The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has promised to give speedy consideration to the issue of stagnation of some graduate teachers at Grade Level 14, as part of his administration’s policy to improve the welfare of members of the profession.

Governor Oborevwori gave the assurance in Asaba, the State capital at an event to commemorate the 2024 World Teachers Day, held with the theme: Valuing Teacher Voices towards a Social Contract for Education.

The Governor who was represented by the Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, also taxed teachers to strive towards excellence, and to adapt to global trends in the imparting of knowledge to students.

The State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers Mr. Titus Okotie, at the event outlined some of the challenges affecting the teaching profession in the state to include: lack of adequate teaching materials, shortage of secondary school teachers and fencing of some schools to provide a secured learning environment.

Meanwhile, the Rector, Delta State Polytechnic Oghara, Prof. Emmanuel Ufiofio, who delivered a lecture at the Teachers Day celebration, noted that for the country to become a productive society, there was the need to give higher standard to the status of teachers, and to incorporate teachers’ voices in decision making in the education sector.
