Ogun State government has presented appointment letters to 1,000 enrollees of Ogun Teachers Scheme, giving them permanent status on the payroll of the state teaching service commission.
The government also declared Monday 7th October, 2024 as work free day for the teachers as part of the gestures to honour the educators.
Governor Dapo Abiodun made the announcements in Abeokuta, at a ceremony to mark the 2024 World Teachers Day celebration with the theme “Valuing Teachers Voices: Towards New Social Contract for Education”.
He also announced an increase in the rural allowance for teachers as well as transportation allowance for all categories of teachers to cushion the current economic realities and cover for the days off being enjoyed by other civil servants in other sectors.
Governor Abiodun, who applauded the efforts of President Bola Tinubu towards improving the education sector through various interventions, especially with students loan scheme, equally restated his administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of teachers in view of their immense contributions to moulding and reshaping the society.
In a remark, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Ogun State Wing, Comrade Oladipupo Sewakanu said the theme for the 2024 world teachers day emphasized the need for government and other stakeholders to strengthen the necessary structures for education to thrive and ensure that the voices of teachers could be heard.
Describing the increase in rural allowance and transportation allowance as morale booster for teachers in the state Comrade Sewakanu appealed to the state government to fast track the implementation of the service extension for teachers in the state.
Also, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools ASUSS, Dr Felix Agbesanwa called for the abrogation of obnoxious contributory pension scheme, which, according to him, remained a threat to the little amount of humanity existing in the state’s dehumanized workforce.
High points of the Teachers Day celebration included the presentation of cash rewards to outstanding teachers in various categories.
