The President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and other newly elected leaders have been urged not to deviate from their campaign promises when inaugurated into office.

An Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Hashim Atere gave the admonition while delivering the 2023 fifth Shina Peller-sponsored Ramadan Lecture/Iftar held at Dapọ Aderọgba hall, NUJ Secretariat, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

Sheikh Atere, who spoke on the theme: ‘Inescapable Reward of Kept and Un-kept Promises in Public Offices’, explained that politicians could assume any character to win the mind of electorates and thereafter abandon them after they assume office. 

The Cleric noted that the mandate given to them represented the lives, hope and voices of the people hence, the elected leaders must justify the confidence reposed on them through constant engagement and delivery of dividends of democracy

On his part, the sponsor of the programme, the Ayedero of Yorubaland and Member of the House of Representatives for Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency of Oyo State, Chief Shina Peller, said keeping promises and terms of the agreement made him not to seek a return to the green chamber for the second time in the just concluded general election.

Earlier, in an address Chairman, NUJ, Oyo State Council, Mr. Demola Babalola called on the elected leaders to see every promise made during the 2023 electioneering as a debt which must be paid.

Highpoint of the event was the breaking of the fast with Muslim journalists, dignitaries and guests in attendance.
