Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State says there is need for sports writers to intensify their reportage of happenings in the sports sector to put an end to the cabals that have taken over the nation’s Sports sector.

Governor Wike said this while declaring open the Triennial Delegates Conference of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, ongoing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. 

Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, Governor Wike maintained that corruption had taken over the nation’s sports sector.

He described as unfortunate a situation where some sports writers were also members of the cabal, thereby frustrating the fight against corruption in the sector.

Governor Wike enjoined sports writers to shun sentiments and be more committed to the quest of showcasing potentials in sports. 

Also speaking, former President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Alhaji Waheed Odusile, stressed the need for SWAN to always reward its members, who were outstanding in their line of duty.

Earlier, President, International Sports Press Association, AIPS Africa, Mr. Mitchell Obi had called for more aggressive reportage of issues on doping, unhealthy rivalry, as part of moves to sanitise the Sports sector.

Present at the opening ceremony included football legend, Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka, Vice President, Zone C of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr. Petrus Obi, Vice President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, South East Zone, Chibota Edozie, three former Presidents of SWAN, and delegates from thirty state chapters and Abuja, who are expected to elect new national officers to run the administration of SWAN for the next three years.
