A former Director General, National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Mr Yomi Bolarinwa, has advocated standard guidelines and effective mechanism to checkmate unprofessionalism in the nation’s broadcasting space.

Mr Bolarinwa made the call in osogbo, Osun state at the Southwest edition of the maiden National Workshop of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, SNB with the theme “Broadcast Ethics and 2023 General Election in Nigeria; A Review.”

The former NBC Director General opined that once they were effective mechanism with strict enforcement in place, the standard of broadcasters would improve.

While examining media performance during the last general election, a Communication expert and senior lecturer, Mass communication department ,Kola Daisi University, Ibadan, Professor Jendele Hungbo, berated some broadcasters for engaging in unprofessional and unethical conducts in reportage, presentation and analysis.

Professor Hungbo called on broadcasters to always ensure they were guided by professional ethics and discipline, to avoid sanctions meted out on media outfits during election duties for misconduct and misinformation.

On his part, a veteran broadcaster, Dr. Yemi Farounbi said there was the need to re-introduce mentorship, training and retraining into the broadcast profession.

In a remark, SNB National Coordinator, who is also the Executive Secretary, Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, BON, Dr. Yemi Bamgbose said the workshop was put together to further instill professional conduct and ethics discipline among Nigerian Broadcasters.

Media executives at the workshop included General Manager, Radio Nigeria Paramount FM Abeokuta, Mr Akinyinka Akintola and General Manager, Pensioner’s, Fm Ibadan, Dr. Babatunde Tiamiyu.
