Stakeholders on consumers’ rights in Ogun State have expressed optimism that a bill for a law to establish the State Consumer Protection Agency will go a long way in promoting the health and overall well-being of consumers in the state.

They stated this at a public hearing on a ‘bill for a law to establish the Ogun State Consumer Protection Agency, aimed at  providing protection for the interest of consumers, settlement of consumer disputes and for related matters’ held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The representatives of various organizations, like the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, the Community Education and Advancement of Peace Initiatives and the Federal Character Commission applauded the state lawmakers for initiating the bill and called on the executive and judiciary arms of government to ensure full implementation and enforcement of the bill when passed.

Declaring the forum opened, The Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, gave the assurance that when operational, the law would protect the people against marketing of goods and services which were hazardous to lives, and protect the well-being of the society.

Mr Elemide promised that the inputs gathered at the public hearing would further be considered and fine tuned by the House Committee on Industry, Trade and Investment to form part of the Bill.

Earlier, the Minority Leader of the Assembly and sponsor of the bill, Mr Lukman Adeleye, had explained that it was aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of the consumers, including the right to access complete information about inequality, quality, potency, purity, standard and prices of goods and services.
