Nigeria and China are in agreement that new and clean energies must be sufficiently financed, developed, and operationalised before attempts at modifying traditional energy supply and demand ecosystems can occur.

During a meeting in Beijing, China, between Nigerian and Chinese officials in the green energy sector, the two countries shared the perspective that the old should support the development of the new and the new must enhance, rather than cancel the old.

The two sides further exchanged views on how to deepen coordinated collaboration within multilateral fora in the areas of shared common perspectives and approaches for the various ways climate change was impacting emerging markets in the global south.

The Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, used the opportunity to articulate Nigeria’s position on the development of a circular economy amid her new push for value chain localisation across renewable energy technology manufacturing industries.

He stressed the need for Nigerian workers to benefit from the energy transition on a mass scale.

Chief Ngelale further emphasised that China’s new Africa Solar Belt Programme would be incomplete if she did not adopt supply chain diversification into developing markets, especially Nigeria.

According to him, this point was well received by the Chinese, which called for further discussion on the subject matter.

Both sides also agreed to advance technical cooperation in afforestation and counter-desertification efforts to empower vulnerable Nigerian populations in the Lake Chad Region and other parts of the country to find sustainable economic opportunities.
