group, Integrity, and then Convention on Business Integrity (which is still existing today and they function out of Abuja and Lagos)”.

“I was chair of the Legal Research and Development Centre, where we worked on civil rights issues and legal defense for the poor. We did a couple of legal defence initiatives, we got funding from donors and tried to do the best we could.”

He added: “If I count the numbers that we did all the years it will be around maybe a hundred or so. We achieved some good, but compared to the scale of the problem, it was really a little”.

“But in 1999 came politics, and I was appointed Attorney General of Lagos. With that platform, we took on corruption in the Lagos judiciary and set a model. We reviewed the issues of corruption in the Lagos Judiciary and how to address it. From remuneration to discipline and we were able to put in place an anti-corruption framework that has lasted several years”.

“The reason why I make this point is that other states after what we did in Lagos copied that very example. So, many states improved remuneration and a wide variety of things.”

Prof. Osinbajo stated further that “the second thing we did in Lagos at the time is that we established the Citizens Rights Department. For the first time in the history of our country, a department was established in the Ministry of Justice for the rights of citizens”.

“That was important because the Ministry of Justice is not just a ministry of law and order, it is a Ministry of Justice for the people. And that department had what was called the Office of the Public Defender, and that was a concept we borrowed from some US States and we were able to do legal defence, government provided the funding, for thousands of Lagosians”.

“But the more interesting part of that story is that almost every state in Nigeria adopted the Citizens’ Rights Department, adopted the Office of the Public Defender. Now, go back to when I was an activist working in the Legal Research and Development Centre, where we tried to do some work on legal defence. We did a few but certainly couldn’t achieve the scale that we achieved when we were in public service.”

Responding to concerns about the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test, the VP said relevant government ministries and agencies would work on making things easier for Nigerians.

He said, “as an English-speaking country, we should be beneficiaries of some concession as opposed to being forced every two years to take the same test especially if you have passed it once before.”

The Fellowship is the flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Since 2014, nearly 5,100 young leaders from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa have participated in the Fellowship.

Besides the Fellows of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, other participants at the meeting were the United States of America’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Mary Beth Leonard and the Special Adviser to the President on Social Investments, Mrs Maryam Uwais, among others.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says beyond its proud history and traditions, Kano is a melting pot of diverse tribes and cultures and a place that is home to all and for all Nigerians, where they can co-exist peacefully regardless of differences.

Professor Osinbajo stated this today in Kano, during the coronation of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano, where he represented President Muhammadu Buhari.

The event which drew dignitaries from far and wide featured, besides the administration of the oath, and the formal presentation of the Staff of Office to the Emir, traditional rites, prayers, recitals and speeches.

The Vice President, who conveyed the president’s warm felicitations and personal good wishes to the state government and people of Kano, described the coronation as ‘historic’, while noting that Kano is revered as a major commercial and economic centre in sub-Saharan Africa.

“It is only the tolerance of the culture of Kano, where opposite ideas can co-exist peacefully, that you could have a thriving free market economy, with several millionaires and yet also be the base of radical left of centre political ideas. This is after-all the city of the socialist man of the masses, Mallam Aminu Kano and many of his disciples. Kano is also the home of the richest man in Africa, Alhaji Aliko Dangote,” he said.

He added that, “we are all proud of this city; proud of its legacy of tolerance and warmth and very proud that it indeed remains home to all and for all Nigerians, regardless of tribe and ethnicity, and the melting pot of diverse tribes and cultures assimilated into a robust, vibrant and cohesive whole.”

Congratulating the Emir of Kano on his coronation, the VP said, “Your Royal Highness, it is this great city over which God has given you the good fortune of being Monarch, a privilege which you know comes with the obligation of preserving these rich traditions of brotherhood of all tribes and tongues.”

“You inherit not only one of the most revered thrones in Africa, but on a more personal level your great father was known for his wisdom, courage and integrity. He loved his people and served them with honor and complete commitment. You have a goodly heritage but a particularly difficult act to follow. But we are confident that by the grace of God you will exceed the reputation of your illustrious forebears”.

“So today, as you ascend the throne of your fathers, carrying with you the love and trust of your people. I can only offer you a prayer: I pray that this land will prosper in your reign, I pray that the Almighty God will be merciful to you and to the people of this land, and that his hand will be upon you to guide and direct you daily. Your family and tribe will increase, change of guards that only a few will experience in their lifetimes.

Professor Osinbajo added that “the and handing over of the Staff of Office to the new Emir of Kano is in fulfillment of the extant law and practice of the installation of Emirs.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan; Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari; several governors, including the Governors of Katsina, Aminu Bello Masari; Kebbi, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; Bauchi, Bala Mohammed; Jigawa, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Kogi, Yahaya Bello; Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Sokoto, Aminu Tambuwal; Zamfara, Bello Matawalle.

Also present were the Ministers of Aviation, Hadi Sirika; Defence, Major General Bashir Salihi Magashi (Retired.); and Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono; as well as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Abubakar III, and other traditional rulers.

Lending his support to the global campaign against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, Friday evening attended the premiere of a movie titled “The Silent Baron”, a film produced by Mr Ifeanyi Ukaeru, in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to highlight the dangers of the abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.

Professor Osinbajo was accompanied by the Executive Chairman of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (rtd); the Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, NCAC, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, and other top government officials.

The movie premiere is part of activities marking the 2021 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking which falls on the 26th of June, every year. It is produced by Ekwe Nche Entertainment Ltd, the NDLEA, among other partners.

The movie features some internal challenges of agencies fighting drug barons and highlights how the couriers are recruited including by fooling ladies and their parents with false promises of taking the ladies abroad.

Starring some top Nollywood actors, the movie features the duplicitous life of a young man named Anselm, disguised as a foreign based professional who only visits Nigeria on short vacations.

He lures young ladies with gifts, alluring words and under false pretences as couriers for his illicit drug trafficking business.

In the end he was caught.

The movie brings to limelight, the commendable role of the NDLEA in the fight against drug trafficking especially at a time when the agency is aggressively exposing the menace with a significant number of arrests in the last couple months.

After watching the movie, a very delighted Vice President met some of the actors who were also present at the premiere, interacted briefly and took group photographs with the actors, movie producers and the production crew before departing from the event.

One factor responsible for the impactful implementation of the Social Investment Programmes of the Buhari administration over the years is the realization that you can’t reach Nigerians if you don’t have a plan for the grassroots, according to Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

This realization then influenced the structure designed for the SIP and is largely responsible for the successes of the programme (which is now regarded as one of the biggest social welfare schemes in the continent).

Professor Osinbajo stated this Sunday in Lagos at the inauguration of the Dash Me Store, an outfit of the Dash Me Foundation founded by the immediate past Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun.

The store is established to mobilize resources for onward distribution to vulnerable people in the society via grassroot charities.

According to the Vice President, “I am excited to be here for several reasons, but most of all because of Mrs Adeosun’s commitment to the notion that all service to man is actually service to God, and she took that very seriously.”

Professor Osinbajo noted that “this is why, as Minister, she prioritized the Social Investment Programmes, when for the first time, the country voted almost N500B of our annual budget to welfare programmes which are called the Social Investment Programmes, which involved engaging 500,000 young men and women, and also giving microcredit to about 2 million traders and also a home-grown school feeding programme for 9.5 million children daily in public schools across the country.

“I am therefore really not surprised that she has decided to use some of her enormous talent and influence to establish an organization that raises funds and provides resources for indigenous grassroot charities working with orphaned and vulnerable children, disadvantaged youth, and victims of domestic violence.”

Speaking on the establishment of Nigeria’s first thrift-for-charity online store, Prof. Osinbajo said adding social enterprise to philanthropy with a structure that allows for resource mobilization for charity as well as creates the opportunity for people to earn a living in the process, should be the way to go.

His words: “what I think is happening here is that philanthropy is not like it used to be when all you needed was a good and kind heart and you didn’t need to plan or organize as you would a business for-profit.

“What Kemi and her team have done is to bring the new notion of social enterprise to this project. Philanthropy run with the discipline, attention to detail, and financial prudence of a successful business, and she can do all of that, and I am sure her team is imbibing that, given her background in finance in both private and public sector.”

Continuing, he said “the idea of this thrift-for-charity store is brilliant and the first of its kind in Nigeria. It is a unique model which does not just give to the needy in the conventional way of merely handing out donations.

“It is an innovative and structured way of aggregating donations to earn income to transform the lives of the vulnerable and needy while creating jobs in the process.

“I must say that your focus on funding grassroots charities is so crucial and I know that, having campaigned with you on behalf of our party, the APC all around Ogun and in every part of Nigeria, it is clear that you can’t reach Nigeria and Nigerians if you don’t have a plan for the grassroots.”

Earlier in her remarks, Mrs Adesoun said the idea of the store is to aggregate donations of different kinds for charitable causes, noting that Nigerians from different fields of endeavour and from across the country would be enabled via the online store to contribute to supporting the needy in the society.

She said the organization would work closely with charitable organisations in the grassroots to ensure that funds and other materials donated via the Dash Me Store get to actual beneficiaries.

Conveys President Buhari’s congratulatory message to outgoing PFN President.

VP thankful for solidarity visits that “encouraged me”, honoured with award.

At a defining moment in the history of the country, the church must stand as the light of the nation, and Christians as the purveyors of justice and voices of peace, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Professor Osinbajo gave the admonition on Wednesday at the 16th Biennial Delegate Conference of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, held at the Michael Okpara Square in Enugu, Enugu State.

Speaking on the theme of the conference “The Unquenchable Light”, Professor Osinbajo said “we must bear this gospel of Jesus Christ knowing that it is the beacon of hope and succour for our nation. As bearers of the gospel we are the reconcilers-in-chief.”

According to the Vice President, “we are the salt to the wounds of a nation, we are the voices of peace and unity where division and strife have arisen. We are the purveyors of justice, for all of those who are disempowered. The good news is that this light is unquenchable.”

Explaining the point, the Vice President said “what is this light? It is the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came to this world to pay the price for our sins so that we can attain eternal life in peace and joy. This gospel is the power of God for the healing and transformation of men and nations.”

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. It is the Wisdom of God,” Professor Osinbajo added quoting the Scriptures.

The Vice President had earlier conveyed the felicitations of President Muhammadu Buhari to the outgoing PFN President, Reverend Felix Omobude on the successful and glorious completion of his tenure in office and congratulated the incoming President, Bishop Francis Wale Oke.

Professor Osinbajo also thanked the out-going President, Reverend Omobude for his invaluable service to the PFN especially in the manner he handled the affairs of the body “with impeccable integrity, fatherly understanding, maturity and Godly insight.”

On the stewardship of the outgoing PFN leadership, Professor Osinbajo said “under your able leadership and in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria led by our brother, Reverend Dr. Supo Ayokunle, I received several solidarity visits. I am eternally indebted to you for those visits which greatly strengthened and encouraged me.”

Commending the smooth transition in the leadership of the PFN, Professor Osinbajo said “I must commend the smooth electoral process leading to the emergence of the President and his deputy unopposed.”

“This is as it should be. The PFN certainly has a lot to teach us, politicians. We pray that the Lord will give this executive good success in Jesus name,” he said.

In acknowledgment of his stand and support for the Christian faith and exemplary service to humanity, the PFN conferred on the Vice President a special award of the Defender of Faith.

Accepting the award, the Vice President thanked the PFN for the recognition, noting that “there can be no more coveted preferment than that conferred by one’s brethren,” and adding in prayer that “you all will receive not just honour from men here on earth but in the end also from the Lord God Almighty, in Jesus name.”

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State also received the PFN award of the Defender of Faith at the event.

Aside from Bishop Wale Oke, who was elected as PFN President, Archbishop John Praise Daniel, the Presiding Archbishop of the Dominion Chapel International Churches was also elected Vice President.

The Vice President who had attended the Federal Executive Council meeting before traveling to Enugu yesterday, returned to Abuja last night.
