As coronavirus and weather continue to affect the economic development of African nations including Nigeria, there is the need for grassroots farmers to brace up for massive agricultural production to guard against food shortage in the nearest future.

Chairman, farmers’ wing of the Oyo State Agricultural Development Programme, OYSADEP, Alhaji Saliu Immam gave the advice while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the effect of Covid-19 and delayed rainfall on the 2020 farming season in Oyo State.

While enumerating some factors currently affecting farming activities in Oyo State, Alhaji Imam explained that the coronavirus pandemic had affected government policies on agriculture, adding that the problem was further compounded by change in weather condition.

The OYSADEP chairman who lamented cost of labour and lack of fund for farmers’ smooth agricultural takeoff, however, implored farmers to aggregate themselves into unions and explore alternative sources of fund for their farming activities.

He also urged government at all levels to empower farmers so as to meet the national food demands in future.
