The actual data of Nigerian children has been dwindling in the last five years, and this has made it difficult for the government to make adequate provisions for them.

To this end, the National Population Commission, NPC, is to embark on a registration exercise for children from 0-5 years nationwide.

The e-registration will be held for two weeks beginning on August 1 this year.

Federal Commissioner of the commission in Oyo State, Dr Eyitayo Oyetunji at the flag-off and training on electronic civil statistics , said the exercise would take a leap from analogue to digital, thereby making the data gathered from the exercise accurate and accessible in Nigeria’s database.

Dr Oyetunji who noted that the exercise is free appealed to parents to avail their children of the opportunity to be registered during the exercise

The Federal Commissioner who said the exercise was in collaboration with the United Nations Children fund, UNICEF, who is the major financier of the programme said the exercise would cut across all the 33 local government areas of Oyo state.

“A child that is not registered has no right in the country and can be hindered from enjoying some other benefits within or outside such country…”

In their goodwill messages, Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, represented by a Director in the ministry, Dr Gbolahan Abass, Oyo state Director, National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mrs Olukemi Afolayan; Oyo state coordinator, National Identification Management Agency, NIMC, Mr Adeoye Azeez and the statistician General represented by Mr Kunle Ajunwon noted that registration of children in the state was low and had negatively affected government’s plan for the children, thereby calling for a common link for all registered individuals in the country.

They promised to always collaborate with NPC to achieve accurate data for the benefit of the citizens and the nation at large.

The Ad-hoc staff drawn from the 33 local government areas of the state promised to be accurate with their data.
