Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has charged institutions of higher learning to always encourage the study of history to promote unity, national integration and nation building.
Governor Fayemi gave the charge while delivering a lecture at an international conference organized by the Department of History University of Ibadan in memory of Emeritus Professor Jacob Ade Ajayi.
Dr Fayemi who noted that a nation without history had lost its values and identities, stressed the need for stakeholders to assist government, as history remained an instrument for human and national development..
He remarked that the recent re- introduction of history as a subject in school curricular by the Federal Government would enable the younger ones to retrace their steps and learn about the past events.
The Ekiti helmsman however expressed concern that young Nigerians have lost their sense of identity and patriotism due to absence of history in school curriculum.
Governor Fayemi, who spoke on the academic and administrative career of late Professor Ade Ajayi, said that the educationist who hailed from Ikole Ekiti would remain a living legend in the academic circles.
