Onus lies on governments, religious leaders and other relevant stakeholders to address the issues of common discrimination, rejection and victimisation of widows in the society in order not to add to their pains.

An Islamic cleric and founder of Shafaudeen in Islam Worldwide, Professor gave the advice while speaking in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Ibadan, Oyo State, on this year’s World Widow’s Day

Professor Olagoke, who frowned at inhuman treatments being meted on some of the widows, noted that such treatments geared towards dehumanizing them could give the victim a painful and psychological trauma that might affect them throughout their lifetime.

He called on the Government at all levels  to be more committed to championing the cause of widows through Programmes and initiatives that would support their socio economic life, guarantee their financial independence and create educational opportunities for their children.

Professor Olagoke enjoined Widows not to allow the death of their husband to render them to be inactive or irrelevant, rather, they should venture into legitimate skills or enterprises that would make them self reliant in the society.

International Widow’s Day is being held on every 23rd of June.
