The United Nations Children Education Fund, UNICEF in collaboration with the National Population Commission NPC will begin the electronic birth registration across Ondo State next month.
A UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Mrs Sharon Oladiji revealed this in Akure, the capital during an advocacy campaign to the state on birth registration.
The first port of call for the UNICEF representative, Mrs Sharon Oladiji and her entourage was the palace of the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo where she described birth certificate and National identification number, NIN as crucial towards effective national planning.
Mrs Oladiji hinted that children between the ages of zero and seventeen years would be captured at no cost to mop up the backlog of unregistered children across the state.
She solicited the cooperation of traditional rulers, the media, local government officials, parents among other stakeholders to ensure the success of the exercise noting that no unregistered child exists constitutionally.
Responding, Oba Aladetoyinbo who expressed optimism that the proposed data capturing would be helpful, donated an office for the exercise and advised UNICEF to incorporate local government for adequate capturing.
The UNICEF representative also took the birth registration campaign to Ondo city where he met with the Sasere, High Chief Johnson Adeduro and later moved to the center, where adhoc staff for the exercise were being trained, asking them to utilize the digital appliances given to them correctly.
The Federal commissioner representing Ondo State in the national population commission, Dr Diran Iyantan also encouraged parents to have their National Identification Number NIN in place to facilitate proper registration of their children.
On the entourage of the UNICEF representative were members of the NPC management team in Ondo state, led by the Director, Mr Yemi Falusi.
