The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde said Nigerians should cast their votes in defence of good governance during the forthcoming general elections in 2023.

Governor Makinde, who stated this while speaking at the Special thanksgiving church service to commemorate Nigeria’s 62nd Independence anniversary, held at the Cathedral of St. Peters, Aremo, Ibadan, said that Nigerians need to keep hope alive as according to him, there is light at the end of the current dark alley in the country.

He urged the people to keep hope alive and be steadfast in their prayers for the nation.

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Olubamiwo Adeosun, stated that despite the series of challenges the country is witnessing, the people need not lose hope.

The governor added that aside the rise in crimes and criminality, the country is also burdened by economic difficulties, which he said appears to defy social-scientific prognosis.

He stated:”A peep at the front cover of any of the national dailies published in Nigeria easily portrays a country in dire straits.

“But our message today is that of hope.

“That there is light at the end of the dark alley and like Moses confidently declared to the children of Israel in Exodus 14: 13, the Egyptians whom we see today, we shall see no more forever, Amen.”

He said that Oyo State has, however, been able to stay afloat despite taking its share of the national crisis.

He said: “But here we have chosen to ride the storm through the faithful implementation of the Poverty to Posterity mantra of this administration.

“In line with our dedication to rise above the national tide, this administration launched the Roadmap for Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019 to 2023 immediately we assumed office on May 29. 2019.

” And with the religious implementation of the four-point service delivery agenda encapsulated by the roadmap, we isolated the four key existential realities of human beings including Security, Health, Education, and Economic expansion, using the agribusiness value chain.

“Without Security, life is hellish; without good Health, life is gloomy; without Education, life is in despair and without a good Economic prospect, life is melancholic.

“Thus, our state set sail with well-grounded policies that yielded 100 well-equipped security vehicles for security agencies within 100 days in office; creation of community policing initiatives and the Amotekun corps;  turn-around of State

“The result of the carefully welded service delivery programme, e capsulated in the Four-point service agenda, is the positive outcomes being witnessed in the state today.

“Ibadan, the State capital has been ranked as the second fastest growing city in Africa, according to a rating by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).’

“Cities and zones of the state are being linked with brand new roads, a Light-Up Oyo Project covering over 200 kilometres of roads across the state is up and running, while we have equally turned around the skyline of the state with projects such as the bus terminals, remodeled stadia, and others.

“As our people go to the polls in February and March 2023, I can only urge you to cast your votes in defence of good governance and service delivery.”

In his sermon, Bishop of Ibadan North Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Williams Aladekugbe, urged Nigerians to always be their brothers ‘keeper

He called on those in positions of power and authority to use their positions to uplift the less privileged people in society.

He also decried the worsening insecurity and economic challenges in the country.

According to him, the development is due to the lack of capacity of those at the helm of affairs.

Aladekugbe urged the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve their issues and end the strike without further delay.

He stated that the strike was seriously affecting the entire teaching and learning system among students and their lecturers across the country.

The Clergyman commended the Governor Makinde-led administration for the regular payment of the workers’ salary as and when due, adding that the series of infrastructural projects being undertaken by the current administration in Oyo State are visible across the nooks and crannies of the state.

He said: “On behalf of the government and the good people of Oyo State, I congratulate the Osun State Governor-Elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke and the people of Osun State on this victory.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde and his Osun State counterpart, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, have concluded plans to jointly rehabilitate and reconstruct the Iwo Road interchange- to Ogunremako Junction-Lalupon, down to Iwo-Osogbo road.

The road is a major link between the neighbouring Southwest states.

The Commissioners for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport in Oyo State, Professor Daud Kehinde Sangodoyin and his Osun State counterpart, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, jointly announced the historic collaboration on Monday at a press conference held at the Oyo State Ministry of Works and Transport, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Professor Sangodoyin and Engineer Omowaiye said the development would enhance the quality of lives of the people.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted Sangodoyin as explaining that Oyo State would handle 29.2 kilometres of the over 80 kilometres road project.

Prof. Sangodoyin stated that a section of the road belongs to the Federal Government, while other parts belong to the states, adding that the Federal Government had been notified of the impending construction.

State Commissioners for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport also noted that Oyo State would take care of the section from the Iwo Road Interchange, Ibadan,  to the boundary with Osun State, while Osun State would handle rest to Osogbo.

He said: “On the authority of Governor, Seyi Makinde and Governor Gboyega Oyetola, we are here to address the press on the joint collaboration of the proposed rehabilitation; reconstruction and overlaying of Iwo Road interchange road to Ogunremako junction, down to Lalupon, which is the boundary between Osun and Oyo States.

“On the other end of Osun State, we have the Iwo boundary down to Osogbo, which is about 69km. From the side of Oyo State, it is about 29.2km.

“The two-state governors, their directors and commissioners in charge of works and transport have met and did a joint inspection of the road for the benefit of our people, and for us to be able to award the contract.”

According to Sangodoyin, the project sits right within the agenda of the Governor Makinde-led administration to take Oyo State people from poverty to prosperity and to build infrastructure that targets the economy of the state.

“One of the major benefits of the project is regional integration, using that axis. For the two states, agriculture is the only comparative advantage. So, in expanding the economy of the two states, we have to focus on agriculture and food security, and that is why we want to tap into the resources on that axis and contribute to what we call the Domestic Resource Flow, while expanding the economy.

“Also, we looked at security around that axis. By the time we reduce the infrastructure deficit around that axis, we would have improved on the security infrastructure, because, as I speak now, the road from Iwo down to Olodo is nothing to write home about.

“If we are able to cooperate with Osun State, we will be able to improve the security infrastructure.

“We are also focusing on ease-of-doing-business. There will be ease of movement of goods from Osogbo down to Ibadan. By the time we complete the project at Iwo Road, the 29.2km road and 5.5km road to Airport, Adegbayi road, we believe that it will contribute to business development around that axis.

“So, today, we felt we should come around and tell the whole world that we are brothers and are ready to partner to improve the means of livelihood of our own people.

“We have commenced the processes of awarding the Iwo Road interchange to Lalupon, the boundary between the two states and have sectionalised it into three parts.

“The first part is from Iwo Road interchange to Olodo bridge, which is 7.7km and the stretch of the bridge, which we are going to dualise, is 500 metres; from Ogunremako junction to Lalupon, which is 20.3km. In all, we are working on a 29.2km stretch and within the next few weeks, we should be able to award the contract. The two governors will come together to flag it off in due time,” Sangodoyin added.

In his remarks, the Osun State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Engr. Omowaiye, said that the Osun State government would handle 54.4km of the road that borders Oyo and Osun States.

He said: “Just like he ( his Oyo State counterpart ) said, we are brothers. For the two governors, what is important is the development of our race. Bad infrastructure does not know APC or PDP. If you look at that road, you can see an alignment of 5km stretch and that is the easiest route to Ibadan. About a year ago, we started a discussion on the need to collaborate and the two governors graciously agreed.

“We all know that the two states are agrarian states and this development will allow for easy movement of agric produce on that corridor.

“Oyo State will be doing 29.2km while we will be doing 54.4km. We are taking it from Deleyesa in Osogbo to the boundary of Oyo State. “We are sending a message to the people that irrespective of party affiliation, we are brothers and the development of our states is of utmost importance.

“I can tell you we have not brought politics into this. What we want is good infrastructure. This is a good thing for the two states, which will promote commerce and agriculture as well as make movement between residents of the two states easy.”

The duo hinted that the project, upon completion, will enhance socio-economic activities, boost security and ease movement of people and goods between the two states. They added that Oyo and Osun governments would meet again to deliberate on modalities of executing the project, amount to spend, duration and the contractor that would handle.

Economy

As the world marks Workers Days, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo has commended the Labour Unions in the state for adding value to governance, consistently defending and improving the political, economic and the social rights of the people of Oyo State.

He gave the commendation during this year’s Workers Day held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba,Ibadan.

Governor Makinde who was represented by the Secretary to the state government, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun said his administration recognized the sacrifices, and contribution of all the workers of Oyo State in the face of the difficulties and challenges posed by the present economic situation in the country.

The governor while emphasizing the roles of workers to policies implementation enumerated programmes employed by his government to make life better for them such as prompt payment of salaries, provision of buses to convey workers, training and re-training of civil servants in the state.

He therefore urged the Oyo state civil servants to desist from all forms of misconduct ranging from truancy, lateness to work, disloyalty to the government, embezzlement, and other improper conducts.

He said”Let me also state that as we are moving to the electioneering period, it is essential for all workers to eschew all forms of political participation thereby upholding the principles and ethics of the civil service.

“It is worthy of note that we release a total sum of Four Hundred and Eighty Million Naira (N480,000,00.00) monthly for payment of gratuities to Local Government, Primary School and State Retirees”

“On 28th May 2021, this administration delivered Nine Brand New Buses for conveyance of workers to and from their places of work at no cost. In order to make it stress free for the Department administering the vehicles, we had to increase the amount of fuel given to these buses from 80litres per week to 200litres per week. It was our belief that this would enable the buses cover more routes and thereby convey more workers”.

“Let me also add that government has listened to some of the complaints coming from workers on the operation of the Pacesetter buses. We have therefore decided to add two additional buses to join the Olodo and Egbeda routes. This is as a result of the need to effectively serve the huge population of workers on those routes. Besides, the bus plying Ojoo route will now extend to Moniya, while the one on Challenge route will now get to New Garage.

“Training and development must be built into it on all levels, training, and development that never stop.” This administration believes that the Civil/Public Service is the engine room of any government. Therefore, the success of the government depends on the vibrancy of the Civil/Public Service that helps in the execution and implementation of policies”.

“Let me place on record that the state government has trained over Twenty Thousand Workers across the state in different areas specially to support the Four (4) cardinal programmes of this administration. This has been bearing fruits as many workers are seen to have been more dedicated and effective in the performance of their duties”.

“In order to have more capable hands in some segments in the Civil/Public Service we recruited Six Hundred and Ninety-Two (692) Education Officers to man the affairs of such Schools under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology”

In a remark,Oyo state chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress,Kayode Martins while commending the state government for its various programmes on welfarism of workers urged the government to support the autonomy of Local government.
