Against the backdrop of a purported plot by the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, to impeach the State Deputy Governor, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, the leadership of the House has condemned the rumour and its purveyor.

The House described the story as baseless, misleading and absolutely condemnable.

Reacting to the rumour, the Chairman House of Assembly Committee on Information, Communication & Technology, Mr. Kazeem Olayanju said the fallacious story was amusing to all the 32 Lawmakers in the state Assembly.

Mr. Olayanju said there was never a time such was discussed or the idea was mooted by the legislators in the chamber or outside.

The report had alleged that the cold war between the Governor and his deputy had assumed a dangerous dimension and that the Deputy Governor would be impeached anytime soon by the PDP dominated Oyo State House of Assembly.

Honourable Olayanju said, “The purportedly planned impeachment process against the Oyo State Deputy Governor by the House under my watch is a farce, a fluke and a figment of the sick imagination of the writer, sponsor or originator of the fake news. We were dumbfounded when we read the news and we were asking ourselves if the story was actually referring to us, the 9th Oyo State House of Assembly”.

“It baffles one how some journalists will deliberately flout the ethics of accuracy, truthfulness and objectivity in news reportage which are the hallmarks of the pen profession”.

“Is it also not comical for the purveyor of the fake information to claim that Oyo lawmakers would be meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde in Ghana to orchestrate the planned removal of the Deputy Governor? There’s really nothing of such from our end here. We just resumed from our recess and we already have a lot of legislative matters begging for attention on our table. The issue of impeachment process against the Deputy Governor is strange to us and we are not aware of it”.

While saying that the PDP administration in Oyo State is in the process of reconciling all its aggrieved members to help consolidate on the political strength and gains of the party ahead of future elections, the Chairman House Committee on Information, Communication & Technology said Governor Seyi Makinde has promised to make peace and work with everyone to lift Oyo State to a higher pedestal.

The Oyo State House of Assembly has celebrated its 2nd Anniversary with a call to the Federal Government to begin the process of restructuring the country.

The Anniversary was marked with a special plenary session which was attended by the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde and other political functionaries and dignitaries.

In his Anniversary remark , the Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin said with the various challenges confronting the nation, there could not have been a more better time than now for the nation to hearken to the call for  restructuring of the country.

He added that the restructuring should commence with the review of the 1999 Constitution.

According to him, some items on the Exclusive Legislative List should moved to the Concurrent Legislative List.

” There’s too much concentration of power at the Center. As a House we are saying that some items in the Exclusive Legislative List like , Item 2 (Arms, Ammunition and Explosives), Item 3 (Aviation), Item 39 (Mines and Minerals), Item 45 (Police and other security Agencies), Item 55 (Railways), and Item 63 (Traffic on Federal Trunk Roads) should be moved to Concurrent and Residual Legislative Lists.

” I believe if restructuring is done, States and Local Government will have the power to effectively manage their internal security using State and Local Police. This means each State will be able to tackle its security challenges headlong. I want to stress that most of the items on the Exclusive Legislative List would be more efficiently managed at the State and Local levels, he said.

While highlighting the achievements of the 9th Oyo State House of Assembly in the last two years, Mr Ogundoyin said it had passed a total of 56 bills , and made 83 resolutions.

This , he maintained was aside from the various oversight functions carried out by the Lawmakers.

Lack of good governance has been described as the bane of socio-economic development of Nigeria, as the country marks her sixty years of independence.

Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin made this known in his Diamond Jubilee Independence message to Nigerians.

The speaker said at sixty, the three tiers of government, the Federal, State and Local Governments are in need of quality and selfless leaders who will practice, promote and champion good governance for all round development.

Mr Ogundoyin expressed disappointment over the attitude of the nation’s leaders which he noted has crippled the growth of Nigeria, saying that the nation desires selfless leaders and not greedy eaters.

“It is disheartening that the nation seems to lack policy direction six decades after gaining independence from the British Colonialists. We need selfless leaders who will build this country and restore her to the path of greatness and ideal governance which was the dream of the nationalists who fought for independence” Ogundoyin said.

He stated that God has been very good to Nigeria as He has blessed her with abundant human and material resources, adding that Nigerians especially the leaders at all levels must however make good and judicious use of the nation’s wealth for the betterment of the citizenry.

The Oyo speaker stated that the period of the sixtieth Independence Anniversary must be used to pray for the country, review and assess the nation’s journey since independence with a view to righting the wrongs.

“It is our National Day and the journey has been on for the past 60years. October first was the day a free nation was born. The day we all agreed irrespective of ethno-religious differences to come together to build a strong nation. We still have a long way to go though. I believe no nation is perfect or has got it all. We need to put in our best and our best this time isn’t good at all. My advice is for us to continue to pray for our dear nation to get it right especially in terms of leadership. I congratulate Nigerians, Governor Seyi Makinde and the entire people of Oyo State on this very auspicious celebration. Let me say that our governor has proved to be a worthy leader who meant well for his people.” He added.

The speaker stressed the need for the nation’s leaders to tackle the twin problem of unemployment and poverty which he noted was largely responsible for the high level of insecurity in the country.

“The latest cases of insecurity particularly the recent upsurge in the unholy activities of BokoHaram which led to deadly attack on the convoy of the Borno State Governor where the death toll continues to rise calls for greater concern. Why are we waging war against ourselves having co-existed for six decades? Why do we still have kidnappings and ritual killings all around at this age when other developed nations are advancing in technology and making breakthrough in research activities. It is surely a disturbing and challenging situation and scenario.” Ogundoyin said further.

While emphasising on religious, ethnic and tribal tolerance, the speaker said for Nigeria to grow beyond the level it is presently, citizens must promote what unites them rather than what divides them at all times.
