Today is Valentine’s day.

It is a day set aside to express love to friends, families, colleague, neighbours and the less privileged in the society by sharing gifts with them.

Over the years, Nigerians have always celebrated Valentine’s Day with the expression of love through exchange of gifts such as greeting cards,  items of various sizes and shapes, messages of love and hope among others.

Other activities include visits to eateries, amusement parks and other recreational centres.

However, the prevailing economic situation in the country may alter the celebration this year as lamented by some residents of Akure, Ondo state.

Apart from the economic challenge, they are also taking into consideration the need to avoid large gatherings in view of the coronavirus omicron variant which was still wreaking havoc across the globe.

One of those who spoke with Radio Nigeria, A medical expert, Ajibola Adeyeye said he would rather be at work than commemorating valentine’s day which would at the end cost him some money.

” I think valentine is supposed to be every day and this valentine we are talking about is supposed to be Monday.I.will be in office”.

Also speaking, a young broadcaster, Miss Seye Akinwalere believed that valentine should be celebrated every day by showing love to everyone around especially the less privileged.

“Valentine’s day is celebrated just for people to exchange gifts with their lady friends or male friends. You should try to at least show love to other people you don’t even know”.

Different strokes for different folks, while some see nothing special in marking valentine’s day, Mr Abidemi Yusuf and Odeleye Ajibola concluded that they would celebrate the day with short messages and phone calls to their fiancees and not the usual visit to fun centres.

“It’s not a must I must take you out. If I can afford a gift, I will buy you a gift. You can’t compel me to go extra mile to buy you a gift.

“You have to check your pocket also. You have to consider some factors like the economy and the situation on ground but if you feel you can do more than you should, just limit yourself”.

Meanwhile, eateries, recreational centres and cinemas within Akure metropolis are now wearing a new look with a touch of red and white in preparation for this year’s Valentine’s day celebration.
