Nigerians have been urged to be careful with online financial institutions and other online transactions involving dubious persons.

The Zonal Coordinator, South West, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Alhaji Garba Shitu-Ahmad made the call while speaking on this year’s World Consumer Right Day in Oshogbo.

Alhaji Shitu-Ahmad speaking on the theme for the day, “Fair Digital Finance”, said the aim was to encourage people to create insights and campaigns which are consumer-centred as well as inclusive, data protected, safe & private, and sustainable.

He maintained that perpetrators of cybercrime have ripped many unsuspecting Nigerians off their hard-earned money through digital banking.

Alhaji Shitu-Ahmad explained that the commission had recently, in Lagos, uncover some online financial institutions that in malpractices that violate the ethics of lending.

Alhaji Shitu-Ahmad advised consumers not to hesitate to report cases where their rights have been denied by sellers, corporate organisations, or manufacturers.

World Consumer Rights Day is commemorated every year on March 15, to safeguard consumer rights and to ensure that customers are not subjected to market exploitation or social injustice that may jeopardize their rights.
