There is a need to declare a state of emergency in the security sector of the country. 

A lecturer from the University of Lagos, Dr. Abdul-Lateef Adeleke said this in Ibadan while delivering a lecture at the 12th Triennial congress of Ansar Ud Deen Society of Nigeria, Oyo State Council.  

Dr Adeleke said with the present state of affairs in the nation’s security sector, both federal and state governments must come up with policies that would reform the security apparatus of the country.

He noted that injustice and deprivation of legitimate rights of the citizens are a few of the factors contributing to insecurity in the country.

Earlier, the state chairman of Ansar UD Deen Society of Nigeria, Oyo State Council, Alhaji Hazeez Oladejo had said that the triennial congress would review activities of the society in the last three years. 

Highlights of the programme were the conferment of Gold Merit Awards on some distinguished Nigerians who had contributed immensely to the propagation of Islam and the Ansar Ud Deen Society of Nigeria.

Some of the awardees were the General Manager of Pensioners FM Ibadan, Dr Babatunde Tiamiyu, wife of Oyo State Deputy Governor, Alhaja Amudalat Olaniyan, some businessmen and women as well as the late former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Abiola Ajimobi who was conferred with a Posthumous Gold Merit Award.

Education

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde says for the country to solve some of its problems, governments at all levels, industries and academia will have to collaborate.

Governor Makinde, who stated this while receiving a delegation of the University of Lagos, Akoka, led by its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Toyin Ogundipe, in his office, Secretariat Agodi, Ibadan, called for an improvement in the relationship between the town and gown, adding that the two should maintain a mutually beneficial relationship.

Govérnor Makinde said Oyo State would explore the opportunity of having a Memorandum of Understanding with UNILAG on how to address some of the challenges facing the state.

While responding to the institution’s request for support towards the hosting of the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) events later in the year, the governor assured that the state would support the university, while he would also make his contribution as a private citizen.

Earlier, UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Toyin Ogundipe, had described Makinde as a worthy and distinguished alumnus, even as he expressed the readiness of the institution to partner with Oyo State on how to reduce unemployment and promote entrepreneurship.

Some of the other members of the delegation included the newly-appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, and the University’s Registrar, Mr. Oladejo Azeez.

Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has described the death of the Pro-Chancellor of the Technical University, Tech-U, Ibadan and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe as a great loss to the state, Nigeria and the academic world. 

Governor Makinde condoled with the immediate family of the late don, who was his lecturer at UNILAG, the UNILAG community and the Tech-U management.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa states that the late Ibidapo-Obe was a teacher’s teacher and an administrator per excellence, who made great marks on Nigeria’s education sector.

It adds that the former vice-chancellor’s death came at a time his wealth of experience and sterling knowledge of education management are needed by the state and the country.

Government at all level have been encouraged to start working toward sustained use of broadcast media for educational advancement of students in the country.

Two experts in educational broadcasting, Professor Sunday Oloruntola and Mr Adedokun Adeyemi gave the advice while speaking on the role of media in bridging education gaps created by the coronavirus pandemic.

In his opinion, a Professor of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Akoka, Sunday Oloruntola said broadcast education as well as e-learning have complementary role of bridging education gaps created by unforeseen circumstance such as the Covid-19 pandemic, saying the current experience should propel government to consider distance learning for all categories of students in the country through the use of broadcast media.

Speaking in the same vein, Mr Adedokun Adeyemi of the Mass Communication Department, at The Polytechnic, Ibadan however said factors such as erratic power supply, audience choice of channel as well as the economic condition of an average Nigerian might affect the success of the mode of education.

Mr Adedokun who commended some state governments for initiating the transmission of education on radio and television maintained that government must ensure stable power supply and rich broadcast concept to justify the education format during lockdown.
