The day of the African child is commemorated every 16th of June.

It is a commemoration of the Soweto uprising in 1976 when students protested against education injustice and inequality in the apartheid regime.

Corroborating the theme for this year’s Day of the African child, “education for all children in Africa,” “the time is now”, a child protection advocate and councellor, Mrs Oluwatoyin Daniel, who explained that every child need basic education  to be able to read and write, lamented that Nigeria is leading other countries with the highest number of out of school children in Africa 

While listing some of the factors responsible for children dropping out of school to include Poverty, economic inflation, Family problem and Ignorance, Mrs Daniel said collaborative effort was required by stakeholders in the education sector to ensure that every child has access to quality education.

To an educationist, Mr Abiola Aderinto, education remains the best legacy that can be given to children.

Mr Aderinto who explained that the education of children begins from home, called on parents and caregivers to ensure proper education and upbringing of children and wards to secure their future as well as to make the society better.

Some children who spoke with Radio on the day of the African child lauded their parents for their efforts  calling on government to enforce a law that will guarantee that every child has access to quality education.

As Nigeria joins other countries to commemorate the day of the African child, parents have been cautioned against  procreation of children they cannot cater for

June 16th of every year has been set aside to celebrate the day of the African Child in commemoration of the 1976 Soweto Students’ protest in South Africa.

Established in 1991 by the Organization of African Unity, Day of the African Child is aimed at raising awareness for the situation of children in Africa and on the need to continuously improve on their education.

The day also provides opportunity for highly spirited individuals to give to children and to address child marriage at local, regional and national levels.

Some children spoke on their level of awareness about the day of African Child which its theme for this year is “access to a child-friendly justice system in africa”.

Are there child-friendly Justice system in Nigeria, being a giant of Africa? A constitutional lawyer, Mr Afolabi Amure said the rights of children were clearly stated in the constitution.

Mr Amure who was a Permanent Secretary in the Ondo state education sector, spoke on how supportive the laws were and cautioned parents against the procreation of children they could not cater for.

Describing year 2020 day of the African child’s theme as timely, especially now that out of school children and child molestation had become rampant, the Chief Imam, Gbadamosi Central Mosque, Alhaji Jamiu Imoyomi and Pastor Stephen Adeyefa of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Ondo province said children deserved the best for a better society.

The clerics, however, cautioned children against every conduct that could ruin their future and drag the African continent backwards.
