Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has declared that some of the Presidential Aspirants under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have agreed to support a consensus candidate ahead of the 2023 general election.

Senator Saraki said this while speaking with news at the Agodi Government House, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, after a meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde.

Senator Saraki led other three Presidential Aspirants of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) including Governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Muhammed Ayatudeen and other top party chieftains to the Oyo State Government House, Agodi, Ibadan to brainstorm on the issue.

They had earlier held a meeting behind closed doors with Governor Seyi Makinde.

Senator Saraki, disclosed that Nigeria is bigger than anyone’s ambition and with the state of things in the country, all hands must be on deck to salvage the situation.

The former Senate President reiterated that there was need for unity of purpose among leaders and members of the party, urging the party to agree on a consensus candidate.

Also speaking, Governor Makinde declared that the meeting was fruitful, noting that PDP would present a Presidential candidate that would be acceptable to all.

Governor Makinde affirmed that the group would work together to ensure people understand the consensus arrangement and addressed confusion that might arose from such decision.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial aspirants in Oyo Central Senatorial District under the aegis of Forum of Senatorial Aspirants, have rejected the purported endorsement of former Chief of Staff to Governor Seyi Makinde, Chief Bisi Ilaka, as the consensus senatorial candidate for the district.

In a letter dated April 4, 2022, and addressed to Makinde, the aspirants stated categorically that the purported endorsement of Ilaka by some party stakeholders on April 3, did not go down well with them, based on the fact that the process was pre-determined and under serious security threat.

The letter, signed by two senatorial aspirants, Hon. Wale Adegoke and Comrade Wale Ajani respectively, said a free and fair democratic process should be allowed to take place.

“As a democrat sir, we believe you are aware that the basic principle of consensus is for all participating aspirants to agree with signatures, this we believe the stakeholders did not do.

“We hereby humbly appeal to you to allow the democratic process to take place by allowing free and fair primary.

“We count on your support sir,” it added.

The state chairman, deputy national chairman and senatorial chairman of the party were copied in the letter.

The attention of the Oyo State Government has been drawn to an article publicised by Sahara Reporters, titled, “School Notebooks: N998 Million Oyo Government Project Exposes Contract Inflation, Jobs Awarded To Companies 2 Months After Registration,” in which it was alleged that “each copy of the 60 leaves notebook cost the state N2,100 to print.”

In a statement signed by the State Commissioner For Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun says that the state government is appalled at this submission which betrays a lack of journalistic or investigative rigour. We are baffled that any news media would arrive at conclusions regarding contract awards without reaching out to any agency of the Oyo State Government for comments or clarifications.

For the avoidance of doubt, for the 2020/2021 academic session, the Oyo State Government awarded contracts for the supply of exercise books for a total sum of N446,370,480.

The award was to 8 different contractors in 14 lots to supply customised 60 and 80 leaves exercise books. The 14 lots consisted of six lots of 212,505 customised 60 leaves exercise books, and six lots of 178,663 customised 80 leaves exercise books.

There were additional two lots of 200,004 customised 60 leaves exercise books, and 178,668 customised 80 leaves exercise books.

This gives a total of 2,725,680 customised exercise books at the rate of N150/60 leaves customised exercise books and N180/80 leaves customised exercise books.

You may recall that for the 2020/2021 academic session, the Oyo State Government distributed over 2.7 million exercise books in secondary schools across the state.

Each secondary school student got 6 exercise books each.

Had these reporters followed the ethics of their profession to seek comments from the Oyo State Government through the multiple feedback channels we have online and offline, the matter would have been clarified.

Instead, they resorted to malice and bad faith to malign the Oyo State Government and smear its reputation.

Therefore, we have resolved to sue these media outfits for the malicious publications.

The general public is urged to disregard this disinformation propagated by Sahara Reporters and its cohorts.

The Oyo State Government will continue to display fidelity, accountability, integrity, transparency and honesty in all its activities.

Anyone who has questions regarding any contract awards in Oyo State is free to approach relevant agencies for clarification.

The conference of Speakers of the State Legislature of Nigeria has frowned at the exclusion of the State Policing in the Resolution of the National Assembly in the ongoing constitution amendment.

This was contained in a communiqué issued in Ibadan, Oyo State at the end of its 2022 first quarter general meeting with the theme, “The Imperative of On-Going Alteration of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The conference, however, directed its Committee on Constitution Review to further laise with the National Assembly with a view to ensuring State Policing is reconsidered, in view of the unfortunate prevailing security challenges in the country.

Earlier, at the opening ceremony, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers and Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, Mr Abubakar Suleman, said the meeting was to further look into the bills with a view to ultimately guiding participants on their roles to ractify the resolution of the National Assembly.

Mr Suleman described the ongoing legislative processes of constitution amendment as one of the viable ways of addressing many of the issues currently causing agitations in the country.

In their sperate remarks, Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, Mr Amisu Ibrahim, his Delta State counterpart, Mr Sherif Oborevwori, and Niger State Assembly Speaker, Abdulahi Wuse said the bills on financial autonomy for local government might require more attention.

In a goodwill message, Oyo State governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde who said constitutional amendment is a must for the country to move forward, admonished the speakers to take the conversation beyond the electoral act and consider issues of state police and resource control.

Earlier in a welcome address, the host, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin gave assurance that the forty-four alteration bills before the state legislatures would get the desired attention.

Residents of Oyo town have expressed deep worry over the deteriorating state of environmental sanitation in their various communities, a situation they partly attributed to the sudden disappearance of government refuse trucks from the local government areas.

Some of the residents, who spoke with Radio Nigeria alleged that the trucks, especially that of Atiba and Oyo West local governments were sighted in Ibadan, wondering if Governor Seyi Makinde was aware of the strange development.

A community leader, Mr Dominic Taiwo also allegedly saw one of the trucks in Ibadan actively engaged in the refuse collection while residents of Oyo town where it belongs hire tipper lorries to evacuate their refuse.

Lamenting the disappearance of the refuse trucks from their local government area, traders at the Akunlemu garage indicated their readiness to fuel the truck whenever it is available to serve their interests.

They called for urgent investigation before refuse heaps spread out of control with risks of epidemics in the area.

Some Directors of Environmental Health services contacted in the affected local government councils declined comments.

“I’m not interested to say Yes! We have already canvassed our position, but that does not mean that we would not also listen to our own Brothers on the other side. But, at the end of the day, we would take a decision that would help the party to move forward”

Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde has commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the ongoing Driving School Standardization Programme (DSSP).

The governor who was represented by the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), Mogaji Akin Fagbemi PhD at the 2021 National Workshop for Proprietors and Trainings for Instructors of Driving Schools organized by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said the programme was aimed at improving driving school operations in Nigeria.

He also said it meant to develop uniform standards, safety consciousness, professionalism and proficiency in driver education.

The governor explained that Oyo State government would consolidate on the existing partnership with the Corps to ensure continuous and adequate training of drivers across the State.

He charged all the drivers to be more careful and vigilante during this last quarter of the year.

He said “the great successes recorded in monitoring and regulating the driving school industry through driver training education which is evident in the reduction of road traffic crashes over the years as a result of improved driver education in recent times”.

“It is also very important to note here, that training of learner and professional drivers must be carried out in accordance with standards enshrined in the driving schools training manual, with all the required training facilities in place, most importantly trainees must undergo all the sessions required for the type of vehicles they intend to learn how to drive and at the end must pass the Compulsory Computer Base Test (CBT) before the National Drivers Licence is issued to them”.

“Through these efforts put in place by the FRSC, Nigeria has been recognized globally by several organizations including the United Nations and other international road safety organizations. Our National Drivers License is now recognized and accepted by counties across the globe.
