Fire has gutted a section of the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Akure, Ondo State Capital.

The fire incident which occurred at about half past eight, Thursday evening ruined the office that house the card readers meant for the conduct of the October 10, 2020 Governorship election in the state.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria on the incident, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Ambassador Rufus Akeju said the cause of the fire was unknown but it would definitely be investigated.

Ambassador Akeju who felt sad about the incident noted that officials of the Commission were on ground to ensure that the office was not looted.

He said the situation would not deter the conduct of the governorship election slated for next month.

Correspondent Olumide Abudu reports that the fire incident had caused huge damage to the container makeshift office for the electronic gadgets. 

It was also gathered that INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, who is in Ondo State in connection with preparations for the Ondo State Governorship election scheduled for October 10, 2020, rushed to the office on hearing the incident.

Okoye said an investigation into the cause of the fire will commence promptly after the fire has been contained.”
