Rings are considered part of adornment in societies and culture. However, rings are not just worn on fingers, they carry with them some symbolism.

Not many people know this though.

What are these symbolisms?

Ring finger – relationship status – this is where your wedding band goes. Middle finger – individuality – communicates order and purpose.

 Index finger – allegiance – leadership and ambition – mainly used for membership rings.

Thumb – strength of character – shows willpower and freedom of thought.

Rings, especially wedding rings, have become symbols of love and everlasting love because of the circle’s cyclical and eternal character. If you give each other wedding bands or exchange engagement rings, you are symbolically vowing that you will love and be devoted to one another for the rest of your lives together.

Couples intending to get engaged may wear promise rings on the left ring finger. In many cultures, the right ring finger symbolizes love and trust. In countries including Germany, Russia and India, wedding and engagement rings are worn on the right ring finger.

The spiritual meanings associated with rings encompass a wide spectrum, embracing concepts of eternity, unity, and devotion through their circular form. In some societies, rings can symbolise profound commitments to spiritual paths, serving as reminders of faith and beliefs.

Wearing a ring on the middle finger and not on the right finger is a clear way for a woman to communicate to the world that she is not engaged or married. Arguably the most noticeable of the fingers, rings worn on this finger are highly noticeable and can be said to symbolise power, balance and stability

The use of wedding ring is not commanded in the Bible, and there is no indication that it was ever practiced in the New Testament. The use of ring finger in the Bible was as a symbol of authority.

Single men usually wear rings on their left finger. This signifies independence and freedom from relationship commitments, as the fourth finger on the left hand is traditionally associated with marriage.

Can an unmarried girl wear a ring in a ring finger?

Of course she can. As long as she has the finger and a ring that fits it she can put it on

Which Finger to Wear a Ring and Its Meaning

– Left thumb: Actively looking for a partner.

– Left index finger: In a relationship.

– Left middle finger: Engaged or having a stable partner.

– Left little finger: Divorced or determined to be single.

– Right thumb actively looking for a partner.

Most single women prefer wearing a diamond ring on the right hand ring finger, but this is truly up to personal preference! The left hand ring finger is usually reserved for marriage, so some prefer to avoid this hand as it could dissuade other potential partners.

Also known as a pre-engagement ring, or a friendship ring, the promise ring is gifted to a romantic partner. It symbolises the wearer’s commitment to a monogamous relationship. It can be given to a loved one as a precursor to an official engagement ring.

In many Western cultures, the ring finger on the left hand is traditionally reserved for engagement and wedding rings. This tradition is believed to have originated from the ancient Romans, who believed that the vein in the ring finger (vena amoris) ran directly to the heart, symbolizing love and commitment.

Ultimately, there are no strict rules about which finger to wear a divorce ring on, and it’s entirely up to the individual to decide what feels most meaningful and comfortable for them

In a divorce, the ring recipient is entitled to keep it because it is considered a gift. With that being said, the recipient has the freedom to choose what to do with the ring.

Usually in divorce, a wedding ring is considered the property of the spouse to whom it was given. But if the wedding ring or the diamond in it is the ex-spouse’s family heirloom, there might be consideration to give it back, though there is under no legal obligation to do so
