The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has urged students to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of any website or service claiming to represent the organisation.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by NELFUND’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Nasir Ayitogo.

NELFUND management has become aware of a fraudulent advertisement about a ‘Federal Study Loan’. “Fraudsters operating the website www.fedstudyloan-gov.ng have advertised an application for the highly anticipated student loan programme of the Federal Government.

NELFUND wishes to clarify that it has no association with this website and strongly condemns any attempts to deceive students seeking financial aid.

“NELFUND takes the security and well-being of our students very seriously and is committed to providing accurate information and resources for financing their education,” he said.

Ayitogo urged anyone affected by the scam to report it immediately to the relevant authorities.

He added that the official channel for student loan applications, which will be opened to the public in due course, is www.nelf.gov.ng.

NAN reports that the NELFUND said no fewer than 1.2 million Nigerian students in tertiary institutions and government-recognised skill acquisition centres will be among the first batch of beneficiaries.

The Managing Director of NELFUND, Mr Akintunde Sawyerr, on April 18 said the money to fund the loan scheme is one per cent of the revenue generated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service annually.

Economy

By Nifemi Owolabi

For most Nigerians, these are not the best of times. Why? The economy! Its painfully excruciating bites spare no one. Parents moan being unable to adequately feed their children amidst skyrocketing food prices, besides the struggles to pay school fees. And should the wards in school be beyond two, and then the ‘headache’ becomes more soaring?

How come Nigerians find themselves in this rough terrain? All hail subsidy removal! Last year, President Bola Tinubu, during his inauguration, announced the removal of fuel subsidies on the grounds that it was injurious to the Nigerian economy and only beneficial to some cabals.

Previous administrations had avoided the contentious issue of subsidy removal.

The effect of its removal has continued to sweep through the nation like a tsunami, hitting hard at the economic and social life of Nigerians, who were still reeling from the battery of cashless policy imposed on the nation by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Today, a bag of rice sells at about N60,000, beans at N1200 per congo, and gari N800; even mineral drinks, which people take as a leisure now, sell for N300. So, the question on every lip is ‘Whither are we heading?’

In light of the current situation, Nifemi Owolabi, an intern with Radio Nigeria Ibadan, interacted with undergraduates of some Nigerian universities to find out how they have been coping with the situation.

Owonifari Kolawole, a student of the Federal University of Technology Akure describes the situation as quite challenging. In the words of Awoyemi Deborah from the Federal University of Health Science, Ila Orangun, Osun State, “Every damn thing rises every day, and you never have a choice to get them, especially when it’s being asked for in school. With the things happening all around you also have to be considerate because you can always see what is happening at home and at large.”

Ogunjemilua Timothy from Federal University, Oye Ekiti letting a breath,  Hmmmm…., says “Well to be honest things have not been so easy but we thank God for his grace… We have been able to adapt to all the changes in the economy…we have turned it into opportunities….”

For Babatunde Samson from Ekiti State University, the present situation is dreary; he says “Being a student in the current Nigeria’s economy has some quality of suicide mission considering the 100 per cent increase in tuition fee,  as if there’s no advocate…”

Staff and students of Osun State Polythecnic Iree today stormed the school in Protest of the suspension of the institution’s Rector, Dr. Tajudeen Odetayo, and his replacement with an alleged kinsman of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Radio Nigeria recalls that the state government through a letter dated July 11, 2023 signed by the Permanent Secretary, Osun Ministry of Education, M.K. Jimoh suspended Odetayo for alleged corruption, misappropriation of funds, and abuse of office and replaced him with one Mr Kehinde Alabi.

The protesters led by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic , ASUP,  joined by some students and non-academic staff shut the gates of Osun Poly, chanting anti-government songs.

The protesters carried placards with several inscriptions to press home their demands against the appointment of the new Acting Rector, accusing the governor of nepotism.

While addressing the crowd who had gathered at the entrance of the institution as early as 7:00am to protest the suspension of Dr Odetayo, the chairman of the Union Dr. Fatai Afolabi expressed discontentment over the action of the Governor.

Dr Afolabi described the suspension as an aberration and  against the guidelines, noting that, no committee has been set up to try the rector let alone find him guilty of any offense before he was asked to vacate his seat as the rector.

According to him, “The governor appointed someone who is not qualified as the Acting Rector of the institution. The person that the governor appointed contested for the post of deputy rector and he lost out.

“We have a deputy rector on the ground who should replace him if the rector is removed, that is what the guidelines say, and in the absence of the deputy rector, the most senior chief lecturer will be appointed as Acting Rector.

“The person that was appointed in ranking among the chief Lecturer, he is not ranked from one to fifty. The only thing that qualifies him is that he is from Ede. The governor is nepotistic with appointments and dealings in Iree Poly. The governor wants to put Ede indegenes everywhere in the school which is not possible. Is it only Ede that voted for him? Everybody voted for him.

He continued, “Dr. Odetayo who was removed was alleged of corruption among others, he was never made to face any panel or inquiry, he was never issued query. The main reason for his removal was that he was invited by the Chief of Staff to the governor who instructed him to make the person they appointed as Acting Rector now the deputy rector. The order given to the rector goes beyond the capacity of the rector because it is by election, when they voted the anointed candidate of the Chief of Staff got 19 votes while the winner got 51 votes who is the most senior chief lecturer on campus.

“The state of things in Iree now is that all academic activities including the ongoing exam stands suspended until the governor do the otherwise which is doing the right thing.”

“We want to make it known to the governor that not only Ede people that voted for him, they could be the one that financed the governor’s election but not the only one that voted him to power.

“Mr Alabi loss the election as the deputy Rector why was he appointed.

Speaking with newsmen, the Commissioner for Education, Osun State, Mr Dipo Eluwole said that the suspension of the Rector was as a result of the allegations leveled against him.

Mr Eluwole said “We received a letter in this office about the financial recklessness of the Rector, so the next thing for us is to investigate.

“The government is yet to set up the panel because we just got a letter recently and when we know this will generate issues in the institution the government have to take step to suspend the Rector pending the outcome of the investigation of the panel that will be set up.

“The position cannot be in a vacuum. We have to appoint an acting rector to act pending the outcome of the investigation of the panel.

Authorities of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, have renewed their commitment to ensuring compliance with the approved dress code for students coming into the University campus.

The Management has reiterated that the move was aimed at ensuring strict compliance with extant regulations and principles guiding the conduct of students within the institution’s campus.

According to a statement by the Registrar of the University, Dr. ‘Bola Adekola, the Senate of FUNAAB had taken the decision on the issue of Dress Code at a meeting held on Tuesday, 14th December, 2021 and communicated same to the University Community via a circular FUNAAB/REG.11/VOL. III/52 of December 16, 2021.

It indicated that Farm Practical Year students should wear the approved green jumpsuit, rain-boot and hand gloves for their convenience and personal safety on the farms during the Farm Practical Year.

Describing the Senate’s decision as the final position on the subject matter, the statement by the University Registrar also emphasised the need for facial identification of all students at all times within the University Community.

The statement condemned the attempts by those described as misguided faceless individuals, reportedly sponsoring some online reports on religious sentiments to disrupt the endearing peace, harmony and the prevailing congenial academic environment of the University.

It noted that a judgment of the Federal High Court, sitting in Abeokuta on suit number FHC/AB/FHR/12/2022 dated May 19, 2022 by Justice O. Oguntoyinbo had ruled that the sole issue of use of face veil also known as ‘Niqob’ was resolved in favour of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta as the Respondent in the matter.

The statement showed that the court also ruled that fundamental human rights of freedom was not absolute in the instance while the FUNAAB management had urged aggrieved persons to approach the courts for a comprehensive interpretation of the judgement, stating that nowhere in the world could anyone enjoy public service anonymously without the consent and approval of the service provider and religion had nothing to do with the issue.

One of the items of the sustainable development goals is access to quality education.

In Nigeria at present however , over  7 months ASUU strike has destabilized the school’s academic calendar and also crippled business activities around varsities.

The 7months plus strike did not only affect business activities, academic calendar has been destabilized for the past few months.

According to a business owner around the Federal University of Technology FUTA  Akure Mrs Oluwakemi Sanya said she suffered a monumental loss  with the ongoing strike with about  50% low sales of her goods.

Another trader, Mrs Bola Akomolafe said many business areas on campuses had grown bushes, even as edible products worth millions of naira had been destroyed due to the unending strike.

Stories of students were quite different from the scenario portrayed by the business owners as the students claimed they diverted their energies into profitable or worthwhile ventures as revealed by  a 200 level political science student of the university of Ibadan ,Abdul Rahman Adebayo.

“I currently work as freelance reporter since the ASUU strike 7months ago,it is so pathetic that tertiary institutions can be shut when there is no pandemic or war Abdulraham Adebayo said “

Similarly ,his countertpart in the Usman Dan fodio University sokoto ,Abdul malik sufurullaahi said that the strike was  affecting his mental health  considering the fact this education had now been put on hold as a final year student

A visually impaired young man ,Oyediran Emmanuel from the university of Lagos  disclosed that he had engaged as volunteer to civil society organisations  to keep body and  soul  together .

Other students who spoke Oluwatuase Olatomiwa of the Olusegun Agagu university of science and technology Okitipupa,Ondo state ,Alofe Faith ,Obafemi Awolowo university Ile Ife ,Ewuje precious and peace oladipo of the federal university Oye Ekiti  however called for a compromise between government and ASUU for the schools to reopen for the future of the nations education system.

In a submission ,a university lecturer , Dr Gbenga Abimbola expressed displeasure with the poor handling of university education by government due to poor and outdated policies that endanger the country’s education system.

Parenting Tips

It is six months since the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, commenced strike following an impasse with Federal Government over unfulfilled agreements.
Consequently, students have borne the brunt of the imbroglio, being out of the academic environment trying to cope with the recurring decimal.

For some, it is not a new experience, as they had at one time or the other tasted the bitter pill of extension in the expected year of study in school occasioned by disagreement between academic or non-academic staff and government.

Truth be told, it is quite a challenging time for these students psychologically, emotionally and academically.  Therefore, as a parent or guardian, this is a passionate plea that you please take it easy with your young adults living with you.

The current situation that has forced them back home is neither their fault nor yours as parents, though both of you are paying for it when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.

Be kind with words towards them, be less judgemental and don’t be too quick to shut them up or throw insults.
This stage is hard for a lot of them. Very hard!

One of the students affected by the current ASUU strike reached out to me and said she was contemplating suicide.

One of the things that could easily frustrate a child is for his or her parents to be making assumptions and jumping to conclusions, without even wanting to hear him or her out. Please don’t do this to your children.

These young adults are not having it easy. If you have been to any institution of higher learning, you should already know how frustrating strikes can be.

A lot of young adults are exasperated. It’s hard trying to find your footing in a world so messed up.
Please be kind with your words towards your children and your wards.

Find time to converse with them. Ask them how they are doing, and how life is treating them. Ask them if they need help with anything and help as much as you can.

Reassure them that things will be fine and make efforts to be there for them.
If you used to send them money for upkeep while in school, please as long as you can afford to,  give them something even while they are at home. Every young adult has a need.
Don’t make matters worse by unnecessarily picking on them or being unreasonably unbendable.

It’s sad knowing that a lot of young adults are happier away from home and their parents. It’s really sad. Your home should be a safe haven for your kids and wards, not where they would rather not be.
Being unreasonably strict isn’t what will make anyone turn out right. If anything, it only breeds sleek, sneaky humans so please give them a little breathing space too.

You will also do well to counsel and engage them positively. You can never tell, this period may just be an eye opener to discover their purpose in life.
