The Ekiti State Government has procured four heavy duty equipment worth about one billion naira for erosion control and channelization of rivers across the state.

The equipment are Amphibious Excavators known as Swamp buggy and two Articulated Low bed Trucks

While inaugurating the equipment in Ado Ekiti, the Deputy Governor Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi said that the equipment were procured under the World Bank Assisted Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP.

Otunba Egbeyemi who explained that Fayemi’s administration was passionate to ensure hazard free environment, maintained that the gesture was born out of interest to motivate community participation towards reduction of environmental risks.

The Deputy Governor appreciated Federal Government for given Ekiti the privilege to enjoy from the scheme and pointed out that the facilities would help the state to carry out constant dredging and channelization of waterways.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Iyabo Fakunle- Okiemen noted that the intervention scheme for erosion control would bring about meaningful growth especially in towns and villages where people were terribly experiencing constant flooding.

The Contractor who supplied the Heavy Duty Equipment, Mr Collins Amadi said that the Excavators and trucks were brown new purchased vehicles which would stand a test of time due to it quality.

Stakeholders in environmental management in Delta State, say the World Bank has committed over twelve billion naira, aimed at addressing the menace of erosion in five sites across the state, in addition to seven hundred and fifty million naira counterpart funding from the state government.

They made this known when officials of the Delta State Ministry of Environment visited environmental protection agencies and the headquarters of Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP in Asaba, the state capital.

The Permanent Secretary, Delta State Ministry for Environment Dr. Minnie Oseji, said the tour was in accordance with the State Urban Renewal policy, aimed at strengthening environmental agencies for optimal performance.

The General Manager, Delta State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Victor Okolie, emphasized the role of a function laboratory at the facility, noting it would assist in scientific interpretation of the effect of industrial activities on the environment and the health implication for the citizenry.

An expert with Delta State NEWMAP Project, Engineer Felicia Avwenaghagha, explained that three, out of the five erosion sites are at seventy percent level of completion, stressing the World Bank and Delta State Government initiative would address the age long erosion menace in the affected areas.

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project NEWMAP, has reached an agreement with private partners worth three point two billion naira, for the commencement of erosion control measures at Obomkpa and Ukwunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The Secretary to Delta State Government Mr. Chiedu Ebie who witnessed the signing of the contract in Asaba, reiterated the commitment of the state government to initiate projects that would enhance the living condition of residents.  

Mr. Ebie noted Delta State Government had so far paid a counterpart funding of eight hundred thousand naira under the World Bank Assisted NEWMAP scheme to address the menace of erosion in several parts of the state.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Environment Mr. Chris Onogba described the signing of the rehabilitation of the Obomkpa and Ukwunzu erosion sites as vital to residents of the area, stressing the development was a proactive measure by the government to provide succour to the affected communities.

Similarly, the Project Coordinator Delta NEWMAP, Mr. Isaac Ufiofio, assured the gathering that the project would be executed according to best international practice.

Likewise, a representative of the contracting firm Mr. Prince Emmanuel, promised the stakeholders that the erosion control measure would be delivered according to contract specification.

Relief is on the way for the people of Owanta in Ika North East of Delta State following the signing of agreement between the Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP and a foreign firm who would undertake the commencement of gully erosion control measures in the area.

At the ceremony in Asaba, Secretary to Delta State Government, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, announced that the scheme was a two point four billion naira project, noting the state Government had fulfilled her counterpart funding of five hundred million naira to address the challenges of erosion and land degradation in the state.

The SSG, Mr. Ebie said the Midoma Iwerebor erosion site in Owanta, Boji Boji Owa, in Ika North East Local Government area was one of five sites earmarked for intervention by the state government in collaboration with the World Bank, stating the project had a time frame of 18months for completion.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Environment Mr. Chris Onogba who noted officials of the ministry had visited to witness the devastation caused by erosion in the area, charged relevant stakeholders to hasten efforts to ensure work on the site commenced in earnest.

The Coordinator of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, Mr. Isaac Ufiofio, observed studies have been carried out on the site to curtail the problem of land degradation, while giving the assurance that measures are place to cater for those who would be displaced in the course of the project.

Also a representative of the company handling the project, Mr. Emmanuel Adidi, in a remark, promised that the project will be executed according to best global standard.

The Delta State Government had keyed into the World Bank Assisted NEWMAP initiative in 2016, in a bid to find a solution to the challenges of erosion in parts of the state, with the ground breaking ceremony for the Owanta erosion site set for the 1st week of February.
