As the world marks the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, stakeholders have called on the federal government to prioritize disaster risk reduction education to empower the next generation.

Mr Kolawole Amusat-Gbenla, Disaster Risk Reduction Lead and Zonal Coordinator South West Zone for the Climate and Sustainable Development Network, made this known in a statement marking the day.

According to the statement, the theme of this year’s celebration, “Empowering the next generation for a resilient future,” highlighted the crucial role of education in protecting and empowering youth to build a disaster-free future.

“Nigeria must prioritize disaster risk reduction curricula in schools, allocate adequate budgets for resilience activities, invest in safe and resilient schools, and collaborate with tertiary institutions to promote a culture of disaster risk reduction,” Amusat-Gbenla said.

It notes that the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting children and youths from disasters, while governments and relevant organizations can work together to address the issue by empowering people with disaster risk reduction knowledge and skills.

The statement adds that the celebration also acknowledged the efforts of various stakeholders, including NEMA, SEMAs and other agencies in reducing disaster risks and climate threats in Nigeria.
