…to set up committee on amicable resolution of leadership crisis

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Thursday met with leaders of market men and women in the state, declaring that he was ready to put in place policies to boost economic growth.

The governor, who stated this at an event held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, added that he would continue to pursue programmes and policies that will make life comfortable for everyone.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the governor as saying that he would go ahead to set up a committee to explore options on the amicable resolution of the recent crisis surrounding the leadership positions of the markets.

Governor Makinde, who expressed his desire for unity among market men and women in the state, said that  his administration would sit with all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the existing misunderstanding.

He equally acknowledged the role played by market leaders during his campaign for the governorship in 2015 and 2019, urging them to learn a lesson from his life and submit to the will of God on market leadership.

He, however, noted that he had already told the Olubadan of Ibadanland that he would not query Kabiyesi’s decision on the leadership of the market, stating, however, that his government would look into requests made by the market leaders and ensure that the right thing is done.

He said: “I acknowledge all you did during the electioneering period. We worked tirelessly together in 2014 and 2015 and, now, the will of God has prevailed. I want to tell us that we need to do things according to the will of God. Obviously, we will see to your requests and make sure the right thing is done.

“I once told Kabiyesi at his palace that I believe everybody is for me. I also told Kabiyesi that anybody who has been chosen to be in a position of leadership in the market will not be queried by me.

“I believe no matter how complex the matter is, we can still sit down and deliberate upon it to find a lasting solution. So, I want a united house because if we do, that is when what should come to us can come.”

The governor promised to set up a committee to look into the matter, expressing the belief that the issue will be resolved in no time.

“I will set up a committee immediately and I believe this issue will be resolved. But I want to urge you to learn from my personal political experience. I contested to go to the Senate twice but I was denied. In 2019, I prayed that the will of God be done on my gubernatorial ambition and it indeed came to pass.

“So, let every one of us always allow the will of God to prevail on the things we do.

“Yes, this is your government. We will also do the things that are needful as a government to boost your businesses and make life comfortable for everyone,” he added.

While speaking on behalf of the market men and women from all the nooks and crannies of the state, the South-West Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Traders, Mrs. Odunayo Danjuma and the Acting

Iyaloja of Oyo State, Chief (Mrs.) Justina Ogundoyin, appreciated Governor Makinde for providing loans to traders and artisans in the state.

They added that the association will continue to contribute their quota to the development of the state.

Mrs. Danjuma appealed to the governor to help in resolving the lingering leadership crisis among the market women and men in the state, with a view to it having an acceptable leadership in the state.

Oyo State Government, Engineer Seyi Makinde has declared that there was no sign of lopsidedness in the composition of Governing Councils of State-owned tertiary institutions.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa indicates that there was no truth whatsoever in the claims credited to a Muslim leader and Director of the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, Professor Isiaq Akintola that the appointments came with religious bias against the Muslims.

According to the statement, an analysis of the appointments released by the government of Oyo State on Tuesday indicated that out of a total of 41 appointees named into the Governing Councils of the different state-owned institutions, there were 22 Muslims, while the list had 19 Christians.

The statement says it is illogical for anyone to imagine that in a state like Oyo, a government would play up religious differences and make nominations into critical institutions without sound judgment.

It notes that the list of appointees show that for Ibarapa Polytechnic, out of the six appointees, there were three Muslims and three Christians and same for Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo.

It also explains that Oke-Ogun Polytechnic which had three Muslims and Christians apiece while College of Education, Lanlate had three Christians and two Muslims.

“There were three Christians as against seven Muslims on the board of the College of Agriculture, Igbo-Ora, while the Polytechnic Ibadan had four Muslims and four Christians on its board.”

“We need to state it clearly that religious leaders must get their facts correct before coming into the open to make statements.”

The statement advises purveyors of such unhelpful fiction to focus on other agenda that can assist the developmental agenda of the state.

News Analysis

The news of the death of former governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi which filtered in on Thursday afternoon, leaving the people with shock was the climax of rumours about his health status that had been trending for some days.

Many had been praying that Senator Ajimobi would survive the hospitalisation on account of Covid-19 complications and come out alive but this was not to be.

The former governor who was born at Oja Iba in Ibadan, Oyo State on December 16, 1949 had a privileged background.

His grandfather was the Sobaloju of Ibadan land, his father, Pa Ajimobi was also a member of the House of Assembly in the old Western Region, while his uncle, Honourable N.A Ajimobi was Minister of Works and Transport in the Western Region.

Senator Ajimobi started his primary education at Ibadan City Council Primary School, Aperin, his secondary education was at Lagelu Grammar School.

He was active in athletics, table tennis and football including serving as the games prefect during his secondary school days and this earned him the nickname “Archipelago”.

Late Ajimobi studied Business Administration and Finance at the State University of New York in Buffalo, New York, United States of America, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree.

He had his MBA in Operations Research and Marketing with concentration in finance at Governors State University, University Park, Illinois.

Senator Ajimobi married Florence Ajimobi in 1980 and the marriage was blessed with five children.

In 2007, Senator Ajimobi contested the gubernatorial seat of Oyo State under the umbrella of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, but lost.

Undaunted, he gave it another shot in 2011 under the banner of Action Congress of Nigeria and won.

In April, 2015 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, he made history as the first governor to win a re-election and in succession, defeating two of his predecessors in office, Chief Christopher Alao-Akala and Alhaji Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

Senator Ajimobi lost his bid to return to the senate on the platform of the APC to the incumbent Senator Kola Balogun of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, who clinched the seat of the Oyo South Senatorial District in the 2019 General Elections.

Shortly before his death, the late senator who was the Deputy National Chairman ,South, was named and endorsed as the Caretaker National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress Party following the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole by the Court of Appeal.

The Oyo State former helmsman who bestrode the political terrain with elegance meant different things to different people.

To admirers, he was the architect of modern Oyo State while others are quick to point to his blunt nature and unbridled utterances which set him on war path with some as a minus.

President Muhammadu Buhari described the late governor as steadfast and consistent with progressive view, someone who worked assiduously for the creation of APC.

The president noted that Ajimobi died at a crucial time when the party and the country needed his counsels to heal and grow.

On his part, All Progressives Congress Chieftain, Senator Bola Tinubu said the party had lost an outstanding statesman, a dedicated friend, brother and ally.

To the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, Dr Kayode Fayemi the death of Senator Ajimobi was a personal loss and a huge loss to the people of Oyo state in particular and Nigeria in general.

The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare who described Ajimobi as his elder brother noted that his death came too early.

Ajimobi’s successor and incumbent governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde said Ajimobi would be missed for leaving a blueprint for some of the activities that his administration was undertaking.

As the sun sets on the life and times of Senator Ajimobi on Thursday, 25th June, 2020, one thing is certain; his memory will continue to linger in the minds of all and sundry.

Religion

Religious leaders in Oyo State have expressed divergent opinions over lifting of suspension placed on religious gathering 3 months ago during the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria, Chairman, Muslim Community of Oyo State, Alhaji Kunle Sanni said he was not in support of reopening of mosques in the state due to the rising cases of COVID-19.

“As far as I’m concerned, the governor has not convinced us that the spike of the pandemic has subsided and therefore it would be extremely risky to tell the people to come to mosque and get infected”.

He said the Muslim Community of Oyo State would soon take a stand on the state government’s decision, as he was personally not in support of reopening of mosques noting that the rate at which the virus was spreading in the state was alarming.

“In a few days’ time, the meeting of critical stakeholders will address the situation and come out with the position of Oyo State Muslim community”.

Alhaji Sanni wondered why the state government did not carry the community along compared to the past stressing that Chief Imam of Ibadanland was also not contacted as some members of the community had resolved not to open their mosques including Ibadan Central Mosque, Ojaba.

“Government should have called for the meeting of religious bodies as done in the past to seek their opinion before taking the decision of opening religious centres. From the feelers we got even the Chief Imam of Ibadanland was not consulted and the Ibadan Central Mosque, Ojaba will not be opened for Jumat service. The same thing for some prominent Islamic organisations like Ansarudeen that its national headquarters has directed that their mosques all over the country should be under lock”.

“Also, as Muslims, we have a leader, The Sultan is our leader in Nigeria. The federal government had said mosques can open but the national mosque in Abuja is under lock as it was not open for Jumat last week, which means the Sultan who is our spiritual leader has not directed us to open mosques”.

He noted that the idea of allowing 25 percent worshippers in the mosque was not feasible as such would bring about discrimination and misunderstanding.

“Part of the protocols according to the state government is that only 25 percent should come to mosques, how do we discriminate between one person or the other from entering the mosque on Friday?  You will come to the mosque and we will say you cannot enter, then you will see other Muslims entering, it will create a lot of confusion and anarchy if I can put it that way”.

Alhaji Sanni noted that praying at home during pandemic was Islamic as this would prevent either contracting or spreading the coronavirus.

“As Muslims, we believe that you don’t have to go to mosques before you can pray and that is why during the period of Prophet Muhammad, Peace be onto Him and there was a pandemic, the prophet instructed that people should pray in their homes. Every space on surface of the earth is a mosque, you can pray there”.

In a contrary opinion, Chairman, Christian Council of Nigeria Oyo state, Reverend Stephen Adekunle said the churches were pleased with the reopening stressing that there had been meetings of leaders under the State Chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to finetune on making churches model by putting measures in place to prevent spread of COVID-19.

“Churches are ready to become standards as they used to be. As we resume by opening churches, social distancing and other regulations should be strictly adhered to and people should face the reality of the challenges of COVID-19”.

Reverend Adekunle who is also the President, Ibadan Baptist Conference said the closure of worship centres had opened the minds of church leaders to look inward to explore other ways of preaching the words of God.

“During the closing of churches in the first place, we had not closed down the daily programmes like reading of the scriptures and other activities. However, it has opened our eyes and our minds to other ways by which we can disseminate the gospel”.

He said the leadership of CAN had been meeting the state government on the development urging Christians to be law abiding and avoid acts that can lead to the spread of coronavirus.

“We have been meeting with the government. The CAN executives have been meeting with the government for sometimes and the head of churches had met at CAN Secretariat to discuss on modalities of opening of churches”.

Reverend Adekunle called on the state government to support churches to manage the challenges of COVID-19.

“People should pray to God that we will adjust to the aftermath of COVID-19. I want to challenge the government to help us to manage COVID-19 by supporting Christendom in order to make progress and we will be praying for the government”.

Governor Seyi Makinde had early this week approved the resumption of religious activities in the state, with the directive that mosques and churches should operate at twenty- five percent capacity.

According to the data from Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) Oyo state is number four on the table after Lagos, Abuja and Kano with 764 positive cases.
