Fasting is the abstinence from food or drink or both for health, religious, or ethical purposes. The abstinence may be complete or partial, lengthy, short or even intermittent.
Fasting has been promoted and practiced worldwide by physicians, founders and followers of many religions.
One of the greatest joys for someone who fasts is when the time for breaking of fast, arrives.
During fasting, human body loses liquids, which is why one needs healthy drink after or during breaking of a fast to avoid dehydration, which could cause undesirable side effects such as constipation, headache, dizziness, tiredness and dry skin.

Hence, it is now our responsibility to provide our body with its right to nutritious food and restore its energy.
60 –70% of your body is made of water and any reduction in your water intake can affect your body cells and nerves from functioning properly.

Online Editor, Adebukola Aluko in this question and answer session with a physician, Dr. Olaide Oladipupo, throws more light on healthy food intake during fasting.

Q: What does fasting do to the overall health and wellness of individuals?

A:Fasting is not of bad consequence to overall health awareness of individual, particularly if it is not the type of fasting that is too prolonged. Fasting could actually be an advantage because you can use it to control weight,

Q:What percentage of energy does the body loose during fasting?

A:The percentage of energy the body looses during fasting depends on the duration of fast and also the activities done at that time, so it is difficult to say this is the percentage of energy loss, in actual fact, fasting can be used to control weight.
During fasting, some people can actually gain more weight if care is not taken and it may not have much effect in times of weight gained or weight loss on some individuals. Don’t forget that what is even more evident during fasting is dehydration. Imagine somebody that is fasting and still walking inside the sun, such person will be unnecessarily dehydrated if he or she does not take fluid.

Q: What type of food is essential to break a fast, how should the faithful break fast considering the fact that liquids and solids are available?

A:When you want to break a fast, it is advisable to take a lot of fluids, vegetables and fruits because you have been deprived of fluids. You also need food that will supply calorie, protein and natural fat.
Again, when you are trying to break your fast, you do not need heavy food, simply take food moderately and avoid fried foods, take food rich in carbohydrates, protein, water, minerals, fruits and vegetables,

Q: What are the effects of fizzy drinks or cold water on the body
A: Fizzy drinks are not acceptable generally, whether during a fast or not, But frankly speaking, there is nothing bad in taking cold water. There is a general belief that you are not supposed to take cold water. Basically, there is no difference whether you take cold water or water with room temperature, however, it is not good to take hot water as the most important thing to consider in fasting is dehydration as well as deprivation of fluid.

The issue of dehydration is more pronounced during fasting particularly depending on the hours of fasting and the nature of weather during fasting.

Q:What level of activities can people get involved in during fasting?
A:Some fasting goes beyond some certain hours, unlike in Nigeria now, Muslim fast will be around 14 hours. In some countries like Canada, fasts last for about 18 hours. But don’t forget the temperature over there is more friendly. Any fast that is so prolonged, lasting close to 24 hours or more is detrimental to ones health.

Also don’t forget there is auto regulatory system in the body. When you are deprived of fluid, the quantity of urine that you produce will be less, but you may not have much control on the fluid loss through breathing or sweating when you are exposed to hot environment. That is why anybody that is fasting is advised to avoid exposing himself to exhaustion or sun that can dehydrate him.

In summary, fasting if properly monitored, could actually be of good effect on the body.
Recommendation
Drink at least eight glasses of water every day. If you are exercising and you are outdoors in hot weather, you lose more fluids. So make sure you drink more water.

Avoid hot and spicy dishes as it increases thirst

Do not add too much salt to salads and other dishes.

Eat fresh fruits and vegetables because they are rich in water and fibre. They stay in the intestines for a long time and reduce thirst,

Drink fresh fruit juices rather than sweetened juices

Drinking iced water to break your fast does not replenish your thirst but can cause your blood vessels to contract and cause indigestion. For this reason, it is recommended you drink water at room temperature or slightly cold.
Eat right today,” remember you are what you eat”

A member of the House of Representatives representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency, Oyo State, Shina Peller has called on the Muslim faithful to leverage the holy month of Ramadan to pray for Nigeria.

Peller made the call via his social media platforms whilst he was congratulating Muslims on the commencement of Ramadan.

He also observed that the Ramadan period was an opportunity for Muslims to purify their mind, body and soul.

Similarly, the federal legislator argued that most of the challenges that Nigeria was confronted with are attributed to system failure.

He added that in addressing this, it was the duty of every patriotic Nigerian to take part in the rebuilding process of Nigeria, which he said required creating a new functional system that would make the existing one obsolete.

He wrote: “I wish every one of us a blessed Ramadan as fasting begins. Importantly, we must remember that Ramadan presents to us an opportunity to purify our mind, body and soul as well as an opportunity to pray for our dear country, Nigeria.”

“Our country is suffering from system failure but God didn’t create Nigeria to fail, our country is blessed with so many natural and human capital resources, so we have no reason to fail. What is required for us at this Holy Month of Ramadan is to pray to God to guide us aright especially in electing the right leaders as the 2023 general election beckons.”

“As a patriotic citizen, I can’t pretend that all is well with our country presently, truly within the last 3 decades Nigeria has been confronted with so many challenges which are all attributed to symptoms of a system failure, and this is what we all have to address. Our founding fathers didn’t build Nigeria for Nigerians alone, but Nigeria for the whole of Africa! With all the resources that God has blessed us with, what genuine excuse do we have not to make Nigeria work? What excuse do we have not to function as a giant of Africa that we are meant to be?”

“Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not trying to blame anyone in particular for the system failure. In fact, this is not the time for blame game, it is the time to come together as Nigerians and pray purposefully for our country; it is the time to do the needful by participating in the rebuilding process of our dear country. In doing so, we need to create a new functional system that will make the existing one obsolete, and this is a task that we all must be willing to carry out. Once again, let’s seize the opportunity of the Holy Month to pray for Nigeria. Ramadan Mubarak!”.

The National Leader of All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called on those clamouring for secession to jettison the idea, as the country is better together than separated.

Tinubu spoke in his goodwill message at the Special Ramadan Prayer Tafsir Lecture, held at the Lagos House, Marina, on Sunday.

He further said the country is yet to recover from the effects of the civil war, adding that the country cannot afford to experience another war.

“For clamouring for war, God will not allow Nigeria to experience war. If we say Nigeria should separate, people should remember what war caused in Sudan and Iraq. Such war does not end on time. We are yet to recover from the civil war.

“We are better together. I have nowhere I am going. Whoever has experienced war in the past, will not pray for such. Nigeria will not separate, it’s not acceptable to us. Our prayer is for prosperity and more wealth for the country,” he said.

Tinubu also praised the governor of the state, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for their achievements in the state.

“For those clamouring to divide the country, maybe you should have a rethink. Ask yourself; where will this clamour for so-called independence lead us? We should reinvent this country. Nigeria will be great.”

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by Muslims globally.
Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam while others among which are faith (shahada), prayer (salat), alms giving (zakat), fasting (sawm) and pilgrimage (Hajj).
Ramadan is the most significant month in the Islamic calendar and it is the month when the Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Mohammed in which Muslims are expected to fast for 29 to 30 days, depending on the sighting of the moon, in line with Islamic tradition.
During the period, Muslims also try to reconnect with their faith through prayers, reading of Quran and charitable giving, as well as rekindling relationships with friends and family.
Fasting is obligatory for Muslims except for people who are insane, minors, travelers, menstruating women, expectant and nursing mothers as well as old people.
Pregnant and breast-feeding women are expected to make up the missed days after Ramadan.
Last year, there was a total lockdown on religious activities to prevent the sprerad of ravaging corona virus pandemic.
Though there has been ease on religious activities Muslims should still continue to observe necessary protocols during this year, Ramadan as covid-19 is yet to be defeated.
Congregational prayers should continue unabated, observers should ensure that they give space from one another as some mosque management have indicated the praying point for earth Muslim to prevent congestion.
Public gatherings like Ramadan lectures should br avoided except when there are provision to control crowd and ensure physical distance while usage of nose masks should be made compulsory either at mosques or venue of such Ramadan lecture in line with covid-19 protocols.
Crowded gathering associated with if tar banquets which is breaking of fast, should be avoided and consider using individual pre-packaged boxes/servings of food. these can be organized by centralized entities and institutions, which should adhere to physical distancing throughout the whole period.
In alternative to social and public gatherings, which are discouraged, virtual platforms such as television, radio, digital, and social media could be employed to pass messages across to the Muslims during the holy month.
It is important to note that healthy diet and proper nutrition and hydration are vital during the month of Ramadan. People should eat a variety of fresh and unprocessed foods every day and drink plenty of water.
Ramadan is also the month in which Allah opens his doors of mercy, forgiveness and blessings.
So, Muslims should pray fervently to Allah to intervene and eliminate the covid-19 pandemic ravaging the world and intensify efforts in good deeds during the month.
As it is believed that Allah answer prayers with speed during this period as gates of paradise are often open while those for hell are closed, Muslim faithful should take upon themselves to always pray with passion.

Economy

As Muslim faithful prepares for the commencement of Ramadan, prices of consumable commodities have increased in Ibadan.

A survey by our correspondent revealed that the price of food stuff such as rice, beans, yam, maize and vegetable oil have increased.

A visit by Radio Nigeria to Bodija, Oja oba and Oje, revealed that a bag of rice most consumed by people which before is sold at twenty four thousand Naira is now sold at the rate of twenty eight thousand naira.

Two traders who did want their names mentioned attributed the increasing cost of foodstuff to high transport fare.

Speaking in the same vein, traders who specialized in the sale of vegetable crops such as pepper, tomato, onions and melons said increase in the prices were due to factors such as increased value added tax, reduction in the productive capacity of farmers and security crises.

Some customers and traders appealed to government to formulate and implement programmes that would cushion the effects of inflation in the country.
