The need for parents, government, and religious organizations in Nigeria to live up to empower the deaf so they could live a fulfilled life formed the focus of the 28th Annual Anniversary of the Association of Deaf Muslims in Nigeria held at Olomi in Ibadan.

The guest lecturer at the event, Dr Nojimdeen Agboluaje bemoaned the lackadaisical attitude of the government to the plight of deaf Muslims, saying the government should emulate developed countries where deaf and persons with special needs are given official responsibilities.

Speaking through an interpreter, the National Amir, Association of Deaf Muslims in Nigeria who is also a senior lecturer, at the Federal College of Education, Special Oyo, Alhaji Saka Dagbo, enumerated some of the challenges confronting deaf Muslims to include scarcity of Deaf Muslim Schools and Muslim teachers, neglect of deaf Muslims by Islamic organizations and exclusion deaf Muslims from empowerment programmes of government and philanthropic individuals.

In an interview, the representative of the Executive Assistant to Oyo State Governor on Disability Matters, Mrs. Sakirat Ogundeji, said the government of Oyo State is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the deaf in the state receives socioeconomic boosts in the aspiration to actualise their dreams.

Various speakers at the event encouraged parents to give formal education to their deaf children and allow them to practice their faith.

The event which featured the commissioning of a mosque for Deaf Muslims attracted participants from Ibarapa, Oke Ogun, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Ibadan zones of the association, and Deaf Muslims from Lagos State.

The newly established Federal College of Education, Iwo has the potential of opening up the economic fortune of the ancient community.

This was the submission of members of All Progressive Congress in Iwo at a press conference organised to show appreciation to Federal Government for sitting the college in the town.

Speaking, the leader of All Progressive Congress in Iwo Federal Constituency and Asiwaju of Iwoland  Chief Adedeji Gbadegasin, assured Federal Government that the people of the town who guide the property jealously as well as provision of security for prospective students.

Chief Gbadegeshin maintained that the institution would give room for capacity building and economic emancipation in the ancient community.

He lauded Federal Government for the gesture, saying the college would be treated as priority by the people of the town.

Also speaking, Special Adviser to Osun State Governor on Community and Rural Affairs, Mr Mumini Adekunle said the college was central to socio economic transformation of the community.

In a remark, the chairman of All Progressive Congress in Osun State, Mr Gboyega Famodun, who congratulated the people of the town for the opportunity said the institution would place the name of the town on the world map.

Mr Famodun urged the people of the town to support APC in the future elections.

It would be recalled that Federal Government recently established six federal colleges of education in the country.

Education

Federal College of Education, Abeokuta has inaugurated six capital projects constructed through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund TETFUND.

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu while inaugurating the projects as part of the Twenty Fourth Convocation ceremony in Abeokuta said education has continued to receive appreciable budgetary allocation from Federal Government to respond to the demand for improved funding for the sector.

The projects inaugurated include Primary Education Complex, College Gallery for immortalising eminent personalities and the College Conference Hall.

Other are the Water Treatment Plant for purification and treatment of portable water for the college, the Theater Arts Complex and the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo Vocational Education Building.

The Minister of Education, represented by the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education, Professor Bappa-Aliyu Muhammadu after the inauguration of the projects, stressed the importance of good maintenance culture to enable the projects serve the students and the staff.

The minister stated that Federal Government was committed to ensuring that institutions of learning attain and sustain academic excellence at all times.

Mallam Adamu called on the graduands to see themselves as young entrepreneurs capable of being self-employed and employers of labour as government caould no longer shoulder the responsibility of being the sole provider of employment.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by his  wife, Bola, on the occasion, called on the graduands and the staff of the Federal College of Education, Osiele Abeokuta to continue to be the leading light in the provision of quality manpower required to develop the education sector.

Provost of the college, Dr. Ayodeji Ajayi in his address stated that Federal Government had been supporting the infrastructure development of the college with funds from TETUND and promised that the institution management would continue to prudently manage the funds made available for the development of the college.

Eight thousand seven hundred and seventy seven students graduated from five schools at the Twenty Fourth Convocation of the college.
