BREAKING: Abdullahi Adamu Emerges APC National Chairman

Former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has been declared National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State made this known at Eagles Square, Abuja, venue of the APC national convention, after an aye-and-nay vote, according to the Punch.

Earlier, the party had released its unity list which named the lawmaker as its National Chairman.

First Batch Of Nigerians Arrive Abuja From Ukraine

The first batch of Ukraine based Nigerians stranded in the country following invasion by Russia have arrived in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital.

The report has it that, Ukraine based Nigerians arrived in the country on Friday morning from Romania.

Max Air flight VM602 from Bucharest landed in Abuja at about 7:10 AM with the next flight from Hungary currently being expected.

“To God be the glory, Max Air evacuation flight VM602 from Bucharest touched down in Abuja,” Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, confirmed.

According to a source, the federal government will give $100 each to the Ukraine returnees upon their arrival.

Buhari Assents To Electoral Bill

 President Muhammadu Buhari has finally signed into law, the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The President assented to the bill at past midday on Friday, at a brief ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the Aso Villa in Abuja.

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, witnessed the signing of the bill.

The President received the bill from the National Assembly on the 31st of January for a second time after he returned the bill to the legislative arm.

President Buhari had told the National Assembly to remove the clause that had to do with direct primaries for political parties from the electoral act amendment bill.

European – African Union’s Summit: President Buhari Returns To Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to Abuja after a successful engagement in the 6th European-African Unions summit in Brussels, Belgium.

While in Belgium, the President held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit with other heads of government to boost the bond between their countries.

Under the auspices of the “G4”, the President and the Presidents of Algeria, South Africa, and Ethiopia, agreed to strengthen the platform for the resolution of the various issues confronting Africa.

At the summit, President Buhari drew attention to the imbalance in economic and trade co-operations between Europe and Africa, and called for a change in the trend.

The President sought the support of Europe to African Union’s efforts at stemming the new wave of manipulation of constitutions and the attendant coups in Africa.

Osun Governorship Primary Election:”I Have Edge Over Others” – Oyetola

Ahead of February 19 Governorship Primary election of the All Progressive Congress in Osun state,Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has said he remained the aspirant to beat in the contest.

Governnor Oyetola stated this shortly after appearing before the Screening Committee of the APC at the party’s National Secretariat, Abuja.

The governor boasted that his achievements since he began steering the affairs of the state in the last three years , put him ahead of other aspirants.

“Recently, I began a strategic consultation with the party members to seek their support ahead of the primary election. And the reception has been very encouraging. So far, we have visited 18 councils.

“I don’t want to talk about individuals. But I believe that I remain the aspirant to beat,” Oyetola added.

He was accompanied to the party Secretariat by party leaders,friends, supporters and loyalists, including his cabinet members.

The former Osun Secretary to State Government, SSG, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, was also at the party secretariat for screening.

Alhaji Adeoti hails from Iwo in Iwo Local Government Area of the State.

It would be recalled that the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, had charged his subjects to vote for the incumbent Governor.

Oluwo advised his subjects not to waste their resources and energy working against the second term agendum of the governor, saying only those that are not interested in the growth and development of the town in particular and Osun State in general would want to run against Governor Oyetola.

Major General Bamidele Alabi Becomes Fifth Commandant, Army War College Nigeria

Sequel to the recent posting and appointment in the Nigerian Army, the newly appointed Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria, AWCN, Major General Bamidele Alabi has taken over command as the 5th Commandant in the annals of history of the premier Nigerian Army Institution from his predecessor, Major General Solomon Udounwa.

The colourful ceremony took place at the premises of AWCN, WU Bassey Barracks, Asokoro Abuja.

General Alabi is among the 5 pioneer Directing Staff of the College when it was established on 28 February 2017.

He is a member of 41 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

He is of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps.

The new Commandant has held various appointments in command, staff and instructional capacity.

These  include, member of Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, AFCSC, Jaji, Commanding Officer, Nigerian Battalion 29, NIBATT 29,  United Nations Mission in Liberia, UNMIL, and Commander 3 Brigade Kano, prior to  his appointment as Director of Studies and Coordination at AWCN.

He is also a Member of Nigerian Institute of Management, NIM, and a Senior Executive Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School.

Some of the key Military Courses he attended include Senior Staff Course in AFCSC, Advanced Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom and Higher Defence Strategic Studies Course at National Defence College Nigeria.

In his valedictory speech, the outgoing Commandant, Major General Solomon E Udounwa, who is now the Chief of Army Special Services and Programmes congratulated the new Commandant whom he described as integral part of the College having served as Directing Staff as well as Director of Studies prior to his recent appointment as Commandant.

He wished him a fruitful and successful tenure urging the entire College community to extend same cooperation and support rendered him to his successor so that the College will continue to succeed.

In his remarks, the new Commandant General Bamidele A. Alabi, promised to build on the legacy of the immediate past Commandant.

He also thanked him for his purposeful leadership and mentoring which he said spans for decades.

Highpoints of the event include signing of handing and taking over notes, presentation of College flag to the incoming Commandant, presentation of souvenirs, address to soldiers and Civilian Staff and Quarter Guards formalities.

Fuel Subsidy: ASCSN Threatens Showdown

National Executive Council, NEC, will today consider the adoption of a report by its ad hoc committee on fuel subsidy removal and the increase of petrol price to N302 per litre.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to preside over the meeting, to be attended by all the governors and other federal officials.

The Trade Union Congress will on Thursday also take a position on the planned removal of the fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

The TUC Deputy Secretary, Nuhu Toro, told newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, that the congress would hold a meeting over the subsidy issue.

Also speaking, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria opposed the plan by the Federal Government to remove the fuel subsidy and increase the pump price.

The ASCSN President, Tommy Okon, said his association and Nigerians would resist the move.

He said, “Of course, Nigerians are resting assured that they would be defended by our union; that’s why we are here and that’s why we are saying it is a wrong decision to take at this time when workers’ wages are still stagnant. No increase, they have not made any provision.

“The transport system has not been looked into. So, you just wake up and say you are removing fuel subsidies. Where in other climes has this been done? Even when you give the subsidy, is it not the wealthy few that still hijacked it? The fight is not about workers, it is what Nigerians must rise and resist.”

Okon stated that the union had already taken a position on the issue, insisting that “no sane government should at this point of economic harshness decide to impoverish the people.”

There have been fears of likely fuel price increase since the Minister of Finance and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, announced the plan to remove petrol subsidy last June.

According to an online news medium, reported on Wednesday that a committee of the National Economic Council had recommended that petrol should be sold at N302 per litre from February when the government would cease to subsidize the petroleum products in the country.

The report explained that NEC made the recommendations last November. The recommendations were reportedly put forward by the NEC ad-hoc committee interfacing with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on the appropriate pricing of PMS in Nigeria.

Prison Inmate Commits Suicide

Obinna Echianu, an inmate of the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja who was also on death row has committed suicide.

The deceased was sentenced for murder of an Uber driver, Inalegwu Ali in Abuja, last year.

He hung himself with his clothes inside the prison’s toilet on Saturday. Obinna’s remains was discovered by other inmates, removed and deposited at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital mortuary.

Although the deceased was sentenced to death, his lawyer had appealed his conviction. He was arraigned last year alongside one Everly Nnorom, by the police on five-count of armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, and culpable homicide.

The deceased was accused of dispossessing Ali of his Nissan Almera at Gosa pedestrian bridge, Airport Road, Abuja, and also killed him after the robbery.

His death was confirmed by Humphrey Chukwuedo, spokesman, Nigeria Correctional Service, Federal Capital Territory Command.

The spokesperson who confirmed the death on Monday said the body has been taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Kogi Flames

Post-Eidel Kabir: Slight Increase in Cost of Interstate Travel

Passengers returning to their destinations after the Eidel kabir celebration in Ibadan may likely experience slight increase in the transport fare.

The development followed the limited numbers of passengers expected to be carried by transporters as well as possible increase in the volumes of passengers later in the week.

During a visit by our correspondent to Ojoo, Iwo Road and Challenge Motor Parks, it was observed that few passengers were still noticed while little hike was observed compared to what obtained before.

At Ojoo, Radio Nigeria observed that Ibadan to other states in the northern region cost between 7, 500 and 9, 050 naira while other states in the South-South from the ancient city cost between 5, 500 and 10, 000 naira, Ibadan to Abuja on the other hand cost 8, 000 naira.

Confirming the fare, at Iwo road, two park managers, Mr Daniel Odiniya and Felix Bayode said Ibadan five passengers were the numbers specified for each car to allow for physical distancing.

A transporter at Ojoo, Mr Motuf Olatunbosun said Ibadan to Sango Ota and other axis in Lagos costs between 1,500 and 2,500 naira.

Radio Nigeria also observed that Ibadan to Akure and Ado Ekiti ranged between 2,000 and 2,500 naira.

A passenger, Mr Adegoroye Oluwole said government should cushion the effects of the coronavirus pandemic through financial assistance for the transporters.

It was however observed that few passengers complied with the safety protocols of wearing the masks while other passengers in the buses do not observe physical distancing.

FG Begins Fumigation of Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt Airports

Ahead of the reopening of flight Operations in Nigeria, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria FAAN has commenced the fumigation of the Lagos, Abuja and Port-harcourt International airports.

The fumigation exercise is against the Coronavirus pandemic ravaging the world.

It is not clear yet when the ban on Flights will be lifted but the agency is taking this proactive steps to ensure the safety of passengers and other Airport users when the gateways are reopened.

In March this year, the Agency embarked on a similar exercise of disinfection and fumigation of all the international airports.

With the extension on the ban on flight Operations by 4 weeks last month by the Chairman, Presidential Task Force, PTF on Covid19, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, it is hoped that by June, flight Operations may resume, however, the ban is still subject to review.

INEC Headquarters Fire: Our Operations Won’t be Affected – Mr Okoye

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says the fire that occurred at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja would not affect its operations in any way as nothing significant was destroyed.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye made this known in statement issued in Abuja.

Mr. Okoye explained that the fire broke out around 11:30am at a section of the building housing the Election and Party Monitoring Department and the Media Centre.

He said the fire was quickly contained by the firefighters attached to the commission with the assistance of their colleagues from the Federal Fire Service Headquarters, in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The INEC Official noted that as a result of the quick action of the firefighters, apart from some office equipment and furniture, nothing sensitive was lost to the fire.

He said the reports of party primaries and conventions contained in the annex affected by the fire were intact as well as records of campaign finances.

Mr. Okoye added that investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced with the assurance that the administrative and technical operations of INEC would not be affected in any way by the fire.

COVID-19: Nigeria Limits International Arrivals to 2 Airports

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire says International travel into Nigeria has been limited to two airports, to enable proper screening of arriving travellers into the country.

The minister stated this while giving updates on the Coronavirus pandemic in Abuja. 

Dr Ehanire said the two airports are Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja while domestic flights are not included.

He also stated that Nigeria has identified Austria and Sweden as two more high-risk countries within the past 24 hours.

The minister stressed that people who just returned from infected countries in the last 3 weeks and people who have had close contact with someone who has either tested positive or who just returned from a foreign trip are eligible for testing as the test kits and reagents are becoming too scarce for random testing.

He urged people who just got back from foreign trips to self-isolate for a minimum of 14 days to protect others and reduce chances of infecting others noting that self-Isolation is a social responsibility, in order to protect members of their family, community and society.

Dr Ehanire said the federal government is aggressively involved in contact tracing of people who have contact with anyone who has tested positive to the virus.
