Reactions have continued to trail the death of the speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, EKHA, Mr Funminiyi Afuye.

In his reaction, a former Ekiti State governor and the Social Democratic Party, SDP, governorship candidate in the June 18 election in the state, Chief Segun Oni described the death of Mr Afuye as a rude shock, devastating and colossal loss to the Ekiti people.

Chief Oni in a statement by his media aide, Jackson Adebayo in Ado Ekiti said that the Afuyes belonged to the group of Omoluabi Ekiti, a very humble and astute politician who has served Ekiti meritoriously in various political positions and as EKHA Speaker, adding that he has left a good legacy.

The former governor, therefore, expressed his condolence to the deceased’s wife, children, family members, members of the state assembly, the government and all Ekiti people, praying to God to comfort them all.

Similarly, Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Mrs Monisade Afuye has commiserated with the state government, lkere Community and the entire people of the state on the death of the speaker.

In a statement from the Office of the Deputy Governor in Ado Ekiti, Mrs Afuye described the late speaker as a gentleman, patriotic citizen, vibrant leader and political genius whose initiatives and ingenuity have earned the state encomiums across the country. 

The deputy governor who described Mr Afuye’s death as shocking expressed sadness at losing a key stakeholder from her hometown who according to her still had a lot to contribute to the development of Ekiti State.

She prayed for the repose of his soul and also prayed to God to grant the government and the people of the state, especially his lkere community the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Meanwhile, following the death of the speaker on Wednesday evening, the State Government has postponed the swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Dr Habibat Adubiaro and the newly confirmed Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Dayo Apata, SAN.

The swearing-in ceremony which was initially scheduled for Thursday, October 20 will now hold at a new date to be announced later.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the governor, Mr Yinka Oyebode says, as a mark of honour for the departed soul, the Governor’s special thanksgiving service slated for Sunday, October 23rd, has also been postponed indefinitely.

Mr Funminiyi Afuye died on Wednesday night at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti at the age of 66 years, after suffering from cardiac arrest.
