The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project NEWMAP, has reached an agreement with private partners worth three point two billion naira, for the commencement of erosion control measures at Obomkpa and Ukwunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The Secretary to Delta State Government Mr. Chiedu Ebie who witnessed the signing of the contract in Asaba, reiterated the commitment of the state government to initiate projects that would enhance the living condition of residents.  

Mr. Ebie noted Delta State Government had so far paid a counterpart funding of eight hundred thousand naira under the World Bank Assisted NEWMAP scheme to address the menace of erosion in several parts of the state.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Environment Mr. Chris Onogba described the signing of the rehabilitation of the Obomkpa and Ukwunzu erosion sites as vital to residents of the area, stressing the development was a proactive measure by the government to provide succour to the affected communities.

Similarly, the Project Coordinator Delta NEWMAP, Mr. Isaac Ufiofio, assured the gathering that the project would be executed according to best international practice.

Likewise, a representative of the contracting firm Mr. Prince Emmanuel, promised the stakeholders that the erosion control measure would be delivered according to contract specification.
