Residents of communities along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Oyedele expressway in Ogun State have raised the alarm over incessant kidnapping cases around the area and called for urgent intervention of the relevant security agencies.
Chairman of Ilisan Development Council, Mr Wemmy Osude, who spoke with newsmen on the development, claimed that gunmen suspected to be kidnappers had recently abducted about 20 travellers along the expressway.
Mr Osude alleged that the gunmen ambushed the travellers and took them into the bush at a spot along the road stretch between Sagamu and Ilisan township, pointing out that the incident happened at about 8.30pm, yesterday (Sunday 31st June).
The Community leader claimed that one of the victims who escaped was shot in the knee and had been taken to hospital for medical attention while the matter had been reported to the police.
In a reaction, the state police command reiterated that security measures had been strengthened in Sagamu axis to forestall attacks, pointing out that one person was reportedly kidnapped by a group of unknown armed individuals, without definite number.
The Command maintained that the identity of the kidnapped man was yet unknown, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Alamutu had detailed the Anti-Kidnapping unit to take up the investigation.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola claimed in a statement that the gunmen had trailed the victim driving a grey colour, Toyota RAV4 Jeep, numbered – Lagos – AGL-16-JE, to a rough patch of the road, fired four rounds of ammunition believed to be from an AK-47 into the tyres and forced the driver into an unregistered Venza Jeep, before speeding towards Ijebu-Ode.
The Police Public Relations Officer said the hoodlums also shot at the driver of a black Toyota Camry car, with registration number – Lagos – AAA-04-JB, after they smashed the windscreen of another bus collected the driver’s mobile phone and warned him to be cautious as he was not their target.
