As Nigeria join the rest of the world to mark 2021 Literacy Day, professors of literacy, adult education and lifelong learning want government to implement increased budgetary allocation to education without delay.
They made this known in Ibadan while speaking on the need to promote literacy for national development.
In his opinion, a professor of literacy and open distance learning, university of Ibadan, Rashid Aderinoye explained that the current allocation to education was too low, adding that the 80 million Nigerians that were illiterate call for prompt and holistic approach.
Speaking in the same vein, a Professor of literacy, open distance and lifelong learning of the same institution, Kester Ojokheter advocated a comprehensive review of section 4 of the Nigeria’s policy on education and creation of inter- ministerial forum for the promotion of adult education in Nigeria.
The literacy professors, who bemoaned increasing level of illiteracy, said improved funding of education and provision of digital facilities in schools would enhance literacy in the country.
